    Dometic, ARB and a number of other compressor style fridges are simply...amazing. They use little power on low settings, and work remarkably well. If you are heading out on a trip, you can bring them in the house, plug them into AC and put them into deep-freeze mode. Then when you are ready to go, plug them into your rig in low power mode and they stay nice and cold. I have the same CF-35 but the previous generation, and it is flawless. With an 80 watt solar setup I was able to keep my food nice and cold in very hot summer temps. The batteries would be fully charged in the morning by the time we had finished breakfast.
    These compressors also last for many years of use. I know of people with these who run them in the garage to keep their beer cold, and use them for camping. One guy said he had run his for 3 years non-stop and it still worked like a champ. The chest style lid helps keep the cold in and they are basically a cooler, and airtight. Great units!
    Nice trailer BTW.

      I agree. I did lots-O-research on energy consumption, I chose this one because it fit. 200 watts of solar is right for me. I LOVE it and having fresh food is fantastic in the middle of nowhere. Thank You! Check my other

    I like rewatching your videos, Cosmo. They are very informative and funny. I've never been a huge bread fiend unless it's homemade and fresh so I think I'll be fine with crackers and tortilla shells. They last longer and take up less space. I do like Dave's organic English muffins, so I will buy those when I can find them, but they won't need refrigeration unless I'm in a humid area.

Cosmos, I would have give you credit through your link but, REI screw up an order recently as I get new gear in preparation to my new TAG Boondock Teardrop schedule for December delivery, that they provided me with a 20% coupon and confirmed they will honor for a Dometic purchase! I have a couple 60W (3.5A) solar panel and the Yeti 500W PS. I have another PS around a couple Bioenno 12V, 20Ah LFP type, intended use for my Ham gear (Yaesu 857D)...I intend to put out a lot of portable RF 😂! Will see how it goes to start with...I may need another serious 100-200W panels for some extended “off grid” runs! Cheers.

      hi Lisa. One factor for me was ice. While we all know and love ice I lost a lot of food to the water ice creates. Many loaves of bread turned to mush. While the available space in this small fridge (1 cubic foot) does not see like much it is actually more than the cooler when it was full of ice. Also the ice has to stay in contact with the food or it wont cool it very well. Check my other videos ruclips.net/user/cosmowe

      Hello 78, 23 here I was grounded in mid October, I should be exploring the south right now. My 96 yr old best friend passed away in mid October. He has a complicated high touch estate and he named me executor. I became an instant landlord for several properties in 2 corporations. I have to liquidate all of it. But it aint gonna happen quickly. So I am making the best of going into New York City daily. THANK YOU for asking. I am trying to do this task as fast is possible (maybe faster) but the elephant turns slowly.

    Love the videos! My hubby and I are seriously looking to purchase a Vistabule. We have been to the factory but getting the opinion of an owner speaks volumes and we have a couple of questions we hope you can answer. 1) does your trailer the 11 or 13 inch road clearance; and 2) are you happy with the clearance you have or would you change it? Thanks

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  6 лет назад +1

      Hello. Keep in mind what I have meets my needs and yours may be different. What is the ground clearance of your tow vehicle> Mine id 8.75 inches so the car wont get over anything higher. If I had higher tow vehicle clearance I would want more clearance. My trailer is 10 or 11 inches I did not go for the higher option/ When you do go for the higher option it raided the counter top - not a problem for me but maybe for shorter campers that would be an issue. =Cosmo Check my other videos ruclips.net/user/cosmoweems Better yet SUBSCRIBE ruclips.net/user/cosmoweems?sub_confirmation=1 and

    With out ventilation the compressor is working way too hard, as you have set up a closed loop. Ours rides in the back of the tow vehicle with a dedicated power line coming from the battery.

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  5 лет назад +1

      You bring up a good point. I put spacers around the fridge to give it breathing room. When ever I get somewhere I slide open the doors. When I am driving I leave the cabinet doors partially open.
      Its the best I can do for now. Tow vehicle is stuffed to the roof on longer trips and no room for the fridge. Thank You. Check my other videos ruclips.net/user/cosmoweemsvideos SUBSCRIBE ruclips.net/user/cosmoweems

  • @freedomdove
    @freedomdove 4 года назад +1

    I'm surprised you're keeping it in such a small cabinet. My 12v fridge needs 4" of space on the front and back, and 8" on the end for ventilation. I'm sure it would run without all that space around it but I think it would shorten the lifespan. Idk how I'll be able to give so many square inches to this need but I'll figure out something. I actually have to deal with this times two. The first fridge I bought will only fit my food. I'll need another smaller one for my supplements and oils and other things that need refrigerated. 🤦‍♀️

