Agree overall, but not in relation to this episode. The whole point of this episode about giving the lesser Airbenders their moment to shine. Seems to me Jinora is playing damsel in distress this episode exactly because she is the superior Airbender and it adds more tension if Kai is the one struggling to find a way to rescue her. If Jinora is every bit as good an Airbender as Tenzin (and note that Tenzin does nothing to challenge or contest that claim), then if you reverse the roles Jinora gets her moment and takes out the poachers single handed, but the rest of the Airbenders get nothing to do and go on thinking they are failures, and so does Tenzin by extension - the conflict of the episode isn't resolved.
Nobody hasn't mentioned it but imagine being an air acolyte and harmonic convergence did not bless you with the gift of airbending. Even though you dedicated your whole life to a culture 😂
The fact that none of them did makes it even more sad. Imagine the universe saying “fuck you guys in particular” and giving everyone _except_ them the one thing they were tying to live up to.
That would’ve been another interesting plot that unfortunately the show just didn’t have enough time to explore. On a similar note, I never understood why Zaheer WASN’T a former Air Acolyte that just went bad. Like…the backstory was right there and it would’ve been very interesting.
My favourite scene from this episode though is when the baby sky bison start flying but they don’t know how to propel themselves so they’re just floating up from the ground with faces saying “Muuummm! Can you help us get back down to the ground?.” It’s so cute just seeing their first flight. Also, I just want to cuddle these fuzzy bison!
The one thing that bugged me about legend of kora is they never visited or touched on a post hundred year war fire nation, yet we get to go everywhere else.
Saying Tenzin is out of character is not really that factual when we've seen how impatient and strict he was with Korra when she was learning airbending. This is like a genuine miracle that people got air bending of course Tenzin would feel the pressure to restore his culture. I don't know I don't see this as out of character
11:00 Jinora is acting more like a parody of a Disney princess than anything spiritual Also isn't it weird that the spirits all fucked off when could actually be helpful and protect the Sky Bison but that would require them being more than furniture for a scene

Your point about it being strange that all the airbenders are in the Earth Kingdom really does hit home. Obviously the Earth Kingdom being by far the largest, and having the largest percentage of non-benders, means most WILL come from there just statistically, but it is super odd that there never even seems to be mention of any coming from the Water Tribes or Fire Nation. There's also the elephant in the room: the Air Acolytes. You're telling me not ONE of them became an airbender? If I were them, I'd be pissed. You dedicate your whole life to this culture, and then you watch a bunch of strangers get cosmically fast-passed to the top of the pyramid? It would've been so much easier for Tenzin if he just had at least a few new aribenders that were at least already very familiar with the philosophy. Having some of them able to take up the role Pema does in being the voice of reason would hit pretty well, as they would have a super unique viewpoint. Honestly thinking about this made me really question the purpose and even identities of the air acolytes. Who are they? Are they all from the earth kingdom? Do they come from all around the world? Are any of them benders of other elements that just really like airbender culture? I think these are interesting questions that never get answered, and I think that's sad
Yeah Jinora by far is the "Worf" from Star Trek for Korra, basically they hype up Worf of being this goated security officer, just for him to get rolled by everything to imply that the threats that approach are actually really good, but it happens so much it just implies Worf is weak and bad at his job. Jinora is supposed to be insane at airbending but can't use her bending to defend herself or others at all and the only thing she is supposedly good at they just say she can't cause she needs "space" to meditate. You decended from the heavens to defeat a 10,000 year old being of darkness but you need space to send a message?
Jinora yelling how she should have master tattoos would be like if I gave a speech to my boss on why I should get a promotion, even though I haven't shown why I should get promoted.
Ya gotta love when Pema and Kya had to travel all the way to Tenzin to warn about Zaheer only 2 seconds later it's shown they could have radioed him Why is Tenzin even sitting around telling boring stories to the airnoobs, while the Red Lotus is running around?
Tenzen is written like a cartoon character, which is my biggest gripe (I know, I know, this is a cartoon). He does a typical show, "ohhh, I'll do just do thing A", and then does thing A in the most hamfisted, over the top way. Then he has the (weak) character development, of "ahhh, thing A was bad", even though it was really his implementation of thing A, not the thing itself. It even weakens Korra's advice, because it essentially undermines her original statement.
