Joy, you are such a good teacher despite you saying you are not. Thank you so much for showing the steam a seam awhile ago. I ordered some and just love it. Total knit-sewing game changer. I got in the habit of starting an armhole seam at the back notch and after going all around continuing until the front notch again so between those two points there is a double-stitched line for stability. More important for wovens than knits. On my first ever blouse, my grandma gave me a really tough critique about how badly I did the armhole seams and since then I am really fussy about doing them. You did a great job teaching the fine points of setting a sleeve, Joy!
Hi Joy, I want you to know that I have learned so much from your videos. So far you've taught me how to do a sway back adjustment and now the sleeve as well as all the products you use, steam and seam is something I will get I go through all your videos when I need help learning. Thank you for your time and effort it's very. much appreciated.
Greetings......from the beautiful mountains, of Eastern Kentucky!!! Just wanted to say......I love watching all of your videos!!! So much information, entertainment and FUN!!!!
That top turned out GREAT. Joy you are a magician with thread. I have the pattern and the material to get started and can't wait to get started. Thank you for. being you. Love ya girl!
Terrific tutorial, Joy! Great tip on sewing the seams with a narrow zigzag stitch! I’ve got two hams but never had a sleeve board so I’m off to order one now. It’s been many years since I’ve made any clothing but you’ve made me excited about doing so again! Thank you!
Love your tutorials. Wonderful. Learn something new each time you show a new one. As for your hands: Taking Vitamin D3 daily and squishing a stress ball every so often throughout the day should help your muscles. Vitamin D3 is great for your entire being especially for those of us who spend most of our time inside. Hope this is helpful. I wish you great health, great times and lots and lots of laughs. L
hi Joy, I always tack/hand baste my seams together before sewing to hold them securely so they can't shift, especially the sleeves. I find it more effective than only using pins. It is another step but I find it really helpful. Thanks for sharing this sew-along :)
Hi Joy ,thank you from the bottom of my heart for your willingness to help others...you are the reason I decided to begin my sewing journey...it’s so difficult sometimes when things go wrong and you don’t know exactly what is wrong or how to correct it... I have become so discouraged at times ...I just have to walk away... but I keep watching you and Viv... and sure enough ...the light shone down and the angels sang...and the answers arrive...just want to say a very huge thanks...I’m very grateful for both you and Viv...the two of you really make a difference...in my sewing journey... God Bless!!!
Hi Joy, great tutorial. I really like the abb t shirt. When I do my hems I use a Clover Hot Ruler Press Perfect ( from amazon) . I give it a memory fold before I sew it together. I lay the sleeve, on my ironing board fold the correct amount of hem over the hem ruler and press. Then put the steam a seam on the edge, then sew sleeve seam. I just find it easier to do it flat. Hope I explained that good enough. Have a great weekend. Val🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️
Joy, a very nice top! I really like the shorter length too. I always enjoy your sew alongs. You are fun and easy to follow. God Bless and Happy Sewing!
Wow this felt like a real class! I knew how to do this but appreciate this refresher and learned new technique of using the tape. You are a great teacher. Thank you for taking the time to teach us.
It’s nice to see someone who is as particular as I am lol. Sometimes I drive my own self crazy being so OCD about everything, but that’s how God made me.
Joy THANK YOU for this wonderful series.Thank you for your time and patience you have shared with us! I will refer back to these when I get stuck ! God Bless You and Jerry!
I sew almost every day, and I have learned so much from your tutorials. They are so entertaining, and there's so much value in your experience. Thank you.
Joy my sewing group “The Sew ‘n Sews” meet on Thursday. We were talking about you. Joy you are LOVED. Every was sayin how much they just love your videos. How helpful your videos are. Kathy said Joy has taught me so much!!! You know how I feel about you. They love you, Vivmom and Whitney (TomKat Stitchery).
We love your personality and sewing info, Joy. You also remind me of sewing tips I forgot as I don't do as much garment sewing anymore since my kids are grown as I do altering and misc projects. Thanks so much for your time❤happy healthy sewing year. Susan
Love you girl and show that machine who is boss!! It’s been a long long time since I had a entire sewing session where everything went right!! You don’t want to stop when it’s going great, but you need to get some sleep before your next shift at the hospital!! Dang, if I was only rich and could sew all the time!! Life is funny!
