    I don't think the Ice Harvesters needed to look for Kristoff, because he's still an Ice Harvester himself in the first movie, so I assume that even though the trolls adopted him, he still went back to harvest ice, so they never noticed he went missing. And if he told them about being adopted by the trolls, they probably just thought he was fantasising and laughed it off.

  • @LadyKhione
    @LadyKhione Год назад +301

    Not a bad theory but I think we could take it a step further, as others have pointed out - Kristoff's parents would have had to be around the same age as Anna and Elsa's parents, so 15 at best. Which means instead of 2 adults being left separated from their home and culture we now have kids. Kids who were probably old enough to be given chores like 'round up the Reindeer that got separated or lost' or who just went out to explore and play and play hookie during the big celebration and then suddenly found themselves cut off from their parents, grandparents, culture...and the only thing left to them are the reindeer that either they took with them (to ride) or the reindeer they went to look for. Against the odds and more than likely quite a bit of discrimination given the mood at the time Kristoffs parents managed to eke out a living, raise a small herd or perhaps, join an ice business to make ends meet.
    Additionally, given the animation decision to give Kristoff blond hair and a fairer complexion than the North Uldra people it would be reasonable to assume that Kristoff, like Anna and Elsa, is only half North Uldra. I would bet that Kristoffs North Uldra parent (most likely his mother) married one of the ice men (since it looks like all the workers were men). Kristoff's own clothes gives this further credit because his clothes as a kid would have been made by his mother, and the design nods to both the icemen outfits and the North Uldra look as J pointed out. (Edit: this would also align nicely with the point @Ida Marie Myklebust mentioned in their post about the Norwegian governments attempts to assimilate the Sami people).
    As for what tragic accident befel his parents, I have a guess as well. I would bet that like all our favorite disney princesses of yore that Kristoff's mom died before Kristoff was able to form any strong memories, so say before he was 2. His father, gives him a reindeer companion to honor his mothers heritage and culture but can't provide much more than that (perhaps the calf of his mothers own reindeer?). Even with the death of his wife Kristoff's father knows he needs to continue to work to keep food on the table and care for Kristoff, and without someone at home to care for the boy, Kristoff's father brings him along to work every day. This is the routine that Kristoff grows up with until a tragic day when during work, there is an accident. normally little Kristoff is left at the sled to play with Sven and stay warm while the adults work and at the end of the day the adults pack up all the ice and Kristoff rides with them. This day is different, something slipped, something fell, and Kristoffs father is dead. the other workers knew him as a crew mate and none of them can take in another mouth to feed, but they still have compassion. The boy is too young to understand but they make him a little sled, give him their smallest ice pick, and they give him a lantern and tell him he's part of the crew now. Each of the families do a little bit here and there to help the boy, mend his clothes, buy his ice etc and they begin to raise Kristoff as a village. Kristoff is sad but that fades, and he knows these men so he's not scared and soon he falls into a new routine. Too few memories to mourn, and with Sven at his side and a new task and new friends to keep his mind busy its easy to picture the curious and happy kid we meet at the beginning of Frozen.
    To this end, I dont think the troll's actually needed to erase Kristoffs memory, I think he was mostly on his own as far as his memory could recall, because he wasn't able to form strong or consistant memories apart from working with the ice. They definitly still could have, but its more likely that they erased the memories of the icemen themselves to keep people from asking too many questions about the boy that no longer came home to the town but always came to work.

      And if you are right about Kristoff's father being an ice harvester, I'm quite sure his relationship with a North Ultra woman would be very taboo - seen as Norwegians (in that time) would look down on Sami people and discriminate them.
      Kristoff's looks might have been the reason why he got to stay with the harvesters, and his mom didn't. She might not have been dead, just abandoned as his father probably were very ashamed... Kinda the same way Elsa and Anna's mother were forced to leave her heritage and culture behind (and she could, since she didn't "look North Uldra"). I totally believe that at some point his father died, though - so essentially I agree with you!

    I love this! I'm Norwegian, and live in the northern part of the country - and this whole Sami plot in Frozen is very accurate! The Norwegian government decided somewhere around 1850 to start assimilate Sami people, and turn them into "real" Norwegians. In my native language this is referred to as "fornorskningspolitikk" and the government has later officially regretted the entire process. Frozen II resembles these politics clearly, and the whole dam situation is also directly inspired (or at least so I seams) by a very real revolt in a city called Alta.
    I'm so sorry to ramble. I just find it very fascinating.