11:56 My personal take on this one is that Tenzin was forced to be focused more on other aspects of Airbenders, as *The Last Airbender* So it make sense that because of all responsibilities he's never got good at the spiritual part, unlike Jinora
It makes sense, Airbender culture is about detaching yourself from the world, but tenzin couldn't do this because otherwise there would be no more airbenders in the world. Plus he had a responsibility to his family and now all the other airbenders.
Fun fact about humans: Emotions cloud our judgment. This is a chance Tenzin never thought possible or even conceived being thrown at him, a chance to revive a culture he thought would take centuries to rebuild. Of course he’s taking things too far early on. Most of us would too, even if we can say out of the moment that it’s ridiculous.
Tenzin getting overexcited about the cause he's dedicated his life to and missing that new airbenders don't share that connection yet makes a lot of sense. It is weird that the writers chose to have Bumi give him the advice to become rigid again, especially since several of these people just got freed from conscription, but it also would have been a bad beat for Tenzin to not commit to his brother's advice. Another approach to this arc would be Tenzin struggling to find ways for the new airbenders to feel attachment to the ancient culture which in some ways is incongruent with the philosophy he's teaching; Tenzin tries to impart all the history and knowledge he's memorized to preserve his people, but it's Jinora that recontextualizes things and fosters them with exercises. This time Bumi's contribution is making things fun; he's able to explain to Tenzin the majesty he felt while flying that Tenzin may have even taken for granted. I think that would feel more natural for the characters, and letting Jinora be more of a mentor would make her role in the climax and ascension to master feel well-earned. Most of the new airbenders are from the Earth Kingdom because the plurality (or even majority) people are from the Earth Kingdom. It's like picking someone at random in our world and being surprised they are from China/India (1/3 of the population).
I lowkey disagree with Tenzin being mischaracterized about how harsh he is on the Airbenders. He has moments where he loses his temper from episode 1 on. Him getting frustrated that his imminent dream of rebuilding the Air Nation is delayed because of incompetence, even if it is unreasonably harsh at points, does fit what we've seen thus far.
It also plays back to him lashing out at everyone around him at the end of book 2 when he was unable to meditate into the Spirit World. He’s been shown to be quite sensitive when it comes to the topic of airbending and their culture, which could have been a result of his insecurities showing, being the one who had to carry all of it up to that point.
11:21 how someone is spiritually connected seems to be a big question in this season but honestly, i’m glad that they (for once) left such an important question ambiguous and unanswered
They really fumbled Bumi this season I gotta say. Imagine giving the non-bending character whose been insecure about his lack of bending ability his entire life everything that he’s always wanted and then doing nothing with it.
It would’ve been nice to see the conflict between the hard working side of him that wants to make the most of the gift he’s been given and his more goofy side.
In the context of the show itself, what made Jinora so spiritually special? It can't have been the fog, Tenzin actually broke out of it and remains spiritually inept the entire series And Pema has never been shown as anything special, non of the Air Acolytes are despite their training So is she just a mutant? How does that work?
I think it's worth mentioning how powerful a hyper focus is. Sure, Tensen knows people won't just step away from their lives. However, a powerful enough hyper focus easily makes us lose sight from reality. Given how important this is to Tensen, it's not a stretch at all to me that he could forget reality towards pushing towards his dream. I know I've been in similar positions myself.

I agree tenzen is wiser than that. Jinora being better than tenzen and can do anything ge could do is B's only thing she has is spirit projection and more spiritual. Doesn't deserve mastery
The training is what I remember most, as training arcs tend to be my favorite parts of shows, and I remember being happy to see more of it as season one had meditating and the gates and ... meditation via sleeping. I did like seeing more bison being fierce in the way that a real animal is.
I never really got how Jinora is supposed to be a master. She is probably the least competent of her siblings in a fight for most of the show and then she just inexplicably gets hella strong at the end of this season.
I quit my job Sunday. They fired my boss for some bullshit reason and I quit basically on the spot. These videos have been a constant source of comfort since I started working there 9 months ago so it just felt right to say it here. So if you’re in the Charlotte-Gastonia area in NC avoid Dominos. The district manager is a bitch that plays favorites.