You are the most sensible, practical teacher and keep it interesting. That top looks great. You could wear with white pants or the turquoise color in the top. Really loved watching this sew along.
Hey Joy! Mary here! I want you to know that no one is equal to you as far a getting my learn on in the sewing dept! Since i have been around the block a few times I watch tutorials and I think oh, I knew that-you know? I’m happy to review certain things, but with you I swear I learn some tidbit (pearl of wisdom) about sewing and even life, every time I watch your channel I may whip up a top to throw on IG if you do a hashtag. I have a pattern that I want to try that I got recently in my big haul from OfferUp. There were some plus size patterns in there but they went down to a size 10 so I can use them. I am going to use Simplicity 1945. It has a longer cowel, is more fitted and I has a cap sleeve. I’ve never seen one like this & I really like it. You sewing class gives me.reason to make it. I watched the whole series and it was fantastic. I will recommend it because ,you give so mUch good info on the difference between knits and woven fabrics . I‘ve begun.to re- explore (?) woven fabrics lately and am loving it, but yeah there is a huge difference.Def giving my serger and cover stitch more of a workout! Thanks again for sharing.
Joy you are the best.. I love when you show us up close with the camera... I learn soooo much... you are the best girl... so appreciate you... sorry you are having so much trouble with your internet.
You made a stunning top....I really like the colors in the fabric and it looks good on you - especially at the new length you're going to cut it to. Thanks for taking so much time with this pattern....I can only buy pdfs on line, so appreciate this tutorial.
Thank you for your time I am trying to decide if I should get a pattern fitting at system like Sure Fit or something else I am figure challenged and need to be able to make own patterns I am on a fixed income now so I have to be sure before I invest I know how to sew but you still learn new. I never sewed for my self Viv has got me interested in sewing for my self after watching you make this top I am on fire
Amazon is going to love you! I’m placing my 3rd order in as many days since I started watching your videos. I’m sorry you didn’t have affiliate links on your older videos. I don’t know if you get enough to make it worth your while to go back and add them but once someone finds your channel I feel certain, like me, they’ll go back and watch them all. You are a blessing!
Hi, you are such a JOY to watch!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your videos. You have such an awesome personality!! I have one question, why do you zig zag your seams? Love your top!
Good tutorial, joy. You make putting in sleeves easy peezy. I see you have the babylock enlighten overlocker (I'm British) I love mine. I don't know what I would do without it.
Great video. You have so much patience, you are a natural born teacher. Paper was a good idea, I have used a small piece of tear away stabilizer. On your first video you talked about the pdf pattern printing. I’m going to try www.pdfplotting.com. Pricing looked reasonable although shipping was a bit high, I think I’ll wait till I have a couple of patterns to order. There is a good RUclips video from Stiches and Seams about how to figure out how to place the order. I hate taping all those pages plus the cost of ink and paper is not cheap. I have learned so much from you making this top, patten ease and steam a seam are a game changer. Thank you for all the time you put into these video’s, you have no idea how much we appreciate them. I’m lucky our Joann’s is right next door to Lowe’s so he drops me off and heads over to Lowe’s.
Another way to start your seam without trouble is start in about a quarter inch and back stitch, then go forward. I never have any trouble starting a seam when I do this.
Thank you for all your hard work not only sewing, but editing the video. It is very much appreciated. I’m going to rewatch your FBA video today and work on my pattern. One thing that I am wondering. Why do you use both the sewing machine and then just clean up the seams with the serger. Especially since it’s a knit fabric? Just curious. Thanks again 🙏🙏❤️
I always use the sewing machine first because it is much easier to rip out a sewn stitch than a serged stitch, and it leaves lot less messy threads all over the place. Just me. If you are SURE of the fit, then serge it to begin with.
