I was promoted to Sergeant in January 1977. I later re-enlisted in October 1977. I wish I could say that I knew Sgt. Major Massaro, but I did hear a lot of good things about the Sgt. Major in those days, including the origin of "oorah".

So sorry to hear about your Brother. I was TAD (Temporarily Assigned Duty) 1/9 while on Okinawa March 1975. 1st Bn 9th Marines help evacuated Saigon in April 1975, right before the NVA took over Saigon. Your Brother, I'm sure, he remembers when that happened. Your Brother was proud to be a Marine, it's a pride that stays with for Life. According to the Marine Corps Hymn, Marines are guarding Heaven from the evil devil & his dark angels. Your Brother was Semper Fidelis ("Always Faithful") to the Marine Corps. Sorry for rambling on..... Semper Fidelis from an old Marine Sergeant.

Marines and historians have determined the true origins of "Oorah" lie with recon Marines stationed in Korea in 1953. During this time, reconnaissance Marines in the 1st Amphibious Reconnaissance Co., found themselves traveling via submarine to where they were needed. The memorable call of "dive, dive!" would be called on the intercom and a klaxon alarm, which made a very distinct "Aarugha" sound, would announce the descent of the sub below water.
The recon Marines, who heard this sound often, started using it as a motivational tool during runs and physical training. Over time, the word "Aarugha" came to be too much of a mouthful, and eventually molded itself into the familiar "Oorah," according to Maj. Gary Marte, a retired Marine.
Confirmation for this version of the story rests with the official Marine Corps Training Reference Manual on the history of Marine recon, titled "Aarugha,"

In 1918 the Marines in Bellow Wood were shouting Hoorah! through a gas mask. It sounded a lot like dogs barking. They earned the name "Devil Dogs" from the German soldiers in that battle who were terrified by them. I know this because I am a United States Marine.

@Jar Head are you saying you was assigned to H&S H&S 3rd FSR, it may have been FSSG when you was there. I was a truck driver in Truck Co H&S Bn 3rd FSR, they asked if I wanted to work in the Company Office, when I first got there. I said, anything to get out of the sun in the motor pool.... just fans no A/C in the Co Hq. Later on they transferred me to H&S Bn Hq S-1 section, which means I was transferred into H&S Co H&S Bn 3rd FSR for 9 months. So that makes me a POG. No problem, I loved it. In my last 2 years, I was in H&S Co H&S Bn 2nd FSSG (Sep75-Oct77), not ONE day in the field. I loved it, fresh starched Utilities all most every day.

BTW thank you for your continued service in the Marine Corps. You was in the Corps during Desert Storm and The War on Terrorism. Did you serve in "The Sand" any?