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  4 года назад +2

      Fitting the fridge is a compromise. I have spacers to keep it a few inches away from the walls. The sliding front doors are usually partially open to prevent heat build up. When traveling I keep the doors open a few inches too. So far no unreasonable heat build up (I have measured it).
      Power is one area that needs a lot of brain work. One thing I found useful was the formula Watts = Volts * amps and the opposite Amps = watts divided by amps. It comes in handy.
      As of this year I have 300 watts of solar (when its sunny) and a 125 amp hour AGM battery. I wish I had a larger battery but it wont fit so I made it work for a few years now. There are times I have gotten close to plugging in the car to charge. If your out west in a sand state with no shadows other than cactus it should not be a problem. Here in the lush north east with forest cover and clouds it’s a challenge at times but so far its working for me. I am at the absolute minimum of what can be done with a fridge of this small size (in my opinion). =Cosmo

    • @freedomdove
      @freedomdove 4 года назад

      Yeah, I'm unsure I would be able to get away with only solar if I was going to be around trees all the time. This might be an issue in summer when I escape the desert heat and head into the mountains. I only have 100w right now but do plan on getting more. Bob showed a Dokio 300w foldable panel on his channel recently that I'm eyeballing. It would be easier to use than trying to chain three 100w panels.
      I will buy another (smaller) solar generator for the second fridge, and use my existing Renogy 100w panel with it. Since the generators are all-in-one, it will make me feel better to have 2 of them in case something happens to one of them when I'm out in the boonies.

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  4 года назад +1

      Its a good idea to actually run the system at home to see how it performs and learn its limitations such as how long it takes to charge etc. I have no doubt you are doing this. Seems like you are approaching from the right angle. There is no substitute for experience. I ran my system at home before I took it on the road. =Cosmo

    • @freedomdove
      @freedomdove 4 года назад

      For sure. I already did a few test runs of my Ausranvik 48qt. With its ability to turn off the low-battery protection, I was able to run it for 55 hours on my lithium Apex unit for one full charge. I'm not sure how long I can get a small fridge to last on a smaller solar generator. I will find out. Lol.

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  4 года назад

      The Apex is a real powerhouse. Its the first I have seen with reset-able circuit breakers. Double the amp hour capacity of the others I have looked at. The real test is how long it takes to recharge on solar. My fridge is one cubic foot. Much smaller but it hold a lot of food, Combined with food that does not need cold I can stay out without a store for a week or two. Why not use a propane camping stove to heat your oils and save electric?

      Hi Virginia. I tried but the water in the bottom was a problem for the Camco fridge fan I use. The fans in my case last a few seasons. I think the fan is most effective in refrigeration system. I definitely workable but you have to do things ices way. Thats not an issue for me.I like electric because I can stay off grid as long as I care to. Thank You for watching. Did you happen to consider a Yeti or similar cooler? We're trying to decide whether it's worth it (we already have a RV fridge but use the coolers for veggies because things often freeze in our RV fridge). It disrupts our camping when we have to go hunting for ice, which doesn't last long in the cheap coolers we now have.

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  6 лет назад +1

      Hello Alice. I added you as a featured channel on my channel@ let me know if you see a bump. I used Coleman $20 cooler insulated with Reflexit. How long ice lasts depends on how hot it is (to state the obvious ha ha). I could not justify $350 for a Yetti when I could get a fridge for $550. I called Yetti and wanted to know the R value for their cooler and they would not disclose it. So how can one compare? My opinion is the thermal difference of a yetti is an inch or two of urathane foam ($under $20 of material. A DIY could be to insulate your own cheap cooler. This guy compares insulation. ruclips.net/video/Epxt30Ws9xE/видео.html When I head out to the sand states or south I may need a cooler again. I will go with a $20 model to start and upgrade if I have to,. No unintentional freezing on my setuo yet. Hey Alice, I have a 25qt cooler from Cabela’s, which has tested the same or better than Yeti in a number of tests. If I pre-cool it 24 hours with those chemical ice things they ship medication recycled (refrozen), then put frozen water bottles in bottom the longest I’ve gotten is 7+ days (they say 5 days). However, if I was buying a cooler again I would just pick up a 50qt Colman Extreme when they go on sale, & use Reflectix. My friend got a 70qt one & he can almost match how long my fancy cooler keeps ice.

  • @dream_weaver5779
    @dream_weaver5779 5 лет назад +1

    Frig's and freezer cool by discharging the heat thru there outer surface. They pull in air thru there vents. By covering you frig's out skin with reflect x you are causing the Frig / freezer to work much harder to cool. This a common thing RV and off grid people do. Some one started it and many now promote it. Bad idea. Just call a MFG and ask them about how there frig / freezer work. On the inside yes that works, out side not so. Just remember vents breath in, the outer sink breaths the heat out. The cooling coils are in the walls. They need to discharge the heat.

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  5 лет назад +1

      A few corrections. The heat exchange and compressor is where the heat is. That area and the fan and vents circulating air are not covered. That is where the compressor compresses the gas generating heat. The heat is bled off with the fan. Reflectix provides about zero R value insulation. What it does do is reflect radiant heat. The goal here which is effective is to prevent sun from heating the surface of the area being chilled. It woks fine. I have an additional piece of Reflectix which I lay on top when I am in direct sun. Thanks for your comments. =Cosmo Check my other videos ruclips.net/user/cosmoweemsvideos SUBSCRIBE ruclips.net/user/cosmoweems