I love the top. This is eye opening for me -- I might not choose such a vibrant large print in fabric, but I LOVE your finished top! Question about your sleeve installation, please. You use the sew in the round method, and I think you said you prefer this. Is it simply a sewing preference, or do you have a preference for the finished product over the flat method? Thanks for sharing!
I love your videos. You always give me the oomph to go on when I get frustrated with my current project. I also learn so many things from you, both techniques and products! I love the top you are wearing and would like to make a similar one. Did you make up that pattern? What fabric (type of knit) is it made of? It drapes so beautifully! P. S. I splurged on SureFit Design for Christmas.
Joy, I have a brand new Bernina780 and the starting point always knots up and sometimes I have to take the bobbin, etc. out to clear it! Drives me insane!
Hi Joy, yay I finished my top and I’m so pleased, I made the 3/4 sleeve version, did the FBA and it fits. it’s a great top and I followed you all the way, and really enjoyed myself. You are a star ⭐️ Thank you for taking the time to talk us through the making. X
Joy I love your blue top it’s so pretty. I love it. Joy I got a gravity iron Whitney from TomKat Stitchery showed it and the water tank is above hooked to the ceiling or an IV pole. It’s the best
Joy Bernhardt oooo Joy I live mine!!! The water stays up above in the tank and the iron has a lot of steam but no water coming thru the iron so not drips or leaks. It is heavy. The iron is heavy but it is worth it. It also has a great Teflon plate. This is the first iron that I mean gets so hot. If I sit by it and see I get hot but I tell you it wonderful. And shoots you could easily get an IV pole. LOL. I got mine from Wawak like Whitney said. She got hers there too. Love you girl Kris
I thought I was the only one with tons of trash cans. Also thanks for the tip regarding the doctor table paper. I got som from amazon. I still have my seam gauge from 7th grade. I am now 69. The new ones are not as nice as my old one.
Totally agree about the old ones being way nicer than the new ones. That is true about so many things. I think things are made to break so you have to keep buying them again. We are the same age!
When I was learning to sew I was told that if you set a sleeve into an armhole it will have a different functionality when you lift your arm to one that has been sewn in with open side seams. Your whole top rides up with your sleeve with the latter method which I don’t like either.
Joy, do you think a dress form is a big help with fitting. I have been looking at PGM. They are expensive but I think it might be helpful. Do you use yours frequently? Margaret
Love everything about your video! You make it so easy to see and follow. One question I have is “what stitch would you recommend for hemming knits on just a regular sewing machine?”Thank you!
A longer straight stitch: Maybe 3.5 or 4 if you have plenty of room to go around without stretching. If you may stretch the hem when putting it on, then use a small zig-zig.
Hi Joy? My mom always said "Usually, the ugliest fabric make the prettiest garments." I have kept that in mind all of my 70 years sewing and I've learn not to jump to conclusions about the garment until I finish it. Then' if I still don't like it. I donate it or wad it. However, that doesn't happen very often. I want to ask you if you know an easy way to get the paper off the steam a seam? I have so much trouble with that. Great Tutorial !
Hi Joy, if we want to make the top without the cowl neckline can we? If so...would you be able to show us how to make a facing or would we just bind it with self made binding? I live in AZ and I really don't have the need for blouses with that much neck covering. Thanks in advance. BTW I would bet that due to you shining light on this pattern they diby.club removed it from their free pattern list. So they are grateful to you for picking their pattern I'm sure! This was an awesome idea by the way! Maybe this is something you should consider doing. Free pattern sew-along 🤷🏽♀️! Just and idea.
I just bought steam a seam2 but mine does not say light. Should I exchange it? Check with QVC or HSN for Rowenta's. I can not remember which one. Sometimes they have good prices. They have them for moderate priced ones to expensive ones.
Hey Joy, can you tell us what kind of cotton you use to make your pants? I was thinking of getting some Kona cotton, but it just doesn't seem thick/durable enough for pants. I need some cotton slacks so badly, but just cant seem to find some in store that I think would work well.
I really prefer STRETCH cottons for pants. Just a little stretch is a lot better than none. The KONA wrinkles quite a lot. Usually, it is the only fabric in the right color though.