Was there tho? I can honestly think of only 2 true filler episodes - The great divide and The painted lady. Every other episode moved the plot forward in some way
I think for Tenzin's mischaracterization in this episode there's an element that is probably about Bumi and his frustration with his brother. I think there's an argument to be made that it's less about him not realizing that his approach isn't working and more just being frustrated with his brother's ineptitude and that feeding into his frustration over his lack of success. It may be out of character but, hey, anyone can have a bad day.
13:08 I’ve never been bald but as a personal anecdote ever since I’ve grown my hair out long (used to always keep it very short as a guy) I think I feel less of the wind. Hair isn’t that sensitive and it kind of works like a pillow softening any force applied to your head through it.
2:16 I believe only Earth kingdom citizens got air bending because, earth and air are opposites. The two elements are way out of balance lots of earth-benders and few-air benders and harmonic convergence was to bring balance.
Unfortunately there isn’t really anything to back that up. I would have loved to see them find airbenders from the fire nation and water tribes! For the fire nation especially, it would have helped the narrative come full circle with the nation that caused the air nation to go extinct being a major component in bringing it back as well!
I understand where you're coming from with tenzin acting out of character, but I think there is a simple explanation. He's freaking out. We have a few moments in the show where we see how much of a weight being the airbending son of the last airbender was for tenzin. Like he said, seeing the rebirth of the air nomads would've been aang's dream, and likely tenzin's own dream due to the weight passed down by aang. So it doesn't really bother me to see tenzin freak out and making some dumb mistakes, because this is probably the biggest event of his life as an airbender and he is desperate to bring back the air nomads. Sure, deep down he knows this isn't the way, but his judgement gets clouded by stress and excitement. Which is a pretty realistic take on the character, presenting him as flawed rather than perfect. Which seems to be a running theme in tlok of making the characters very flawed, compared to atla where they were mostly perfect (obviously except zuko) and their flaws rarely lasted more than one episode (aang's guilt for running away, katara being angry at her dad, sokka being mysoginistic) or didn't really have any serious consequences, like aang closing his chakra which seems bad but since he doesn't need the avatar state in season 3 except during the finale it's never an issue. That's not to say korra's writing is better than atla's, simply different which can explain some of those moments like with tenzin
as someone who has, at one point, shaved himself bald, you absolutely can feel air currents better without hair. you can feel little changes surprisingly well
I feel like the tattoos don't carry the same weight they used to, nor should they.. and why shouldnt the only 3 airbenders in the world that have had actual years of practice with it be considered masters in the new airbender era?
On Boomy having a more effortless spiritual connection, I do think it makes SOME sense, especially with part of the idea being about "not getting so hung up on stuff, letting things go". Boomy is way more free spirited than Tenzin, because Tenzin is a dad and a leader and takes himself pretty seriously. This giving him a half-assed level of spiritual connection makes sense.
Perhaps there's a more commercial reason behind this episode, weren't some of them outsourced to met the deadlines? I remember it was filler, but this video makes it clearer that it doesn't fit much on the overarching story. Unless it was meant to justify the tattoos later

Your videos always make me happy. Thank you for posting ❤
song at 4:31 is Synthony - Infinity
Omg. The “bye son” joke got me really hard. 😂
I love how at every episode there's a "I'll bitch about this topic later" moment
the “bye son” really caught me out
I never really got how Jinora is supposed to be a master. She is probably the least competent of her siblings in a fight for most of the show and then she just inexplicably gets hella strong at the end of this season.
Being a master isn't just about fighting.
the baby bison in the cages is the saddest thing ive ever seen. theyre so cute
How did they go so wrong, I’ll never understand it
I quit my job Sunday. They fired my boss for some bullshit reason and I quit basically on the spot. These videos have been a constant source of comfort since I started working there 9 months ago so it just felt right to say it here. So if you’re in the Charlotte-Gastonia area in NC avoid Dominos. The district manager is a bitch that plays favorites.
say what you will about boomie I love the way his VA reads the line "I'm too old to be back in boot camp"
he just sounds so done
This is a filler episode but there was a lot of filler in the og series so it definitely felt nostalgic having an episode like this
Was there tho? I can honestly think of only 2 true filler episodes - The great divide and The painted lady. Every other episode moved the plot forward in some way
@@sunbleachedangel The Great Divide was the first time that Aang acted as the Avatar
@@pn2294Not enough people give Great Divide credit for that.
