Interesting review. I have had a Roadmachine 01 Four since March this year and enjoy it a lot. It was AUS 10k. It does not have th3 integrated cockpit, so after a bike fit the stem was changed from 110 mm to 90 mm and it fits very well. All the cables are hidden. I am 67, typically do about 200+ k a week, usually including at least one 3 hr or longer ride. This bike is more comfortable, faster and stiffer than my Tuscany Litespeed Ti bike, which is saying something . I recently upgraded the wheels to Caden deCadence 49 mm clinchers, and they have improved the the bike’s handling, ease to maintain > 30 km/hr without impacting comfort. Currently running conti 5000 go 25 mm front and 28 mm rear clinches. I have been very happy with this bike, and look forward to every ride. After listening to your review, I might now take it out on some gravel and see how I go.
Hi.. I just have RM 01 three, I agree this bike is very comfortable. but for "fast", I'm still learning it. Usually I use an alloy frame, 50mm carbon wheel, and hub ceramic bearing from the superteam. Holding the speed at 40 km/h is not difficult. But now I'm really struggling, I need a lot of power to hold at 40 km/h. The bike is comfortable at 36km/h, but over 40km/h is very hard. Can you help with your experience? Tq
Hi there, I am 68 now, still enjoying the bike a great deal, the only way I can hold 40 km + for any length of time on my own these days is downhill with a tail wind 😁
BMC and the other manufactures know that very few folks will buy this 12k bike. They hope the bike will give them ‘high end’ face time so their lower priced bikes will get our attention. I worked in the high end audio industry and I knew a 50k turntable was built too show case the much lower models in the under 10k range.......very few of the 50k sold world wide but their lower models had a waiting list to buy..... it works.
Interesting seeing this video after hearing James, Dave and Zach rant about the issues with internal cable routing after the SL7 recall on Nerd Alert. This video is a great example of how the bike media is part of the problem. One of the first statements is about how clean the aesthetic of the integrated cockpit is. Wonder how this bike would fare after 5 years of riding on rough trails.
It's not just the cycling media. A lot of the comments on the TCR vs Tarmac videos were about how the TCR doesn't have a full integrated cockpit in 2021 and how that makes it look ugly. Personally I think the TCR has both a modern as well as a timeless look all the while being way easier to work on. Unfortunately, it's a near certainty that Giant will move to an integrated cockpit for the next iteration with so much being made of external cables.
The audacity to charge 12 grand for a bicycle in itself is breathtaking. No matter how many finicky 'real world' improvements they're trying to cram into a bike. The next recall is just around the corner. For every tiny little 'blib' in the complex hydraulics or electronics it's a costly trip or shipping back to the shop. Maybe ok for pro riders. Even pro mechanics are often having a hard time to deal with some of its half baked technology. Building a bike Yourself, then You get what You need and understand Your bike. Yes! There are people who think they are better riders when they get sucked into such a scam. At least the bike looks good in a coffee shop and on phone pics. Ahhh, that BLUE alone is worth 5 grand.
Simple if you don’t want to buy it don’t. To date haven’t had any issues with Di2. In fact it changes gear way better under load than my campy record 10 speed mech on my Litespeed, even after just replacing all the cables …..I do most of my own maintenance and to date on the BMC haven’t had to do anything other than basic lube and chain waxing
The same can be said of cars, watches, suits, televisions, etc, etc. It is as much a luxury good as it is a practical item. There will always be a market for it. 98% of cycling is getting out there & how you feel. If owning something like this is what people choose to do with their money & gets them out on the road, then it's worth it to them.
I was going to make a long ass comment related to the price.....but, in the end, this is a bike that's not made for me. Full stop. There is a group of people out there for whom $12k is chump change, and that's who BMC are talking to. So, average Joe's don't really need to say anything about this, we're not part of the discussion.
Yep…I’ve been involved in cycling long enough that I can’t really get my head around the fact that $2500 now gets you a “starter bike” rather than a top-of-the-line, custom, pro-quality machine! But, I’ve slowly come to the conclusion that for a certain segment of society, spending $1000 is like me spending $10! And that’s a big part of why there are outrageously priced bikes like this one!
Hank Schrader I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but 20 years ago (not all that long ago to some of us!) you could get a pro-quality bike for $2500 (or less!). Don't tell me inflation alone now makes a "pro" bike cost almost 5 times that!
Inflation is a minor player in how these products are priced. These businesses are here to make money, not to provide charity services. Price rises due to "inflation" alone implies a certain degree of fairness towards the consumer, which is a complete fantasy.
I have this bike in the 02/Force form and I love it. To compare it to my Canyon Aeroad would be silly. It's a really nice all day rider when you just want to ride tempo or mix and match between gravel and road. It wouldn't be my only bike as I still love to get out on a good race bike and carve tarmac, but it is a nice addition to the stable.
Similar situation to mine. I have both the Team Machine 01 and an Aeroad… love them both for their purpose! Only makes sense to have such a setup (plus a CX bike) because I ride over 15,000km per year though….
I think regardless of this video's conclusion (i'm like 10 secs in as i'm typing) i hope we all agree that BMC needs to radically change how it names its bikes because their current convention is unbelievably clunky
The gravel and dirt must be much smoother out there than it is here. For me this is an endurance road bike not a multi-surface bike. Also - the Salsa Warrbird and Raleigh Tamland 2 came out in 2014 - much wider clearance than that. This bike seems to slide solidly between two worlds making it a very expensive bike that I wouldn't reach for that often...
You discuss the very expensive price of this bike but didn’t mention that the BMC comes in an 02 model with the same riding characteristics at a small weight gain and easier adjustment of the stem height and length. Just my two cents
I have a 2021 Roadmachine 01 three (Force). I have upgraded the force chainset to a Red 48/35 from the stock 46/33 which is too small, and the cassette to 10-28 as I just wanted a more efficient drive and never used the huge range on the rear 10-36. Had to buy a small topcone from BMC to lower the stem too, which I found annoying. other than that it's a great mile muncher but it can still go fast.
This is just the evolution of the original 2017 Roadmachine, which itself is an evolution of the BMC Granfondo. Nothing about this bike is gravel-bike or multisurface: it's an road endurance bike with a more sporty/aggresive leaning that can *barely* take 33mm tyres. BMC refreshed it in 2021 with *marginally* wider tyre clearance, a taller/shorter geometry tweak, and, uh, that's it. Calling this a multisurface bike is just saving design budget by me-tooing it more sensible edurance bikes from other manufacturers: at least those will swallow 38-40mm tyres.
If you can fit 35s, and it's slightly more stable than your average endurance bike, then you can ride it on gravel. There's nothing else to it. They aren't claiming that it's a mountain bike.
@@sabamacxI have the 2017 model and tried 32 mm and it worked. I went down to 30 mm though. As this is a newer model with slightly more tire clearance I have no doubt that a 32 mm fits well otherwise I don’t know where the more tire clearance claim comes from.
I own the 2019 version with Force, DT swiss ERC 1400 wheels, PM and seperate handlebar/ stem for about half the price. Also very blue. I love my bike and run it 28mm Conti GP 5000. Don't understand, why BMC went the way of less adaptability. I am quite tall with shorter arms, why I choosed a smaller frame I would normally do, as it is quite long for an endurance bike. Good to know, that I don't have to upgrade. Nobody should spend 12k for a bike, where you have to exchange the crankset to upgrade to a PM. With my not exactly cheap Force model, the additional investment was quite reasonable though.

Really frustrating to pay US 7500 in a defective product and have the vendor treating you as if you were stupid.
