for the last 8 years, this is just one of the many episodes that are becoming true. As a WWII veteran, who personally knew the horrors of war and dictatorship, Rod Serling made these as fiction, and as a warning of that it COULD happen here. I'm 71, and as a kid glued to our old black and white Zenith TV (remember those ?) watching TZ, in the end, to be able to sleep at night, you kept telling yourself.. it was all just fiction.
That's true. Our country elected a senile old man in 2020 who was controlled by group of Fascists who were intent on sending their political adversaries to prison on "trumped up" charges.
We sure as fuck did NOT! And clearly, with so many millions who just blissfully and ignorantly CAST VOTES for fascism, we will NOT be learning any time soon.
Extreme crazy off the rails left or right can bring horrific results. Also addressing people’s concerns before they get so large and exaggerated keeps people a part of the whole and not feeling like they are on the outside tempted to do the wrong things. Definitely food for thought though for sure.
You forgot, " They turned the World into One Huge Graveyard and along With the Bodies Buried ; They Buried Their Compassion; Care; and Humanity as well ! " That is why these Old Buildings Still Stand As A Reminder ! "
It is astounding how much these words sound like the words of Chump, the GOP, and MAGA. Hate never really changes, does it? eta : BTW, I'm curious as to why you didn't include the "big reveal" of that episode, which was the speaker in the shadows was actually Hilter, but Hilter as an old man? And I always use this spelling of his name for, I think, obvious reasons.
Howard Caine, best known as Major Hochstetter on "Hogan's Heroes", plays a part in this story as Nick, one of the party members whose departure from the planet is prompted by the shadowy figure, becoming a martyr and rallying point, à la Horst Wessel. Bernard Fein, one of the creators of HH, also appears. Interestingly, we're just a few years from the departure from the planet of a guy by the name of "Rockwell" -- not the artist -- and there's a loose parallel between what happens to him and what happens to Dennis Hopper's character.
When I bought the box set of the complete Twilight Zone series the one episode I was eager to watch was He's Alive. I've only seen a few of the hour-long episodes and didn't like this longer format and felt these stories might have been better served in the original length. This was the case with He's Alive. It's an interesting premise but it's not enough to fill that allotted run time and the writing is (as wiry many other episodes) gets very heavy-handed at times. The idea of fascism being an ideology that lives long after those who originated it and can poison the minds of those who share a similar hatred and fear is an interesting set-up for a story. Rod Serling often used this platform to explore themes that might have encountered opposition from the network and sponsors, but he was subversive enough to hide these stories under the guise of science-fiction and fantasy. My favorite is Death's Head Revisited, which can be seen as a companion piece to this episode, but is far more effective. This suffers from some cringeworthy acting, especially by both Dennis Hopper and the actor playing Hitler. When Hopper says "neighbors" it was like hearing Frank Booth speaking decades before he came into being. If there is one subject that might have benefited from the hour-long format it should have been this one. As much as I admire Rod Serling as a man who saw in television a medium that had the potential to address topics to a wide audience, I thought his writing style was very clumsy and preachy, but given such a brief amount of time subtly had to be sacrificed to get the message across. Sadly this is still an issue. Were he still alive he'd be saddened that it had dug deeper roots in the American culture and was thriving and no longer just fringe groups who met in isolation. At the end of Death's Head Revisited a character asks why the death camps remain standing. Serling, in his narration, gives us the sobering message that they need to remain standing as a monument to the period of men's madness and when they turned it into an open grave. Serling was a man who was very concerned about the direction of humanity and tried to write about them. I highly recommend watching Submitted For Your Approval. It's a fascinating profile of Serling, especially the battles he had with networks to get his television plays presented as he had written them and not censored, which often the case.
There are several excellent Twilight Zone episodes that address fascism. The writing is excellent, and the acting and direction are top-notch. It is frightening that this is the same argument MAGAts are putting forth today -- presenting white men as a disenfranchised minority. White men ARE the franchise even though they are statistically the minority, and therein lies the problem.
Fell in love with The Twilight Zone and Rod Serling when I was way younger. The original run showed me how to mix commentary and entertainment properly (something majorly lost of major movies today) when making my own films and this is definitely one of my favorite episodes given how prescient it is. Fascism isn't an ideology, it's a method that was created by nationalist, it is a secular version of the governing structure of the Catholic Church from which it was modeled. Communism is also not an ideology, it is a protocol for how to exploit a society by colonizers, and the colonizers that created the protocol are exo-nationalist. I grew up on the Twilight Zone, and I fully understand where Serling and others of his generation were coming from after having experienced the horrors of WWII, but I'd also point out that history tends to run in cycles; the notion that anyone who might object to some minority must by definition be akin to a Nazi overlooks the fact that while the Nazis killed six million in the concentration camps, the Soviets in all likelihood killed over 40 million, the Chinese another 20 million or more...yet we never once hear them taken to task on any level. This is not said to excuse or overlook what the Nazis did, but how is it the case that Germany has been made to pay and pay all the way down to the present day while China is now thoroughly intertwined with our economy?
