It is great! Long format games like this one here play over the course of 5 days so it really boils down to strategy, planning and variation and mostly about lulling the batsman into a false sense of security and then surprising them into making a mistake. The other short format games are just a showcase of pure force and skill in scoring as much as possible in a short amount of time. Each has its nuance and is enjoyed in a different way.
T20 is shits and giggles cricket, ODI (50 over) is a bit more nuanced but with some rule changes in the last five years or so they are trying to make it more batter friendly. Test cricket is some real strategic shit. The bowlers can use 10 or more deliveries over the course of several overs to lay a trap for the batsman and then wham, bam, thank you ma'am; spring the trap and get the big wicket they were looking for. Then you have stuff like when a batsman is at 5 runs early in his innings and the fielder drops his ball. Said batsman goes on to score 100+ runs and wins the match for his side. Some of the most exciting moments are when the batting team has no chance in hell of catching the run total so they are just trying to survive until it gets dark on the last day. The bowlers are throwing everything they got at them trying to take them out. You see batsmen getting fucking drilled with balls to the forearm, chest, shoulders, etc. It's even more fun when you have two bowlers as batsmen and it's in their hands to just foul off balls for a couple of hours. For those unaware of the context of this series: the Australia v India test match series (called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy) is one of the biggest international test series on the cricketing calendar. Going to India and winning a series is very difficult, the last time Australia did it was in 2004 (with one of their greatest ever teams). This Australian team is the strongest in a while, yet India are also currently a strong test cricket team. Smith has always been an eccentric batsman, and does stuff like that often, but it can be excused as he’s one of the best test batsmen in the world. Jadeja is also a very good bowler and set him up perfectly to get him out.
No one cares about Australia-India in Australia. The Ashes is waaaay more important. Mainly because the English dont doctor the pitchers or cheat as much as Indian.
So glad you are bringing this sport to Americans who have never seen it. This is one of the many reason why Cricket is such a fascinating sport. The condition of the pitch, the length, the spin, and as you point out, the part of the ball that contacts the ground on the bounce...plus the 360 degree field, players catching scorching balls with their bare hands, at least half the team being bowlers and batsmen, the multitude of fielding positions...I gotta admit, I find this sport so much more interesting than baseball.
those are the reasons why YOU and WE love the game, but all those things you mentioned has no impact or context for Americans and not why they'd pick up this sport. You just said a whole lot of words. It'd be like me saying why someone should love NFL and gave them bunch of footballisms and formations. And no T20 is also not how you sell this game. Every new thing is about stories and at the moment cricket lacks it. Besides Kohli who is there to sell? In FIFA at least there was that Messi vs Ronaldo story. There's none in cricket at the moment. Back in the day it could've been McGrath, Lee, Shoaib vs Sachin, Lara, Pointing. Cricket doesn't have stories to tell anymore. /Rant.
@@TheTrippleTKA How about that Australia is one of the best test playing nations but always struggles against India in India. And this is a demonstration of why

