  • An alarming video has surfaced showing a dangerous, illegal pass made by a semi-truck on Highway 5, near Clearwater B.C.
“This is horrifying,” said Merlin Blackwell, Clearwater’s mayor. “This has got to stop. People have died and people will continue to die - it is completely appalling.”
The dash cam footage shows a recent close call on a highway that already has a notorious reputation. Christa Dao reports.
Global News has reached out to the company Manitoulin Transport and RCMP for comment.

Class 1 guy here, the solution is obvious, since we are governed by hours of service regulation(maximum drive time and maximum on duty time and minimum rest periods), all commercial drivers should be paid hourly.
Here's the two incentives we see:
Paid flat rate/by mileage/per load. This means to drivers, in order to maximize pay, get things done as fast as possible at all costs, especially if the pay is low or driver is not being paid to wait for (un)loading time. This results in risk taking behavior to increase reward(pay).
Paid per hour for all driving, on duty, (un)loading time. Drivers have an incentive to take their time, drive safely to avoid delays and drive the limit to maximize reward(pay).
I'm not at all saying that this guy was right to break laws and engage in potentially deadly driving behavior, what I am saying is, reverse the incentives and you will see this behavior fade away. Good on the other drivers for making a gap for the rogue truck to get back in line and prevent a fatality.
GOVERNMENT: Please mandate all trucking activities to be paid by the hour, period! Please and thanks!

yup...got my class 1 as well....we gotta stop paying drivers by the mile...its easy math, you go faster you make more money...no wonder drivers wont slow down in a snowstorm and make bad passes....also the industry that won't pay you if you "lose a load" You gotta pay theses driver in FULL even if theyre a few hours late to avoid this reckless behaviour. Drivers shouldn't face financial consequences for making the right decisions! I completely agree we gotta pay hourly, when Im paid by the hour, guess what? I drive at a safe rate and take the time to do my inspection carefully!

And the white car driver also need to slow down and give the way to protect each human life. This means not support to pass the double solid line trucker. Please drive safe everyone on the road😢

In my opinion commercial truck speeds West of cgy should be capped at 90km, with heavy fines for violations. There is no reason we need 80’000lb weapons hurtling down mountain roads in variable conditions (which is most of the year) at speeds over 100km. For what reason? No really, I’m ok to wait an extra hr for my Amazon package! - slow down!

The last couple years I'd say BC has become the province with the worst drivers.
Plus it doesn't help when they can't even maintain their highways in winter. I drove highway 5 from Kamloops to Alberta last winter. A sheet of ice from start to finish. Bet if you added up all the salt/sand on that 400km stretch of highway you'd have gotten about 1 tandem dump truck's worth.

Canadian truck drivers are some of the worst there is. I have travelled on Europe highway and the trucks are limited to 90 km, per hour. They will not pass each other very often, On double lane highways trucks must stay in the far right hand lane and follow the speed limited of 90 km. per hr. which is common on most highways there. They are allowed to pas only if the vehicle ii front
of them is travelling slower then the posted speed. Our truckers in Canada have al lot to learn,

Another major issue is trucks on winding hilly roads who slow to 80 or 90 and get a collection of cars behind them. Then when a passing lane comes up they will hit 120+ and people can't pass safely. Worse when on truck tries to pass another in the passing lane. Then no chance to pass. Trucks should be forced to maintain the speed they were at prior to the passing lane and stay in right lane. Passing lanes are not that long so they won't be held up much.