Hello Joy! So glad to see you! I feel like my mojo comes back after your videos. Thank you! After my iron unscrewing video ( lol ruclips.net/video/fvF2P7EfzIs/видео.html) when I bought a new one, I figured out that they suggest you to not use the iron before the light ( for heating) goes off just because this dripping can happen and is normal.
I love watching all your sew alongs! I call you "my new best friend"!! love, love, love your love for all!
Joy, you are such a good teacher despite you saying you are not. Thank you so much for showing the steam a seam awhile ago. I ordered some and just love it. Total knit-sewing game changer. I love it that even your sewing machine eats knit fabric. Makes my feel better about my hungry sewing machine.
Oh I like that. I like both lengths. Great video.
Thanks for the comment about you have to be more stubborn than the machine and/or project and just keep going--just what I needed to hear.
hi Joy, I always tack/hand baste my seams together before sewing to hold them securely so they can't shift, especially the sleeves. I find it more effective than only using pins. It is another step but I find it really helpful. Thanks for sharing this sew-along :)

Thank you so much for this video. SO informative. I thought I knew......I didn’t.
Joy, you are so wonderful, were you a teacher ? You are very good. I just found you & will learn a lot about sewing . Love ❤️ you Already. ❤️
Looks great Joy..beautiful job!!!
Hi Joy, thank you for the video. I made the top too.😅
I have found pressing the hem in before I put the steam a seam on really helps. The fabric remembers that fold.
Yes. I always press my hems before serging and SAS.
Boss that material Joy! Great tutorial.
Hi, you are such a JOY to watch!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your videos. You have such an awesome personality!! I have one question, why do you zig zag your seams? Love your top!
Girl I dont by the fluffy top right bottom. That outfit looked nice. Great job!
Joy where did you purchase your curve runner, Love to see you sew ,keep it up please please.Thank You❤️
That was an excellent tutorial.
That was another good instruction, very valuable. Love the top...!! 🌞 💗
Good tutorial, joy. You make putting in sleeves easy peezy. I see you have the babylock enlighten overlocker (I'm British) I love mine. I don't know what I would do without it.
Very pretty colors on this top look great together, love it.

Love it! You definitely have a waist (think I need a trampoline) lol.
Thanks Joy, I just love all you tutorials and videos. I also love the blue top you have on, did you make it Joy? is it a sure fit design pattern?
Joy I love your blue top it’s so pretty. I love it. Joy I got a gravity iron Whitney from TomKat Stitchery showed it and the water tank is above hooked to the ceiling or an IV pole. It’s the best

Hey Joy, Wawak sells this sleeve board. They charge $24.85. Looks like the Amazon one is unavailable right now.
You should try the zizag stitch on 0.5 width and 1.85 width.
Hi Joy? My mom always said "Usually, the ugliest fabric make the prettiest garments." You are probably pressing too much. Only a second to two before removing the paper.
Do you sew your knits with the straight stitch plate?
Thank you for your tutorial! What is the benefit of using Steam-aSeam as opposed to just pressing and sewing?
Knit does NOT want to be still like cotton does. It will wrinkle and gap and just be difficult. The SAS keeps it steady while you sew it.
I use the 5,5 stitch plate
Love the hashtag ides, please let us know
I just bought steam a seam2 but mine does not say light. Should I exchange it? Check with QVC or HSN for Rowenta's. I can not remember which one. Sometimes they have good prices. They have them for moderate priced ones to expensive ones.
Yes, you will want the LITE for knits, unless you are using very heavy ones. The SAS is just to hold the knit still until you can sew it down.
Joy Bernhardt thank you! I will get the lite version. See, how much you are teaching us? Well, me for sure! Thanks again!
Can you please show us how to draft a bodice block using our own measurements.
I use Sure-fit Designs for that, and I will be doing a tutorial on that in late February.
Which Bernina do you have?
♡♡♡
You going to take it in the back. How? I do like it short with the pants.
I may take it in along the side seams, if at all.
very nice lovely on u
My iron throws out that dirty water if I accidentally set the dial setting on steam clean instead of steam.