Jimmy! Absolutely excellent breakdown from this Aussie former (very ordinary) cricketer who is mates with a lot of REAL players. You're right there is so much nuance in the game and the huge difference between T20, ODI and Tests makes them totally different games. Tests are the purest, strategic form of the sport. For someone who's a US sports expert with the extreme volume of work you've got on there, I'm impressed you even took time to watch this one, but top marks! I can see your love for great athleticism and sportsmanship. Part of the strategy in tests is the slow degradation of the pitch. It's prepared so it will dry out over time and change the way the ball bounces then spins or cuts, or swings in the air. In humid weather on a pitch with extra moisture, that favours the faster bowlers with more bounce and swing. One side of the ball only is shined up, then the swing bowler delivers it with the seam vertically so the air moves faster over one side than the other and the ball bends late toward the rougher side. We also have reverse swing which is more like baseball's curve. When the pitch is very dry and cracking up, that's better for the spin bowlers. Jadeja is a left handed orthodox, off or finger spinner, so it's turning the opposite way from a "normal" off-spinner. He flips the fingers over the seam almost in a clicking type action. The other type is a wrist or leg-spinner who flips their wrist to give even more turn on the ball the other way ... sort of like you would spin a top into motion. Even a tiny change at the point of releasing the ball can wildly change the amount of spin on the ball and the direction of that spin and amount of bounce off the pitch. It can come out of the back of the hand and spin the other way or as a top-spinner hurry onto the batsman. There are dozens of different types of delivery - even more than baseball because you have that extra element of the pitch and its condition. The batsman has to compensate for all those variables, and even though the speed is lower at 80mph or lower, the ball is delivered from 22 yards away and it might bounce only a couple of yards in front of the bat so the change has to be incredibly fast.
I think test cricket is like war. Lot of strategies goes in. You have to play session by session to win tests and the most interesting part of the test matches are pitches which changes day by day.
Thank you so so much for doing these videos. You are single handedly doing more than the ICC itself in terms of bringing the great game to a new audience. Great stuff!
In cricket I believe there’s a general mutual respect for the game and for other players: if you’re just that good they applaud you and your accomplishments
I'm absolutely loving these cricket breakdowns and it's especially nice to see Test Cricket being featured. For hard-core cricket fans this is the ultimate form of the game. Well, in my opinion anyway.
There's nothing like test cricket. When you get a gun bowler like Jasprit Bumrah in form facing off against any of the world's best batsmen every delivery is a must watch. His spell in the 2021 4th test on Day 5 against England at Lords may have been the best display of fast bowling since those devastating West Indies attacks.
That has to be one of the best breakdowns I've seen of variation spin dismissing a batsman in such a long time, and you're from the states! Even some aussie cricket nuts I know don't do it that much justice, every hat I own off to you and a round of applause, please keep an eye on this test series, it should turn out to be a ripper!

2:53 Smith IMMEDIATELY freezing to analyze his position is actually brilliant. Shows when someone knows and loves what they're doing. Something didn't work, and before getting caught up in the moment he checks his facts: where did I have the bat? How was I standing? What lanes were available for the ball? What'd I miss and how can I make up for it next time?
Even as an English person I can appreciate Steve Smith. He started his career as a very average batter and then turned himself into one of the greatest ever. Teammates say they can hear him shadow batting in his hotel room in the middle of the night before games and apparently he gets his wife to feed balls to him so he can bat at home. He’s a real win for all of us who are obsessive fans of any sport haha.
@@sergeantpickles4202 When he first joined, he was thought of as a spinner who could bat in the lower orders. Now, he is one of the best test batsmen of this era .
So basically, the wicket ball from Jadeja had way less revs on it, it’s what’s called an arm ball and will just go straight on. Brilliant from him, good to see him back!
With the USA and West Indies hosting the T20 World cup in June next year, Jomboy will have a field day! How do we get him hired on the commentary teams!?
He could always contact the ICC (the game's international governing body), the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India - arguably the single most influential national governing body), or ESPN. ESPN+ is carrying this Test Match (which is in its third day as of today, with India building a sizable lead in the first innings) through their colleagues at Disney+ Hotstar. The online cricket community has noticed Jomboy, and it honestly wouldn't surprise me at all if he turns up in some official capacity for the tournament's broadcast content.
I know they say it's 50mph, but it's honestly not slow at all. The fact it bounces and then spins/doesn't spin adds so much complexity to dealing with it, you basically have to rely completely on muscle memory. So much respect for these players, even if they look silly when they miss.
50 mph in baseball and cricket is different due to trajectory and bounce variations . 50 mph sounds like shit in baseball (those are full toss (without bounce) Same way in cricket , a ball that goes without bounce considered as shit ,you can hit it anywhere .

