This Cheoy Lee 43 was abandoned behind a dock with a few feet of rainwater inside when the current owner bought her for dirt cheap. Since then he's rebuilt the big diesel engine, stripped off the teak decks, and refinished some wood, but there's still about 99% of the project left. If you're willing to rebuild a boat from the hull up this project might be for you, but if not I'd run away.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.
Please leave a like and comment if you've enjoyed the video, and subscribe if you haven't already.
Word of advice, if the deck feels a bit soft its best not to jump up and down on it as this often leads to the formation of a new hatch and quite bad bruising.
Nick Tombs Lol, I was thinking that too, it’s obviously soft, there’s no need to push your luck jumping on it. Jump on the solid ones to show how solid they are, not on the rotten ones to show how rotten.
Love the Learning The Lines channel..Jordan and Randi please keep the "pre owned boats" videos coming! Interesting, even though not in the market.....
He refinished the stairs, cabinet doors, table and engine first. Those are the things I would do last. Maybe start with structural work and rough interior first.
Those are the things I would do first as well, because they give fast and handsome feedback. I would be wrong, you would be correct.
Would you drag a pig out of slop and put lipstick on it before washing it? 😜
There are "project boats" and then there are candidates as a target for naval gunnery practice.
My ship in Vietnam was decommissioned and used as target practice to sink for an artificial reef.
USS Buchanan DDG 14.
Yeah, this boat definitely needs shot and put out of its misery.
@@brentparks3669 yeah one good shell or tracer and she'll be set free
Lmao! Yup...$500 for scrap metal weight! Wish owners understood this concept! At some point a boat is monetarily bankrupt of value typically because it was allowed to cruise right into a complete state of rot and disrepair and owners still expect to get 80% of the $ they paid. So the boat doesn't sell and rots away to become waste. Actually many people do this with lots of things! Particularly in America!
Yeash. Throw some more Plastics into the Oceans, there is plenty of space.
Other than re-coring the deck, it is not that bad assuming it is structurally sound otherwise. Put in some nice insulation to make it more livable. If you went wit a work boat finish on the interior with a lot of painted surfaces, vinyl planking and laminates instead of all that varnished wood, it wouldn't take too long or cost too much and be a lot brighter. It also gives you a blank page for making the interior to suit your lifestyle.
@Donald Mackay Yeah, they would be doing the interior from scratch. I follow several builds that are doing the same. It is not unheard of.
I like to keep an open mind when I see these project boats, but it's way more than my imagination can comprehend, great vid ya'll.
Always be weary of an engine that has been recently painted and you see over spray of the paint on the lines.
Sure, 15K sounds like a fair price. Let them know if they pay me 15K I will haul it away for them. :-)
I find these episodes really interesting! Like you say... if someone wants to put 5 -10 years of their spare time , and has alot of cash they want to throw at it now (and probably for the rest of the boats life); if they have a free place to work on it, free helpers- free stuff etc ect etc. Well, if you could get the boat for almost free and move it to your free location for free... I think you might have chance at making a boat someone would want to sail! Of course, after all that, and sailing it for a few years, it will be a 50 year old boat and you might have to, lol, give it away for FREE to get rid of it!
It's basically an empty casco that comes with an (regrettably owner-rebuilt) engine, some tanks and a couple oufit pieces in bad glossy varnish left.
LOL
There's a reason ABYS requires qualifications and continuing courses to be NAMS or SAMS certified as a boat surveyor. I'm sure that MOST surveyors would have stepped on board, opened a couple of hatches and asked you 'so...what are they offering you to tow it out and scuttle it as a new reef foundation?' Seriously...pull the brite-work, yank that mast, buy a 1-inch bit for your drill, charge your 80 tanks, and make a 'diving-day' of it...because THIS WILL NEVER BE SEAWORTHY AGAIN!!!
LOL
Lake worthy?
@@richardedwardpay not even a safe pool toy.
Whew! That is certainly one of a project but what a steal for someone willing to put in the time and effort!
That boat looks like it has been sunken for a while. There is just too much damage showing for it to be caused from rain water leaking into the boat. Thanks for the video.
Really appreciate you both taking the time for the tours. My grandfather gave me the sea-bug. Trouble is that I am still deathly afraid of water.
These are great boats......this was a great boat....15k....that’s big considering the undertaking, that’s a full time working 3+ year project and 100k+ restoration.........
