  • In an exclusive interview with An Phoblacht/Republican News following the hugely successful launch of her book, 'Lethal Allies - British Collusion in Ireland' former journalist Anne Cadwallader outlines her reasons for writing the book and how what she discovered surprised even her, a seasoned journalist with over 30 years experience reporting on the conflict in Ireland.

I read this book on a recommendation and what I read was truly staggering. I have read lots of books about The Troubles, mostly by Martin Dillon, but what I read here, was not only unbelievable, but unforgivable. The level to which these acts of wanton murder were carried out by people who were employed to stop just this very thing, is mind blowing. if not Shameful.

Martin Dillon wrote his books from NYC,whilst he was a good journalist,he does make a few mistakes,in his books. He did open a few wounds towards the establishment, the Forkhill killings, was a piece on collusion and downright murder, were he could of went further. (The dirty War). Journalists like governments always hold back the most interesting tit-bits for future refererance,or future interviews.Anyone can be sued.

Yes, both available from the Sinn Féin Bookshop website, however I believe first run of Lethal Allies (which was released on Thursday) may already be sold out.

Many people are surprised that the Irish people were lured into a war in their own country and unless you had seen it it full flight/fight it is easy to not recognise it as a war as such. There was a massive military conflict happening on the flank of Britain between the British elite and their subjugated Irish neighbours. Anne's meticulously researched book lays out in stark detail the mendacity of the British in their treatment of the Irish and their indifference toward their own, working class cannon fodder sent to be dispatched by the IRA and not forgetting the I.N.L.A.

I just finished reading it. Man I hope it will lead the way for some accountability and comfort for the Victims families. I know everyone knew what was going on but it still shocking to read it as fact. peace!

not the first time in print ie: Sean McPhilimey and -The Committee: Political Assassination in The North - I have searched for years for updates on Sean and the story, the amazon cases with The Prentice brothers and Trimble etc On first reading of that book I did get the sense of subterfuge and misinformation, noted and considered in the 4th Edition. I note that McPhilimeys main concerns (Excluding Sands) considered around the source John Weir who is featured heavily in Sean Murrays Unquiet Graves. The main energy behind these books and films I think is now realised as the main core is exposing and putting the truth out there - not in regards of criminal prosecutions etc That is the ongoing injustice of it all but the greatest victory is the truth being out there and being taken seriously - I think that this battle is won and now accepted - that is of no comfort to the families effected who righlty want justice but its a big WIN in the context of the overarching denial

@Pat McCaliskey www.amazon.co.uk/Committee-Political-Assassination-Northern-Ireland/dp/B000RQU1JM - I got my copy from an indy distributor in Philadelphia for around £10 about 10 years ago. You could not get it in the UK on order from Amazon (Prentice Brothers case) at that time. Google search US based book distributors for a reasonable price

I tried reading a print copy but my bad eyesight and the fact that the version I ordered was apparently a copy of a galley, I switched to a Kindle version and couldn’t stop reading it. I understand it was used as an exhibit in cases involving relatives for justice and it is clear that they it is quite useful as evidence in a number of cases. It is not a novel, it is a clear legal document tracing the weapons, geography and perpetrators of an astonishing number of atrocities. My only wish is that the book would be put on a listening format, like Audible to save my poor eyes.

Loyal to empire? Loyal to state terror? No thanks. That is boot-licking. The only way to achieve happiness for all is to show the truth that empires do the most harm - that's how they keep control. The only way to achieve happiness for all is to end empire, give the stolen land and wealth back to Indigenous Irish people, and ensure self-determination and human rights for all people.

We are all aware that there were many law abiding loyalists who suffered horribly from the violence of the IRA, the Real IRA, INLA etc. The difference between Republican and Loyalist atrocities is that there was plenty of motivation to find and punish Republican perpetrators, the police and the state did not endeavor to hide the identities of the perpetrators nor was there any encouragement of the police or the state for Republicans to carry out their atrocities.
Neither side owns the suffering of the conflict. Horrors happened on both sides and neither side can claim innocence.

the three godfathers in her book are said to have lived charmed lives because of their lack of prison sentences.let me remind republicans none of these men have charmed their way into government. wee marty and the secret brit gerry now anne there is charmed lives.the ruc didnt hound the commanders of irish republicanism in mid ulster who overseed many more murders than annes boogeymen.they continued on into the 1980s and still no arrests.oh yea ah forgot they sent in the sas to clear up the vermin.

Well one "godfather", as you call them, Robin "The Jackal" Jackson did live a so-called "charmed" life. You would acknowlegde this if you actually read the book and others about this topic. This man was an informer for military intelligence and he committed numerous murders and was known to police. They even got his fingerprints on a homemade silencer. Somehow he was told of this, most likely by supportive RUC officers, and the case against him was weakened. He also had changed his appearance, another tip from the RUC because there was an eye-witness statement. If you're a known terrorist and working with military intelligence, and you go on killing people and basically get away with it, then you lived a charmed life. And this is just one person.