Such a great breakdown! As a fellow left arm spinner I genuinely love watching Jadeja bowl. His ability to push the straight one or “arm ball” comes entirely from his wrist position and sliding it through slightly faster. With a straight firm wrist, he can push it on where it doesn’t spin the other way. With a bent wrist, he gets the normal tradition spin on the ball for a lefty (bouncing and going offside)
Jadeja is one of the finest and most discipline bowler of this generation. Never gives a loose ball. Always bang on line and length. Greatest fielder of this gen. And when it your turn batting and half the team is in Pavillion he will dog the opposing team around just breaking them, shattering their hopes of having some chance in game. All hail sir jadeja
But i think sometimes he also doesn't know if the ball will spin or not ...he just grips and throws .....if lucky it stays straight and hit and if not he misses .... nothing against him obviously according to records he is one of the goats but is there any ott skill?
@@pqrstwxyz1175 yeah you can say that but the ball that turned was slightly flighted but the later one was not. We can see what he was trying to do. He tricked Smith I would say. It happened twice in the match too.
Awesome! Bowling in cricket is fascinating, but Steve Smith is also a great watch. If you can, check out his back-to-back 100s in the BBL. He was on another plane from everyone else.
I was in the audience for this match and let me tell you that everyone in the stadium was disappointed that the match was over in three days. Each ticket allowed access for all five days of the match and people had attended from different cities to come watch it (including me). This just shows the love people have for this sport, that they watched the same match for around 20 hours but were sad that it was over too early!
Line and length from these bowlers was spot on. Beautiful first two balls, outside leg, inside swing, no spin just curved around and took out the stumps. There is some text book bowling in this one 👍
Thanks for your video. I grew up on a steady diet of North American sports, including baseball. I began following T20 when I moved to the Southern Hemisphere. It wasn't long until the time when I began watching Test matches which I really enjoy for the strategy and the up-and-down cycles: T20 led me to Tests. As the great Shane (Warney) Warne once said: "a Test match across days is always won by the best team." There's a reason why the pitches tend to be "spicier" on the Asian subcontinent, and it always teaches us that speed/pace isn't always king (but helpful). It's remarkable how the quality of pitch, the amount of moisture, the amount of grass all contribute to improving wicket-taking chances from spin-bowling. And that also speaks to a major component of the game: what does the pitch offer to the ball that's been bowled (aside from baseball-like full tosses)?
T20, football and any other 3 hour game doesn't have the tussle, mind game, and chances to make a comeback after u fuck up. A non cricket person will never understand how fan these 5 days can be But man if u know cricket,it's delight.
As a "non traditional" fan of cricket (more of a Canadian hockey Dad) kinda fan of all kinds of sports. I love the team shout of "HOWWZZZAAATTTT!" when a team takes a wicket.
canadian here, I am hooked on cricket becasue of you jomboy, watched this game yesterday and today. India so dominant. but the games end after 5 days. if a team still has batsman then the game ends in a draw.
It can end anywhere between 2 to 5 days and if it's going for 5 days it's either boring at one point or it will super freaking entertaining there will be no middle ground
I used to bowl leg-spin as a kid, and although this is in NZ, our home ground was incredibly dry and dusty, with a low slow pitch. I still remember one game where the pitch was just so dusty, and I was pitching it outside leg and turning it square (I usually wasn't a massive turner of the ball, because I wasn't that good). It was just the best feeling. Except that unfortunately my wicket-keeper couldn't deal with it any better than the batsman, and the outfield was lightning fast... four byes :( Then they went in and installed an artificial pitch, and not one of the simple old matting-on-concrete ones (which suit wrist-spin okay -- tennis ball bounce makes top-spin very effective, and wrist-spin naturally generates top-spin and bounce). No, it was a fancy one with proper texture that made the ball skid. Fine for a finger-spinner who can fire it in and make use of the skiddy nature to bowl defensively, but as a wrist spinner I just had nothing in my toolbox and was useless on it.
A Test Cricket breakdown! It's the purest, most beautiful form of the sport, ultimate cat and mouse game for 5 days 😁 and with awesome players like Steve Smith and Ravindra Jadeja, this is going to be a cracking series. Well done for covering this, Jomboy. And you're spot on about why spin is so difficult to anticipate and hit against
It's crazy, the one on the right was spinning faster but the one on the left was teetering off axis, crazy the left of ball control in cricket, in baseball, when they try high and inside after 5 pitches they hit by pitch Edit: Wrote this before Jimmy analysed it, glad he saw what I was talking about
no it's ground doing work for you , it's called pitch( cricket term ) , every cricket has make different ground surface that suits their players , indian sub continent known for spinners , Australia, England known for fast bowlers !
it's the thing you can't pick , smith played wrong line ! on turning pitch( cricket term ) , the ball that don't turn is lethal , cause turn is in your head from previous balls you faced also turning ball can take outside edge of bat and go fielder behind batter
, that test is most difficult and original format cricket in T20 cricket pitches( surfaces don't create variations from same spot ) , so batters starts hitting bowlers like hell
Come on, dude... Smith paid an enormous toll for that debacle. Has anyone else ever paid a such a high price for doing something which has been a dirty secret in cricket for more than 30 years...? Other nations have given zero fucks and let their cheating players off with a slap on the wrist. The Australian cricket board suspended Smith for 12 months... Stripped him of the captaincy.. He was deserted by all his sponsors... Upwards of $10 million in lost earnings... People took a lot of glee in bashing him, but I don't think the punishment fit the crime. He was a relatively young, inexperienced Australian captain who was led astray by one or two of the more senior players in the team... I don't think he was the instigator of it, but as captain he bore the brunt of responsibility. The thing is, every cricket fan knows damn well that ball-tampering is widespread and that it has been for decades. So why is Smith pointed at as the arch-villain when everyone else has been using the same dodgy tactics all these years?
They are. Good question. Only problem is the entire pitch is like a minefield. It wouldn't matter. Other pitches around the world (especially in AUS) really fo benefit from what you said. Indian pitches are just so tough to play on
They can and do do what you are describing, but a lot of the turn is coming from the spinning of the ball and not random deviations in the pitch (playing surface). Uneven bounce can also come from factors beneath the surface of the pitch so there's nothing you can do about it.
Also, the matches go on for hours, and as the day progresses, the character of the surface can change. Just think about how at the start of the day, maybe the ground is still a bit damp from the morning dew, or an overnight rainfall, and as the day progresses, it hardens up and dries out a bit. Then add that in a test match, the play extends over a few days. So the conditions of the pitch on day 1 may be different from day 2, even if you move to the next pitch over.
As someone from the UK who knew nothing about the nuances of baseball until I started watching your breakdowns, as soon as you started with cricket I couldn't wait to see you get into the minutiae of spin bowling. It's *fascinating* stuff isn't it? So glad you're enjoying it.