I look at these videos as stress relief and mental pause. Zero experience with boats. But this seems like the current owner realized the true extent of the damage after doing little work. Now is looking to cut his/her/it hope turned disappointment and turn it over to someone that won't be put off by complete gut and rebuild. Essentially there might be a good mould to build off of once everything is removed gently to a heap.
Good tour. The right boat for someone.
This boat looks like it was sunk once upon a time ..
Owner rebuilt the engine himself......that's a minus, especially after seeing the rest of his workmanship which seems to consist of painting or varnishing over problems.
instablaster.
looks like a rattle can rebuild
park it in the backyard for the inlaws when they visit.
That one could make a nice reef for the fishies.
LOL
@Mal L That will last longer than steel or aluminum in saltwater.
Although I would never take on a project like this, I see this as a possibility for a younger handy couple, if the hull is sound, mast and boom are solid, tanks are in good shape, etc. The interior is nothing more than a decent sawzall fix away, with a person being able to rebuild its interior however they want.
Deck replacement a la Sail Life. lol
Never did understand putting balsa on a boat. It's not like they didn't have closed cell 20-30 years ago.
@@samualwhittemore228 It was cheaper than foam. Mfg. didn't care if it rotted out in a few decades, they'll gladly make you a new one.
The teak decks probably floated away when this wreck sank.
Looks like its been raised from the bottom of the sea : )
Anyone that would be crazy enough to rebuild this better be prepared to keep it forever because it will never ever be worth a fraction of the cost. I jumped ahead to make a couple of positive comments. 1. Anyone that thinks that Randi is anything short of beautiful is BLIND! Jordan, you are a blessed man! Beauty, intelligence, wit and willing to get her hands in to the project...nice. 2. You two are doing a great job. I also follow Mads( sp ) Solianis the Wynns and others. You have the talent, personality, desire and ability to do this. I will say that you do need a bigger boat. Nice job on the electric power on Freebie...very nice. I would personally get a long shaft OB on a retractable mount for her stern... but I am a redundancy fanatic! Keep up the good work you two. Rick.
What a nightmare! It needs a total re-fit and what has already been done needs to be properly re-done! I couldn't even watch the walkthrough at the end.
LOL
Sometimes even a FREE BOAT is way too expensive....
Sometimes they're just too far gone .....walkaway!
LOL
Like they used to say about some cars, take the radiator cap off and drive a new one underneath it. LOL 😂
I love this channel. I'm a OK captain .but disabled now .I need a affordable cruiser . to make my home trying to live cheaply as possible. Iv always loved the water .. Ocean .not fresh.Lol beach bum.Lol
I think that having some of the boat, like the aft compartments, disassembled is a plus because you can see "the bones". That aft starboard area near the engine would make a good workshop. This one reminds me of the one in the salvage yard.
Not a bad point. The deck is a bit of work though.
2 questions, 1. how cheap is it and when are you buying it, thats a fantastic project if the price is right
Whoops! Asking price was just added to the video description. Thanks for the reminder.
I live in Titusville and when I saw the free boat you got, I almost threw up. Nice pick up
Titusville rocks.
Right....thought I was looking at a crime scene...run Forest, run!.....
Rebuilding a boat has to be substantially harder than building as new.
Nice layout and I bet a beautiful boat and its day. Can you imagine the former woodwork wow. But for now scrapping throw away
It definitely has potential. Put it on jacks and live aboard for a bit. What you save in rent put back into it.
Hi guys 😉👍,,I found it a little late, what a pity,,I'll ask anyway,,is this beautiful motor boat and sails still available??
The overall impression through the screen, everything is rotten
I've learned a lot watching your videos, thanks! I'm headed to Norfolk tomorrow to look at 4 candidates for my next project. Including a 44' RB Mauritias.
I enjoy these vids. But waiting for sailing. I see so many younh people say they are going to live and sail, retire young, live the life. None have been successfull. I feel like this is wishful thinking and somewhat unrealistic goal. I would love for yall to get back at it and succeed in your dreams. I am rooting for you guys. Hopefully yall get back on the water soon.
I think this boat has seen better days. It's time for her to go to Davy Jones locker.