I just got subway. What perfect timing!
Imagine being in training and your instructor is NOT thinking about your progress towards leveling up.
Always love when there's a new overanalyzing vid, got something to do before going to bed
5:32
Then the comics are wrong
Aang walking around in the poles for 5 collective episodes without a shiver wasn't some animation goof
Yeah, show trumps the comics.
4:43 Bumi (the veteran): Well, if it isn't the consequences of my actions.
12:50 Also, THERE'S A BISON IN HER CAGE! Even if she didn't help at all, freeing her first doesn't delay the bison being freed by even a second.
13:08 I’ve never been bald but as a personal anecdote ever since I’ve grown my hair out long (used to always keep it very short as a guy) I think I feel less of the wind. Hair isn’t that sensitive and it kind of works like a pillow softening any force applied to your head through it.
1:55 Technically Aang can't really say anything, sinc he was deleted from the Rava Hardrive in season 2.
I love each and every silhouette reference throughout these series
2:16 I believe only Earth kingdom citizens got air bending because, earth and air are opposites. The two elements are way out of balance lots of earth-benders and few-air benders and harmonic convergence was to bring balance.
Unfortunately there isn’t really anything to back that up. I would have loved to see them find airbenders from the fire nation and water tribes! For the fire nation especially, it would have helped the narrative come full circle with the nation that caused the air nation to go extinct being a major component in bringing it back as well!
Nah, it’s just because the other Airbenders weren’t being persecuted
Also it's the biggest fucking kingdom by far
Bumi?
Could explain it, but theres nothing to support that idea.
13:10 No, I've shaved my head before. Can confirm you feel the wind WAY more when bald.
That's not to say korra's writing is better than atla's, simply different which can explain some of those moments like with tenzin
as someone who has, at one point, shaved himself bald, you absolutely can feel air currents better without hair. you can feel little changes surprisingly well
I appreciate your surgence of WheezyWaiter. I never see people refer to him. Except for MeekaKitty, though which I actually learned about Craig.
4:31 My ears have been blessed, holy shi- that was awesome.
13:08 I used to think that too, until I started balding. You start feeling every little air current once you lose enough hair.
I really enjoied that musical number
2:09 Wait. The AIRbenders chose to live in the places with LESS AIR!! How has nobody noticed this before? How have YOU not noticed this before??
There's less oxygen there, not air
Jinora getting her tattoos despite not earning them comes across as the writers trying to dethrone Aang as the "Youngest Air-bending Master."
I feel like the tattoos don't carry the same weight they used to, nor should they.. and why shouldnt the only 3 airbenders in the world that have had actual years of practice with it be considered masters in the new airbender era?
It feels like something they put on a checklist and didn't care that the season doesn't even give her enough focus for this to make sense
She is the most spiritual airbender of all, why wouldn't she be a master?
She deserved it
@@JojoJere but is she a master airbender? Like did she actually master airbending?
4:25 “is it just me or is Bumi kinda jacked?”
He’s a lifelong military man, of course he’s muscular lol. He only has a belly cuz he’s getting older.
1:40 this just might be your best work yet
13:09 No, as a matter of fact being bald does give you a frequently unpleasant sensitivity to air movement. Especially when it's cold.
Yes you are correct one of hairs many functions is to feel air currents its the main reason we still have body hair
1:12 genuinely laughed so hard
2:16 i think this gives more credibility to the theory that the people who got air bending are descendants of air benders
I like how Kai tried to justify his anger when Jinora and the baby bison were kidnapped. 🦬
gotta tell us about the sound screech from hell BEFORE it happens, thanks though.
The purpose of hair is to stop you from feeling wind on your head by stopping temperature movement.
Perhaps there's a more commercial reason behind this episode, weren't some of them outsourced to met the deadlines? I remember it was filler, but this video makes it clearer that it doesn't fit much on the overarching story. Unless it was meant to justify the tattoos later
i love these running gags
I would have so much fun hiking if I was an air bender! I even live near mountains!
Oh, and there goes the staff 😂