A lot, ok most, of the time test cricket is boring af for everyone but us real diehards. But at the same time it is can be fascinating. These cats can play for five days / six hours per day and the entire match can turn on its head with one really good delivery from the bowler. The last time India and Australia faced off two years ago in Australia the entire four match series went down to the last ten minutes. Absolute pins and needles stuff for a good portion of that series knowing one mistake could do you in.
The ball on the left has more flight landing on the ground at a steeper angle, on the right it’s delivered flatter hence skidding on to go straight without much turn.
Very well analysed sir. Hats off. The ball wasn't even a googly/ wrong 'un. But still kinda acted like one. As an Indian I would give the Aussies a pass for the first game. Since they last played in India in 2017. Indian pitches have less bounce and a lot of turn so let's not judge them until the next match.

/Rant.

@@abinashsamal1 Agreed. It's a series of battles over time. Good analogy.
Thank you so so much for doing these videos. You are single handedly doing more than the ICC itself in terms of bringing the great game to a new audience. Great stuff!

In cricket I believe there’s a general mutual respect for the game and for other players: if you’re just that good they applaud you and your accomplishments
@Cricket Explained Yeah I can imagine, I've heard some of that banter but there's a bigger culture of respect I feel like if I'm not mistaken?
Its so brilliant that you're doing these breakdowns. Test cricket is such nuanced sport and is so under appreciated!!
I'm absolutely loving these cricket breakdowns and it's especially nice to see Test Cricket being featured. For hard-core cricket fans this is the ultimate form of the game. Well, in my opinion anyway.
It's true. Period.
@@fudgenuggets405 remember Johnson ashes 13-14
@@bageok2494 That’s a great reminder. Johnson showed up pissed off and bowled with pure hate for the entire series. Serious hostile fast bowling.

