These batteries use a 3 way fuse that is blow by the control chip. The fuse blows for an undervoltage or if a cell is disconnected. If you put a solder blob it will try to blow it again as the fault is saved in the eeprom memory of the controller chip. The only way to get it working again is to reset the fault. This is done by resetting the PFF permanent failure flag using an SMBus device.

Yes, and those usually cost a good deal of money, so most people don't have one.

Hey guys, you can try this method but don't expect too much to succeed. Many batteries have complex control chips (like those from Texas Instruments) that will just not reset, no matter what kind of jumpstart you try. When cells voltage drop below a certain value the chip will trigger a fault status, and cutts Vcc output. The only way of getting your battery to work again in this case is to get a USB to VPIO interface to read then change chip parameters, and if you ain't ready for that better go spend 35 bucks and just buy a new battery.

Yes many of them self destruct, but many of them will not self destruct. It's a shame that the bms can't be purchased separately. I am building a laptop with a non-priority bms that won't kill itself, and that can be repurchased any time.

In case of my old compaq armada 7770dmt it's impossible.
Got three broken batteries, one did work once but when charging to like 69% it suddenly stopped charging and never worked again.
However the battery voltage was just fine as every cell was well over 3,7V so dunno what happened.

    > Did you connect a small wire for a second between the positive (+)
    > battery and the positive BMS? Can you make a drawing explaining?
Basically you just need to provide
power to the BMS. So the first step is to figure out where the +
and the - is for power in to the BMS. Then provide appropriate
power. The easiest way to do that if you have access to the
battery is to simply use a wire connected to the battery to
provide power. But, when using the battery for power, you only
need to provide power to the one that is switched, usually this is
the +, but sometimes the -. You can provide power to both if you
want. Make sure that you provide - to the -, and + to the +.

The blown fuse is intensional. The controller sends a charge to blow the fuse if it detects an overcharge or under charge condition or the charge recharge count reaches a predermined level to prevent the battery from being put back into use. Newer systems use a firmware locking flag which the controller sets for the same purpose and the equipment for resetting that flag is horrendously expensive initially and is ongoing on an annual basis.

    • @WayneSallee-comTech
      @WayneSallee-comTech  2 года назад

It could be easily done by setting a transistor to ground, that is connected to the power in near the fuse.
Have you seen any evidence of a controller sending a charge to blow the fuse?

@@jemsncrystals If it creates a spark, then you are doing something wrong, or the bms is defective.
It's also a good idea to use a very thin wire, or something with high resistance to reduce the risk of messing something up, when resetting the switch.
Make sure that you have your batteries hooked up right. You probably have them right, as it is easy to just hook them back up the way the old ones were. Make sure that the total battery voltage is correct. You probably have this right, but double check.
Now locate the + and the - connections on charge connector on your battery pack. This is where you are probably going wrong. The + will usually have 2 pins, and the - will usually have 2 pins. The data lines will have 1 pin each. You want to connect the + to +, and if that does nothing, connect the - to -. After making the proper connection check the charge port voltage on the battery pack, you should now have proper voltage coming out of your charge port on your battery pack. If not, then your laptop will give an error.
To reiterate, you are to connect the + of the charging port, to the far + of the batteries. In other words you are connecting total voltage to total voltage.

      WayneSalleeTech thanks for quick reply.
First of all, the spark that I mentioned earlier, is not a spark actually; but its kind of the thing when you trying to make a connection. So its very very dim and then it goes.
Secondly, I checked the total voltage on the battery pack (original that came with the laptop) is coming out 15.6
And the new cells are coming out 14.3volts (by multimeter)
iam using the PCB board of the original Battery and I know that all the voltages are correct because I have double checked it with the sales layout that came in the original battery and also I am certain about their Polarity. Because I arranged another PCB board of the same battery locally and I know I'm right because I burned that second board by connecting the cells wrong so I know it is right because if it was wrong then this original PCB board should also burn but it's not so ha ha and I am doing exactly as you are Showing in the video the positive to the positive and after that I check the terminals of the battery pack by multimeter it shows me the rating of 0.09 then it goes to 0.0 8-7-6 - and ultimately to zero, so I guess the voltage is coming after jumpstarting the battery pack but it's not being stable why is that I really appreciate your help.