    In Norway you got a thing from old lore called 'bergtatt' roughly translates to rocktaken or mountain taken. Basically trolls come out at night and kidnap people, usually kids but sometimes young men. I just assumed why kristoff was with the trolls were a nicer version of that. See, trolls are a weird thing thats sometimes nice and helpful, and sometimes the villain in the stories. Not the first time Disney have Milden up stories for the screen after all.

    What if the reason why Kristoff's parents left him was because they went with Anna and Elsa's parents. Kristoff's parents possibly joined and then left him with the ice collectors. Being outsiders, the family wouldn't be thought of much and likely were treated more like just a couple of extra hands. So, when Kristoff's parents don't come back and Kristoff went missing in a subzero area, they likely wouldn't put much effort into finding him.

      Yes, even if his parents were part of the tribe they still would have been like 10-12 years old when the battle happened just like the king and queen. And in order for him to be outside the enchanted forest, he had to have been born outside the forest since we know nobody could leave, meaning his parents still died from some reason unrelated to the mist or the battle.

    I believe his parents were iced harvesters and they fell into the water leaving kristoff and Sven by themselves, which is the start of the movie where kristoff ends up with the trolls and tells them what happened so that erases memory to only see men who harvest ice rather than his parents and their demise

  • @mrtthepianoman
    @mrtthepianoman Год назад +5

    My only criticism of this theory is that Kristoff does not look Northuldra (hair color and skin tone). I would modify the theory in this way. Kristoff’s mother got trapped out of the mist and had a child with one of the ice harvesters. Then maybe the ice harvester fell through the ice or something, I don’t know. But that would explain how he ended up being around the ice harvesters, and his story would mirror Anna and Elsa’s that much more closely

  • @megsesvids
    @megsesvids Год назад +4

    Alright! Here’s my theory. I agree that Kristoff’s parents were Northuldra. Although my thought is that at least one of his parents were a part of the community that harvested ice. Hence why he has that Swedish blonde hair rather than the dark hair of the Northuldra people.
    So, when the mist fell, the group of Northuldra who were herding the reindeer in the summer fields beyond the forest border would be separated from those inside the forest. In that aspect I agree. The thing is that clearly most of the reindeer were still within the forest. That would be why there are still reindeer when Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff show up in Frozen 2. However there are no reindeer in Frozen at all besides Sven. Which brings me to the theory of who Kristoff’s parents are and how they died.
    Let’s say that a few people were caught outside the mist because some reindeer had wandered off and they sent a party to go and look for them. One of those could have been a kid and had to learn how to survive in a world without magic. This person would have to take care of the reindeer in a territory that was unfamiliar to them. Falling into frozen lakes were very possible. They also would have used reindeer for clothing and food. The number they would have been herding would dwindle significantly.
    Cue the Ice Harvesting community. With dwindling resources the Northuldra who managed to survive the unfamiliar territory likely sold some reindeer so that they could pull their sleds of ice. This would be how parent 1 would meet parent 2. In the few years that these two people met and made a family with Kristoff it could be possible that Sven was the last reindeer born out of that herd as well. With Kristoff of Sven at home with his parents working a reindeer driven sled and ice harvesting it is likely that those reindeer and his parents both died. Kristoff wouldn’t be present though. He wouldn’t know how they died just that he and Sven were the only thing he remembers clearly.
    I also believe that the Ice Harvesters were Saami and the Northuldra were more of a nomadic community like the Native Americans who moved based on the seasons. The Saami settled in frigid conditions and thrived. The Northuldra aren’t staying in one place for very long. So Kristoff and Sven are basically Anna and Elsa as a bridge between two peoples. Which coincidentally is why he could also go through the barrier like Anna and Elsa did. The conflict however was with Arendelle and not the Saami people that Kristoff is likely associated with. Then again who would know better about isolation and community than a boy who came from two cultures that he lost and then was adopted by magical trolls. Kristoff is literally their spirit guide.

    In the novel, it says that Idunna and Agnar went to Troll Valley where they saw the trolls talking to a blonde woman who was heavily pregnant and was described as being an ice harvester. The book said the woman was visiting the trolls to grieve the tragic loss of her husband and the father of her unborn child. I think that woman was Kristoff's mother. One of the Trolls used their power to erase the woman's memory which would explain why Kristof never learned about where he actually came from. After the mist sealed the land they had to find other means of surviving which was becoming ice harvesters. Kristof's father possibly died doing this job, and his mother as well which would explain why the ice harvesters had no issue with him being underfoot but did nothing to take care of him. They were used to him being there but his parents were still outsiders from a strange land.