As an Indian American growing up playing baseball but watching cricket with my dad, I love that you're bringing the sport to the American audience. when people say test cricket is just a 5 day game, they don't see the intricacies of the game, and how much it's like chess. Glad that you are starting to enjoy the game, and hopefully the ICC, and BCCI in particular see the value and don't take down your cricket videos.
Why would BCCI or even ICC take this video down brother?
@@boxoftin BCCI especially are very strict on their broadcast rights in terms of highlights and other India Cricket content. that's why it's so hard to find indian cricket highlights that aren't bootlegged on youtube. compare that england or australia cricket, they provide high quality highlights on their own pages
Also, it's a maximum of 5 days. Most test matches in last few years are finishing within 2-4 days.
Good analogy. Test cricket indeed has aspects like classical chess. Having mental fortitude over a long duration separates the best from the rest.
@@avyas920 BCCI sells the authority to use highlights with india in it to other boards and it also depends on which company have bought broadcasting rights like at 6 billion dollars reliance have bought IPL rights so they might post highlights in RUclips.

And also check the video of Smith and warner who are arguably the nest sandpaper rubber.

You are the first American I've seen who I can actually stand to listen, while talking about cricket... hope you can spread the culture a little more
thanks for doing cricket breakdowns bro not alot of people understand how cool and fun of a sport cricket is and im glad youre finally giving it some recognition. The next t20 world cup is gonna be played in the US and I hope by then theres a bigger following here in the states.
He wasn't even playing that bad, the rest of his team mates couldn't stay with him and got out.
The man is really a dedicated player.
And then gets bowled the same way by the same bowler in next innings
I agree. A ball that spins becomes invisible literally after it hits the ground.
honestly they miss all the time..even top players. Its not uncommon to not score a run for 20-30 balls even for top batters in test cricket.
50 mph in baseball and cricket is different due to trajectory and bounce variations .
50 mph sounds like shit in baseball (those are full toss (without bounce)
Same way in cricket , a ball that goes without bounce considered as shit ,you can hit it anywhere .
Steve Smith is a natural treasure. He's such a goofball :D
As an Indian I agree. He is one of my favorites.
t20 is about skill and luck and power hitting, Test Cricket is more a reflection about the entire cricketing system of the countries playing
Brit here, loved and played baseball most of my life. Test match cricket and baseball are the two best sports in the world, and share many similarities. One off-the-field element that contributes to my love of both sports is how amazing they are on the radio. They have produced all time greats like Vin Scully and Richie Benaud. I'm lucky enough to be a Giants fan so get to listen to Jon Miller and Dave Fleming every day in the summer. Sprinkle in some David Lloyd, and Henry Blofeld talking about pigeons... Magic! Batting against India's bowlers has got to be crazy. Spin, spin, spin, then here comes Jasprit Bumrah to blow it right past you with a perfect yorker
I think he's better than even Ashwin these days
But i think sometimes he also doesn't know if the ball will spin or not ...he just grips and throws .....if lucky it stays straight and hit and if not he misses .... nothing against him obviously according to records he is one of the goats but is there any ott skill?

For an American… that was some REALLY good commentary. I mean the pitch stuff was gold. Well done man.

T20, football and any other 3 hour game doesn't have the tussle, mind game, and chances to make a comeback after u fuck up.

canadian here, I am hooked on cricket becasue of you jomboy, watched this game yesterday and today.
Except that unfortunately my wicket-keeper couldn't deal with it any better than the batsman, and the outfield was lightning fast... four byes :(
Then they went in and installed an artificial pitch, and not one of the simple old matting-on-concrete ones (which suit wrist-spin okay -- tennis ball bounce makes top-spin very effective, and wrist-spin naturally generates top-spin and bounce). No, it was a fancy one with proper texture that made the ball skid. Fine for a finger-spinner who can fire it in and make use of the skiddy nature to bowl defensively, but as a wrist spinner I just had nothing in my toolbox and was useless on it.
never planned on watching anything cricket related, anyone else?

This was a pretty awesome video, keep up the good work ❤
Are batters allowed to tamp down the ground in front of where they're batting to maybe force the bounces to be more predictable?
Yes.
@@patrickobrian9669 hehe do do.