Apply Power to the power connections on the BMS. The BMS has data connections, and power connections. The power connections are usually at the ends, and will almost always consist of 2 connections soldered together. This will charge the batteries, and also reset the BMS after you replaced the batteries, because when you replace the batteries, the voltage drops to nothing, and the BMS turns off. Solvents usually don't work, because any solvent that will dissolve the glue will also dissolve the plastic case, though the solvent does make it easier to open if you don't care about it not snapping back together. I have an Asus X542 2S battery it wasn’t giving any output so, I connected it to battery (+) directly and was working fine, but from last week it stopped charging! I checked it found the BMS not letting it charge! Maybe, it’s cycle count is reached.
So, is there any way to reset the BMS memory or directly bypass it?
The 2 battery cells are fine.

About all I can tell you is to make sure that you are connecting it correctly, and to use a resistor to make the connection to limit surge of power. I got so fed up with the battery proprietary nonsense, and other proprietary nonsense, that I built my own laptop.

    > I certain point I realize the it shows voltage 15.9 on pins but for just a second of time then 0 volts. Will you please help me in this build, what could be the issue? How do I fix this problem.
    > Attaching few photos of my battery pack circuit.
    >
Test each battery and let me know what the voltage is for each battery.
I am assuming from your pictures that those 4 batteries are in series, and that none of them are dummy batteries.
It sounds like you have identified the + and the - terminals that the laptop uses. After being sure that you have correctly identified those terminals, apply 4.1 volts times 4 (number of batteries in series) = 16.4 or higher, because of voltage drop in the BMS (less than 18 volts).
While charging test the voltage of each battery, and see if the voltage goes up.
If it is able to charge the batteries, then after you get the batteries to 4.1 volts each, try again to see if the bms will give you power.
BMS calculates batteries as fully charged when battery voltage reaches 4.2 and amps drop to specific level.
    Let me know the results.

Yes, none of them are dummy batteries. Some battery packs will have space for more batteries, than the BMS is designed for, so to take up space in the battery pack they put a plastic dummy in so that the batteries don't jiggle around.
Did you try applying 18 volts to the BMS to see if the BMS would supply power to the batteries. Your laptop power supply would work for this.

Usually the laptop BMS will have the following wires labeled on the board:
    VG Voltage Ground
    VL Voltage Low
    VM Voltage Medium
    VH Voltage High
    VP Voltage Power
The corresponding voltage at those connections is:
    0 volts Voltage Ground
    4 volts Voltage Low
    8 volts Voltage Medium
    12 volts Voltage High
    16 volts Voltage Power
If the BMS detects bogus voltages there, it will not power.

    LP2 4 volts
    LP3 8 volts

That's why I like to use a real thin wire when testing things like that.
You want to connect the positive that connects to the computer to the main positive of the battery pack. Use a voltage meter to check the voltage between main positive of the battery pack, and main negative of the battery pack to make sure the voltage is right. If it is, then check the voltage between the two positive connections that you tried connecting to. A voltage meter only allows a tiny amount of power to go though, allowing you to safely test the different connections. Check the different connections with a voltage meter to see what you have.

Hello. I have an X541SC laptop and the battery died. It lasted 2-3 hours, but I can no longer run the laptop with it. When I took it out and measured + and -, there is no voltage. I told myself it was dead. I took another second hand, but i did not measure it before taking it. I just took it and put it on the laptop, but it's the same case. When I measured it, again there is no voltage of + and -, but the batteries themselves on both sides give 11-12 volts. Does anyone have any idea if this is a dead board / battery processor, or for some reason there is a protection that has turned on and stopped the output voltage? I found this on the internet:
Some batteries are equipped with a solid-state switch that is normally in the “off” position and no voltage is present at the battery terminals. Connecting the switch terminal to ground or pulling it up often turns the battery on. If this does not work, the pack may need a code for activation. Battery manufacturers keep these proprietary codes a well-guarded secret to which even service personnel have no access.

@@OldboyWOW Wow that stinks that you didn't test the battery before connecting it to your laptop. At that voltage your lithium cells are fully charged. What I would do, is jumper the fuse, but don't put it in the laptop. Add voltage to turn the battery pack on, and see if the battery pack will now give voltage. If it works, then you know it was the fuse, but if you then put in in your laptop, it would likely damage the battery bms, since the fuse is jumpered. Before jumpering the fuse, you can test the fuse with an ohm meter to see if it is bad, then jumper it if it is bad.

When replacing batteries it is better to maintain voltage to the bms, but that is a lot of trouble. I am thinking that just maintaining the main voltage instead of all the cells might work just as good. Doing so with a resistor to prevent high amp flow would probably be best.
When that has not been done the bms will shut off. Often you can get it working again by applying power to the main power lines, preferably with a resistor to prevent inrush.
