Even back in 80, Steve was one of those elite few Letterman guests who always had a new and odd bit on every appearance. This was wonderful!

Steve Martin is probably the first comedian I ever liked, my Uncle used to play his skits for me when I was about 3. I thought King Tut was the funniest thing & grew up loving his banjo music, still enjoying it now

Same here, he was the first comedian I was really aware of genuinely liking, even though as a kid I couldn't really figure out why I liked him. But I still do. Incidentally this clip was apparently broadcast a few weeks before I was born.
I guess it was The Three Amigos that first brought him to my attention. It must have been one of the first films I ever saw that wasn't specifically for small children.

This was Dave's "morning show" that was canceled because people who stayed home around 1980 watched game shows and soap operas instead of this kind of humor. When the show was canceled, Dave was convinced that his career was "over." Then Johnny Carson gave him the "Late Night" show. Thank you, Johnny, for the next 30+ years.

A fantastic reminder of how scripted and safe talk shows have become. This was aired at 10AM and felt dangerous, like it could go off the rails at any minute. Martin with a surprising undercurrent of anger/meanness "That's on there. I'm supposed to answer that." It wouldn't have surprised me if he had suddenly slapped Letterman in the face. I've officially become that guy who thinks everything was better when he was a kid :(

He couldn't resist the enormous money in those movie offers. Imagine how many standup shows he'd have to do on tour to earn what he made in just one movie. Plus writing new material is painstaking, but being naturally funny well, comes natural to Steve. A true legend.

Also, the morning show had been cancelled by then, and, as Merrill Markoe posted about it elsewhere, it was the rare show that could address it and have fun with it for its remaining month. There was little to lose after the cancellation was announced, and the show in its last month became far more daring, more irreverent than it felt it could get away with before.
