- “Freedom is not a given and it needs constant care.” In the past year, NATO Allies have demonstrated their unity, solidarity and resolve to protect our citizens while facing the biggest security crisis in Europe since the Second World War, Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Our democracies, our values and the rules-based order have been challenged, and we have responded. We have carried out the biggest reinforcement of our collective defence since the Cold War by putting 40,000 troops under NATO command, doubled the number of battlegroups from four to eight, and we have taken important steps to strengthen our defence measures on land, in the air, at sea and in cyber space.
Keeping our citizens safe is our core task, and NATO leaders are meeting in Vilnius this July to discuss and take decisions on a variety of key issues, including further strengthening our deterrence and defence posture.

When Ukraine manages to restore its borders (Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk) and peace and finally joins NATO with Sweden, we will be even stronger. Ukraine alone is about to have one of the strongest military when they reconquer their land and restore their economical power.

My guy, Iran and China are kinda outside NATOs operation area. You know, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation? We need SEATO for China. South East Asia Treaty Organisation. That would be more of a reasonal Alliance against China. You could probably get India on board with that one aswell.

As much as I'd love for us to join, our govt needs to pull the finger out and spend at least the bare minimum on defence (i.e. have comfortably livable wages for the Defence Forces at the very least).
Otherwise we'd surely be NATO's weakest link if we do join.

But honestly, I hope Ireland, Swiss and Austria remain neutral, because it's really intelligent. As in, no one would attack a NATO area that can ultimately affect neutral ground aswell.

If you can see problems in your country, you hear about them on the news, and you can talk about them. Than your country is doing alright. If you're country is perfect in every which way, renew your passport and leave.

Unity, security, democracy
I'm from a non NATO country (Ireland). Nevertheless, it is vital for Europe and democracies around the world. And to think that the Posion Dwarf thought he could break it apart.
What are the current attitudes in the RoI on giving up military neutrality and eventually joining NATO? I'm thinking that if even the Finns can do it, then so can the Irish.

Ireland should not hide behind its friends, but rather join NATO and be a part of our common defense for democracy and freedom.
What dissappoints me is the virulent anit NATO stance of many established Irish politicians to the idea of joining NATO, this in spite of Finland and Norways recent decision to join after the Russian federations invasion of Ukraine.
Irelands neutrality is based on a distrust of Britain and a territorial dispute with Britain over Northern Ireland. Now that we are faced with the real possibility of attacks on vital sea cables and probes into Irish Airspace by Russian bombers it is probably time to rethink neutrality in the face of such aggression.
Irelands close diplomatic and cultural ties to the USA and our close economic affinity to NATO countries such as France and Germany and other European nations would seem to suggest a closer union with NATO objectives and aspirations.
In a realistic way the time is not yet right for any Irish Government to contemplate applying to join NATO. Our military and industrial resources are non existent in terms of being any practical use in a war involving NATO and some other power. The island would end up being bombed out existence or occupied without resistance costing NATO countries valuable resources in the defence of an island they could not afford to lose.
During the cold war Irish airports such as Shannon and Dublin were on the list of targets drawn up by the Soviet Union to be hit in the event of a nuclear war between the west and the Soviet Union, so neutrality is just an illusion in the harsh realities of a global war.
The Irish political establishment will probably have to wait for a while just as they had to wait for divorce and abortion legislation. Push too soon and you risk losing any hope of acceptance for a change.

As an Irish, it's a shame that we haven't joined NATO due to our inadequate army and reliance on Britain. But we are proud that NATO has always been a reliable partner. One day, Ireland's flag shall be hoisted in NATO's headquarter.
