  • Check out this sweet 90’s restoration of a Cannondale CAD 2 Mountain Bike. This build is a collaboration with a few of my subscribers, Damian Romero, and Matt Hardy who were generous enough to donate the frame and low-cost parts to make this bike come together. The frame gets a complete makeover for my brother-in-law who has never had a real mountain bike before. Special thanks to my channel partners @bikeflights and @marquecycling who’s continued support make restoration videos like this possible. The frame was shipped via bikeflights.com and the pedals and grips were donated by Marque cycling.

    The hardest part I have found about doing up old MTB's here in Aus is the lack of good forks(those old new stock Marzocchi's that CRC had would have been lovely)

    Excellent rebuild and love the new look. Also thanks for the tire recommendation, rebuilding a ‘93 Trek 930 Singletrack and think those tires will work well, the Tioga Psycho tires are just too dried out. You also have me wondering if shocks would be a solid upgrade from the rigid forks. Thanks man 🤘

    • @CoolBikeProjects
      @CoolBikeProjects  2 года назад

      Hi Mark, If you're talking about rebuilding one you will need some specialized tools that only older Cannondale dealers are going to have on hand. It's not impossible to work on them, just hard to find replacement parts. When they are running well they last for a long time, but eventually the boots fail, the springs can seize up, and the bearings need to be cleaned and regreased. I know of a good local mechanic here in SE Idaho that did a lot of maintenance on them if you are looking for some specific help.

    Just came across this video and feel like I finally have a jumping off point for my '98 F400. It was basic bike to begin with, but I'm just about ready to make an upgraded hybrid -- and still keep it 26" (however counterintuitive that is). Main questions are 1)What parts are still available from basic retailers vs. what should I really look to ebay for? 2) Can I strip it down to just the frame (and strip the frame for paint) and rebuild it with basic sockets/crescent wrenches/hex keys?

    • @CoolBikeProjects
      @CoolBikeProjects  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hmmm, lots of ways to approach this. I would suggest walking into a couple local bike shops and talk to their mechanics to see who has some experience working on older bikes. Most mechanics will understand you have a piece of nostalgia that you want to hold onto and should be able to steer you in the right direction with parts and what tools will be needed. Most bicycles form the 90s's have a mix of metric Allen bolts as well as a few specialized tools for bottom brackets, headsets, hubs etc. I would not be able to address all of these questions in the forum here, but a good local bike shop could. Best wishes!

    Having my old rockshox mag 21's rebuild by Risse racing up in Oregon for around $175 ,have the old 1 1/4" headset that the bb's in it are trashed and might have to locate a replacement for the Shimano XT-headset on it .anyone make a replacement for that or an improved version of it?

    Hey guys.. Can we spray clear coat over stickers ??

    • @CoolBikeProjects
      @CoolBikeProjects  2 года назад +1

      It a sense that’s what we just did. These are high-quality vinyl decals. If you spray over paper-based stickers it won’t work it’ll cause the ink to bleed. That’s why I showed the demo of me clear coating over the first set of decals to double check that everything was good.

    I've got pretty much the same frame (M400 CAD2), and I have to buy all the parts. I was thinking about modernizing it with a 27,5 front wheel and a suspension fork. Do you think it would be too much of a geometry change ?

    • @CoolBikeProjects
      @CoolBikeProjects  Год назад

      It really depends on the current heart tube angle. By the time you add a taller wheel and that much front height the geometry could be way too slack. I would talk to your local bike shop and get their thoughts before you start buying parts. Best wishes!

    • @sepultubob
      @sepultubob Год назад +1

      @@CoolBikeProjects Thanks a lot. It's an old school steep tubehead (70°). Does a 100mm suspension fork already increases the front height on such bikes ?

    • @CoolBikeProjects
      @CoolBikeProjects  Год назад

      @@sepultubob yes depending on the fork. Certainly newer 27.5 forks would add a lot more length.

    • @CoolBikeProjects

      Nope, pretty common to use vinyl decals as replacements. That is why we clear coated the frame, to smooth out the decals and protect the frame.