Appreciate your very realistic summation of this project. Simply for education purposes, would you mind mentioning the asking price? Thanks for your content guys. It's amongst the most valuable on YT :)
15k
The only major component worth salvaging would be the engine and hearing that the owner rebuilt it himself does not inspire confidence in its worth unless you could somehow verify the guy knew what he was doing.
It will take a HUGE amount of time and money to rebuild it.
And also be aware of that black and white mold.
Thanks for the great video guys like the mixture of content from sailing and working on your boat ,to inspections on boats for sale ,which for me is the most interesting .This example of nautical vandalism isn't a project any sane person should consider undertaking ,sometimes things are to far gone ,and unless you're into sadomasochisitic behaviour ( not that there's anything wrong with that) it's time for a complete chemical contaminants shower ,and move on never looking back .Cheers from down under.
Soft Decks doesn't exactly mean that it's rotted. You had mentioned that he removed the teak therefore taking away all of the structural integrity of the deck I have built a lot of boats in my 52 years. There's a reason that teak wood was on that deck. The reason being structural structural structural and at the same time aesthetically pleasing to the eye. So instead of advising someone to rip the whole deck off you should strip it down to bare material and doing a moisture test on it then recap it with a strong stable material such as teak wood. Chances are the subdeck that you were actually walking on is nothing more than woven roving fiberglass. You mentioned,There wouldn't have been thousands of holes in that deck. First of all you don't nail teak down ,it is put down with an adhesive compound.
A young man who wanted a retirement boat... might finish in time.
I looked at one 30 yesrs ago. I loved it.a true motorsailor.
Today if this boat was located in thailand pay 5k and drop 50k into it and she would be back to her full glory. Thailand labour and teak are cheap as chips. This kind of rebuild is not hard for these thai wood workers. The hull on this boat is 3 inches of fiberglass.
Poor kids, their excitement is going to bankrupt them...
Neglect is a fine boats worst enemy. Thx guys
BUY this boat only:
IF you are an expert carpenter
IF you have a *complete* woodshop with all the right tools
IF you have a lot more time than money
IF you have land within 100 miles to store this boat on while working on it
IF you love sailing and/or can sell it after fix-up
IF the hull itself is sound
Then, no more then $5,000 tops.
If you are missing just one "IF" then run away.
Good video guys, thank you 🙏
This is the same thing as when you part out an old vehicle. You have to figure there are enough of them out there to sell the good parts for enough profit to scrap the rest. It is so sad to see.
I 62 and that's crazy to much work I am retired and there's not enough time for me
I know you two have been in touch with them in the past, so I thought I would see if you know what's up with Abandon Comfort? They seem to have disappeared.
I'm getting into sailboats but I think that I will need a trawler .
Any boats up there that you know of for sale ? Project boats and such
Best
Drew
Don't make the same mistake the owner did.....by buying this boat.
LOL
Fresh Water is the worst kind of water to have on wood, it's a well-known fact that wooden boats are excellent in seawater it's like the seawater basically pickles the wood but freshwater just rots the wood.
Thanks cool old boat.
If you like wood working...that boat will keep you busy for a long time. It was a beauty brand new. $200,000 you'll make it like new again
This is another example of a boat that will require way more investment to get it to marketable condition than it would ever be worth. These are what I call "negative value" boats. Stay away from these, regardless of how much DIY you feel you can apply.
LOL
LOL
Cheoy Leak for sure.
I have never seen a choi Lee without a soft deck unless it it had teak. To stiffen it
Just think of it as a blank canvas!😆
Was it sunk?
Several times I think
It's a wreck. That said, the drive train, masts and steering are worth the price if you are building a boat? What is the hull made of?👍
Solid fiberglass. Its a Taiwanese Cheoy Lee. Yeah, the basic hull will last forever. However, there are plenty of perfectly serviceable similar boats on the market that you can buy and go sailing today for a fraction of the cost of rebuilding that one.
I don't think that's salvageable. So much core that's rotted you'll dig into repairs only to find it needs more and more things fixed or replaced. Too bad to as it was a beautiful boat.
Please, when you post, put the posting number in front of the description. I want to read your posting in order. Thanks.
Seems to be once was nice boat but now it needs love and since you guys are young and be able to complete before long BUT if you guys have no acknowledge to do boat restoration well there is lot of hidden cost of repair and replace never cheap. I suggest for you to keep as simple as possible. Good Luck.