I understand the Sami in real life are made up of various phenotypes, of course, but if Kristoff is only a generation away from the natives of the Enchanted Forest than maybe one of his parents was Arendellian or at least non-Sami. Despite this, early experiences have a big impact. If Kristoff's parents were tragically killed when he was so young, he would presumably have serious abandonment trauma. Maybe the trolls edited his early memories so that he believes they raised him since he was born and hence he has greater attachment security? His relationship with Anna seems really healthy in Frozen II which suggests to me that the trolls did the right thing.

    The trolls are the secret villains of this series.... They were evil in the original story and this perception changes everything about who I see the Disney version now. The trolls advice to Anna and Elsa's parents in the first movie is the catalyst for the entire story and it was all bad advice in hindsight . 🙄

    • @amyhoover9
      @amyhoover9 Год назад +1

      Honestly, I wouldn't say that this makes the trolls evil... Anna and Elsa's parents sought them out first because they were concerned about Elsa and her powers. The trolls, if anything, come with good intentions, but perhaps they didn't think about the consequences being more nuanced than expected.
      I know that Grandpappy especially was mostly concerned about how Elsa's powers would affect the rest of the kingdom. He only saw the dangers, but of course, there's a lot more to Elsa's powers than just the potential harm that it can cause. If we look at both movies back to back and take in the good with the bad, it would be better off to say that the trolls made an error in their judgment. Mistakes happen; that's all there is to it.

    Just took the survey! I LOVE this theory, it was my first thought when I saw Frozen 2 that Kristoff was North Uldra! I saw a long detailed comment about how he’s more likely half North Uldra like Anna and Elsa and that makes a lot of sense. Excited to see what 2023 brings with this channel and can’t wait for the next fandom trivia stream whenever it is!!! Much love to you guys!!

    Nice video. Not that it changes the main theme of the theory, but you might want to read up a bit on Scandinavian folk lore concerning trolls. Some things that were believed were so common that a lot of people still today has at least heard of it. Trolls are said to sometimes kidnap human babies or kids and raise them as their own, and sometimes leave a "changeling", either a troll-kid, or a doll bewitched to look like the kidnapped kid, so the parents won't notice until it's too late. In some parts troll are described as looking a lot like humans, so much so that they can pretty easily disguise themselves as humans, and so the changeling kids might be raised as a human without no-one noticing, though the troll blood usually leaves traces, like the kid being unusually strong or perceptive, or in areas where troll are shunned a bit more, the kids could have lopsided features or grow up to be slow in the head (probably a historical way to explain people who today would be diagnosed with some mental condition).

Hope they don't try to go to the well too much because the theatrical releases lately have not yielded numbers anywhere close to the Frozen movies (COVID of course being a big factor).

    Thanks for a great video again! If you are looking for books to read for your children, I recommend you check out some Scandinavian / Nordic writers, especially since you both seem to have a thing for our culture! 😊 Astrid Lindgren, Selma Lagerlöf, Elsa Beskow, Tove Jansson, Kirsi Kunnas, H.C. Anderssen… All great storytellers. I myself grew up with their stories, and could not recommend them more! Especially Tove Jansson and her magical world of Moomins… You guys would love it! It has all the themes you embrace! And Astrid Lindgren’s strong girl heroes, they were my role models growing up! There are some movie / series adaptations from the works of most of these authors, so there could be some material for videos too! But mostly just wanted to recommend you and your children some excellent literature ❤️

    something I've been trying to figure out is how elsa and anna's mom got their father out before the mist formed. I know it had to do with her call but that's the base of my knowledge on the bit

  • @Mizumii25
    @Mizumii25 Год назад +3

    There is also another possibility that goes along with this theory, just kinda branches off. As mentioned: the trolls took him in, no parents in sight, etc. What's also very possible is that his parents got caught in the mist while their son, Kristoff, was outside of the area playing and he got trapped outside while they were trapped inside. Which is where he got lost in the woods, found the ice harvesters and that lead him to the trolls through the story plot. So the parents would have been trapped inside the mist, I'm sure the grief was hard and it's clear time passed inside the mist, so it's very possible that they passed away during that time and no one has made a connection between Kristoff and his deceased parents. Being a tribe that lived in the forests, I'm sure it's natural for something like that to happen sadly. Kids go out playing and get separated and lost and the parents never find them. With the mist blocking them in, they couldn't search outside of the mist to try to find him.

    • @awung11
      @awung11 Год назад +1

      Unless Kristoff is the age of Anna and Elsa's parents, this doesn't work, since that's when the mist occurred. Now, Kristoff's parents would be around the correct age.
