My magazine journey started when I was really young, I fell in love with art and design, and made play magazines out of fashion catalogs my older sisters had. Fast forward to a year and a half ago, I took a digital media course and instantly got into graphic design and editing, it pushed me to finally start my own magazine, despite my young age, as I wanted to connect with other creatives, and express my love for where I come from, Africa, through art, design, and other things I love to do such as writing, and networking with other creatives. I'm still learning about the magazine business so these kind of videos really help, thank you!

Hello. Been doing online magazine for two years now and I want to scale up especially online presence and monetization - I am in Nairobi and would really love to hear how it has been for you - I could get a hand from you.
I’m glad I found your page. I have always dreamed of starting a magazine. So much so I used to collect them. Years have passed (20 +) and my heart has led me back to this desire. I’m an educator and since that’s my area of expertise, I’m currently working on an education based magazine. I never thought it was possible until I watched your video explaining how to start a digital mag. Thank you for the inspiration and the willingness to share. My biggest questions include the proper procedure for trademarking the mag’s name as well as building ad revenue.

In regards to launching your magazine unfortunately we cannot comment on legal advice around trademarking etc. however in regards to building ad revenue, from our experience that is a broken model. I launched Ensemble Magazine in the autumn 2020 - it was something that started as a passion project. Something I still do as a side hustle (it earns me no money) but I aim to grow this and reach more people. I do some times struggle to keep an unique lifestyle positioning, especially as there are so many lifestyle brands out there now!

'Choose a topic you are extremely passionate about, when it comes to producing a magazine you have to be passionate about the subject, else you will not succeed. I have tried one in the past and it was successful on a small scale but I wasn't consistent and money - was an issue. I feel everything you are saying and want to try again Nathan. So, I'm going to pretend you are saving to me, "Ev, just give it time - if you keep doing what you are doing - it's going to take off." :)

about how much original content do you think is needed to start a magazine? I have an idea that I don't know if I want to make into a Blog or book or magazine. At the rate of producing monthly content I discovered that I have enough material for the next 10-12 years. That is if the bulk of the magazine is on one specific topic. but I don't know if that's enough to carry a magazine? Magazines usually have multiple topics, articles, and categories.

Thank you Nathan, we started a digital magazine a few years back, we took a hiatus to grow the website and have since re-launched the magazine. Your words have helped encourage me to carry on. The area I struggle most with is ad sales. The magazine is free as we identified a gap in the market for a magazine that had the look and feel of a paid for read but was available for free, as horse owners often spend most surplus money on their horses. We wanted to give back.

Hey guys, thanks for the video. I wanted to start a digital magazine so the first thing I've actually done is start a blog (well, I've called it a Journal as it sounds more professional.) The blog website is launching today and I planned to somehow seg-way into the digital magazine after getting some readers and checking theres actually an audience (though I'm sure there is since other magazines exist in this niche). But I keep thinking "what am I doing?!" Should I just go straight to the digital magazine and forget the blog until later? I'm also in two minds about going for a digital magazine or going for a subscription-based blog service... Hope you can share your thoughts.

It’s a hard question to answer, if you want to build your audience and influence first which is required always to build a digital products business then we would suggest a magazine!

I started a magazine in 2019 called Next up sports. Been a struggle trying to design everything, get all the stories, pics, and get ads to fill the magazine. Trying to figure out ways to get help and build a team. In 3 and half years I’ve built the Facebook to 230,000 followers.

I have tried one in the past and it was successful on a small scale but I wasn't consistent and money - was an issue. I feel everything you are saying and want to try again Nathan. about how much original content do you think is needed to start a magazine? I have an idea that I don't know if I want to make into a Blog or book or magazine. At the rate of producing monthly content I discovered that I have enough material for the next 10-12 years. That is if the bulk of the magazine is on one specific topic. but I don't know if that's enough to carry a magazine? Magazines usually have multiple topics, articles, and categories.

Thank you Nathan, we started a digital magazine a few years back, we took a hiatus to grow the website and have since re-launched the magazine. Your words have helped encourage me to carry on. The area I struggle most with is ad sales. The magazine is free as we identified a gap in the market for a magazine that had the look and feel of a paid for read but was available for free, as horse owners often spend most surplus money on their horses. We wanted to give back.

I wanted to start a digital magazine so the first thing I've actually done is start a blog (well, I've called it a Journal as it sounds more professional.)
The blog website is launching today and I planned to somehow seg-way into the digital magazine after getting some readers and checking theres actually an audience (though I'm sure there is since other magazines exist in this niche).
But I keep thinking "what am I doing?!"
Should I just go straight to the digital magazine and forget the blog until later?
I'm also in two minds about going for a digital magazine or going for a subscription-based blog service...