Homeless sailors on the Sacramento River would love to squat in this dead vessel until it sank and became a hazard to Navigation. Sad
Or like that piece of shit that sank by Tower Park a few years ago....
@Chris
I knew the guy that had that boat. He was handyman/boat fixer. Unfortunately he was away when the boat started taking on water. It sank taking his dog. It’s unfortunate that the Army Corps of Engineers doesn’t seem to handle marine navigation problems like that anymore. There’s an old houseboat now between King island and Paradise now. Derelict boats or turning up everywhere now because it cost so much to dispose of them, people just leave them.
It could be worse. What are people's thoughts on offering 2-3 thousand for the boat, and tareing everything up including the roof, and then refinishing it cheaply for 5-10 thousand. Assuming that bulkhead isn't a huge deal and everything mechanically works that is. It wouldn't be pretty, but it might just be functional. I actually think. It's a good thing that its mostly gutted
Quite common to see a broken man replacing or refurbishing something irrelevant when there are major works required first.
You should include pricing and buyer info in your videos
Run Forrest Run !
That boat is a train wreck
Love the layout. pity it is so beat
I like the style of these boats but this one is frightening and a damn shame it has been reduced to this condition...i would not take it as a gift and save myself thousands and my sanity. :-)
Agreed love the design/layout of these, but wouldn't want that particular one, and im dumb enough to consider a lot project boats. It seems there's more rot on that boat than there is boat.
What’s the price ?? It’s not in the description just the owners contact info
Try 15000
Project boat plus. What type of $ if you do your own labor.
Run run run the other way.
That Should have been a N1CE Boat, but it’s now Scrap...!!
How much would he have to pay to Scrap it..?? I would (IF I was the owner)
Take the Engine out, Sell That and give the boat away to the first person to remove it.!!
The engine needs to be RUN..!! If it sits in there until the boat is rebuilt it would be scrap
By then, it Doesn’t mater if it only has 3-5 hrs on it if it hasn’t been run in a year or two it won’t be Any Good 😩😔😢
Parts boat and a new coral reef. Id wear a mask and a life jacket going in there.
Springy cuz bulkhead aren't there.
Start running guys, dont look back.
I like lay out of the boat. Where can I find it?
Fifteen k with that deck? And with one of those "owner-rebuilt" engines? No matter how many teak doors he already repainted, that's a VERY steep asking price. And another minus: The heavily gutting might have cost You some of the worthy Cheoy Lee small brass fixtures, not to mention the original measurements and outfits making Cheoy Lees so unique ... so, better waiting some more months until the next slip bill or marina bill becomes due ... it can only get a lot cheaper, predictably by the month.
I find it hilarious that I thought the same thing....only an idiot would finish a door , with nothing to hang it on.
@@nicholasr7987 No, as a boatbuilder I had a lot of desperate customers caught in their romantic ideas of "get a fixer upper and remodel what You don't like in the first place as You gotta do some anyway!"
These often are very ambitious bureau people with not the slightest plan when it comes to structural integrity, load bearing or even the overall load system a sailboat basicly is, and those types do start with repaint on doors before destroying the rest.
That's why an owner overhaul of an engine is such a big nonono, too.
The Floating Dead.
I wouldn’t jump up and down on a soft deck unless your about to fix it. This boat is a $1 boat. Or sell it for parts. Nice design though.
👣Randy is simply adorable
Structurally, the boat seems to be sound, with the exception of the fore deck.
Cosmetically, it's a mess
Nothing some gas and a match couldn't fix right up.
I liked the boat , needs a little work, paint 🎨
Better its all ripped out, can actually see what needs to be done. "Interesting" boat design ;)
That engine was most likely painted over and not rebuilt
Unfortunately since I have rebuilt a couple of boats. I have to say that this boat is only worth about ten thousand dollars. With all of the work that has to be done and some that must be redone. I'm sorry but it's just not worth fifteen thousand dollars.
I like that design, but this particular one is well overpriced for the amount of work that is required. But it does have potential.
Please tell us how much
There are project boats in every boatyard in the world...go look! Many are in various stages of repair...many have been abandoned...This is no lie! Many can be had just by asking...Old boats are usually not worth fixing...Walk away...
How much the owner will pay you?
These two as yet have not indicated that they really intend to buy even a toy boat, usually called tyre kickers..
The idea that they will find something for nothing reaĺly does not seem to cross their minds??
