@@robertvarisco2196 I actually find Jay funny literally anywhere that isn't the Tonight Show, upon which, I thought he sucked. And that was before all the stealing the show a second time BS. Saw him live in the 80s and it was great. He was a good guest on Dave's show, too.
Funny sketch. Always good to see Dave with Johnny. But I wish I knew what a fax machine was. It seemed like some sort of paper email system. Why didn’t they just use email??
Faxing was still a very common way to send a document in 1990. Email was around at the time, but it was a lot slower in 1990 and not nearly as widely used.
I imagine walking around planting magical super-seeds and carrying a flamethrower, growing a forest all around me and then whipping out the flamethrower to cut it all down, vaporized in a plasma cloud straight down to the roots and I never stop walking and planting and burning everything. I'd be out there talking to myself and talking to God, debating omniscience and photographing all the evidence of things, the trees and the empty fields, the pacing footsteps and the arcs of fire.
That was a passing of the torch. From Johnny to Dave. This was back when late night was funny, way before it turned radically politically left. Seth Meyers .
@@LJ-xr5th that's ok, I'm just saying that Seth started attacking Trump and Republicans on every episode, when the show was supposed to be comedy, and light hearted interviews, ( like Letterman).
“No matter what, it left here funny.”
Christ, that’s a good line
That's stuck with me ever since the first time I saw this clip!
Love Louis Armstrong btw.
Classic line.
Best line of the exchange.
It smells funny.
"No matter what happens back there, it left here funny."
Damn.
Best line of the exchange.
At 1:50 Johnny references Dave testifying in court against the woman who kept breaking into his house.
Funny stuff, from both of the masters. It just reminds me how much I miss both of them on TV .
Which is why channels like this one are so important.
"Sajak yard sale" has stayed with me since this first aired
SO good.
All that setup, and the joke was actually pretty funny. Classic!
“That’s your community service.”
Ha! You are correct, sir!
HEYYYYYOOOOOH!
Love Paul's arrangement of Hello Goodbye. Highlights how good The Beatles melodies are, too.
Johnny was a real class act and truly liked Dave. If it had been up to him Dave would have gotten the Tonight Show instead of what's his name
And we all would have been so much better off!!
Who did get the tonight show after Johnny Carson? Oh I remember it was Conan but somebody stole it from him.
@@imtheman4805 You know, the pompous unfunny dude with the jaw and the cars.

You mean 'Ol Chin Face?
Johnny was THE king of late night! Man I miss that guy...
The King, and Kingmaker!
That's some bittersweet sh*t. I miss johnny. Long live dave!
Long live the King!
Absolutely THE definition of nostalgia.
Two greats together. That was awesome.
Wow! Just… wow! Nostalgia… Beautiful!
Can we just have a David Letterman channel? 24/7 old episodes?
This is as close as we get. But the new content on here is worth it.
I love full episodes of late night here
I think Pluto TV has that now.
You are on it.
You're literally on it bro.
I was Johnny's camera man that day and every other day. He wasn't joking.
Dialing music. I forgot all about the dialing music. Good times. 🙂
Ha! Fax machines lol…
This is such a perfect little time capsule clip, love it. ☎️ 📠
Absolute legends, plus a Zsa Zsa joke. What's not to love?
Love this.
Two people who should have been a long time host of the Tonight Show
David letterman and Conan O’Brien
Dave going to CBS was WAY better in the long run.
We miss you Johnny
Hopefully the infamous walk-on will appear on this official channel soon.
Why was it infamous?
@@kgraydakota It was the final time Carson *ever* appeared on television.
Yes! It’s on Giller’s channel in a compilation.
@@VectraQS Right, but that makes it notable or significant moment. There was nothing "infamous" about it.
Always wondered what he was about to say before deciding to leave the stage
i saw this episode and made my day
That pair of Adidas sneakers should be in the Smithsonian.
For some reason that look never really caught on.
OG
Aha the world before the internet and social media
We miss you, Johnny Carson
the size of that phone
I forgot about these
It smells funny 🤣
Inhale deeply…
Oh man, I remember having a crush on that cue card lady. I never knew her name.
I like that because typically I only fax sternly worded letters to corporations and governments.
WHAT THE FAX?!?!
Are you faxing kidding me?
**sigh** These days are gone forever :(
Which is why this channel, and others like it are so important.
I am not sure if Johnny ever had to send his own faxes.....
Johnny Faxed jokes to Dave for years :)
It left here funny…

freeze at 3:24...the joke was already written on the cue card...the whole johnny faxing thing was just a distraction...
Did Dave buy that jacket to grow into?
3:20 Tony Mendez is a girl!? WoW!
Who you got? Carson or Letterman?
Carson.
Carsinio.
You can't go wrong telling a joke if it smells funny.
...what was the reference to some trial that Dave was involved with in his real life?
Dave testified in court against the woman who kept breaking into his house.
@@doctortheopolis3122 oh yeah...I think I remember that.
I feel like Dave wrote that joke ...
I don’t know. Johnny did love a good Zsa Zsa Gabor joke - and he seemed to nod knowingly as the punchline was delivered.
Johnny dug Zsa Zsa jokes…
Just musing about this (my wife doesn't get it). 32 years ago. You'd have to be over ... what? 45 to remember this? YIKES.
Fax machine kids, you wouldn't understand.

8 days before I turned 21 and two months before my father died. I didn't watch late night until sometime later.
