We Mexicans call that "flip" falcete or as its known in Italian classical music falsetto. It is quite common in many mariachi songs... I would suggest you react to "Por amor" sung by Steeven Sandoval. He was also a former member of Mariachi Vargas with an amazing voice.

I came across this clip by Chance. You might like to know the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán is a Mariachi, A Company, an Institution in México that has existed for over one hundred years. There are all Academic musicians, with their 5 year music College grade, then a narrowing to the Mariachi music, with the performance of at least 2 Instruments, and Voice. They then specialize on to Instruments or Voice. Arturo Has been on of the best voces in the last decade. El ´pastor´ is about a Shepard(pastor) that takes one by one his sheep to grace on wheat, he calls them with his flautin(a small flute made of Wood) from the sierras to the Valleys, and they listen to his pastor, like bewiched. Its a very beautirul song, and as its about sheep/shepards so its sometimes popular in Christmas shows. Cheers!

I'm 67. Years ago I read that I think it was UCLA made a time capsul and they included the most beautiful music. Guess what they picked. Yup, Mariachi Vargas's Malaguena. Of all Mariachi, Huasteca is my favorite, love the falsetto.

From What I Understand as a Mariachi and Banda Singer, the 'Flip' is what we Mexicans call 'Falcete' or as others may know it as Falsetto,
In My Understanding, It's basically making your Voice crack by will, Commanding it to Crack if you will, It differs from the Uncontrollable Cracks however, If it's controllable by will it can sound incredibly pretty, I Can do it and, Truth be Told it's quite easy and many people love it, Just requires practice and Self-Awareness if you say, Know your capabilities and your Voice and you'll be able to do it no Problem.
Again, I'm No Expert, I'm Just A Singer who Enjoys Music, but this is My Understanding and it makes it easier for me to grasp the Concept.

believe it or not..... this singer got even better! liste to his most recent interpretation of this same song. In an interview he said he does a lot of diving for practice, under water diving... to train his breathing and that this has helped him hold notes
