How to make money with photography | The 7Ps method via In-Person Sales (IPS).

  • The original cut of this video was over an hour long so I've stripped it back and included the absolute essential elements of how to make money with photography, specifically portrait photography. This could be sessions of dog photography, family photography, newborn photography or any other session that is considered a "portrait". This video goes through a well-known marketing model, the 7Ps, and frames the Ps into In-Person Sales (IPS), the most profitable way to run your photography sessions. (This video features the starter/budget option for IPS - there are 3-4 different "levels" of investment here, so if you can go big, go big!)

    Thanks again Jess. I have contacted SWPP for extra info. I have also contacted digitalab I'd used DSCL previously so I can compare products. We are under extra lockdown restrictions in Lancs (North in general tbh) so not sure what to do probably build on ideas over this year like a new web site and samples etc. I had no clue about how this ips would work but it's really useful seeing the foam board idea and all the other info. Anyway, thanks again enjoyed it and really useful.

I always look forwards to what you have to say.

    Went through the full video, it is very insightful. Whilst I have portfolio boxes, etc, I'm definitely going to look into the foam boards, it is a very smart idea that gives clients an idea of size. I'm guessing you have a set of prices there marked down for each size, another thing I'll have to sit down and work out. Thanks for the great video.

    You're amazing, Jess! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge :) I've got one question, if I may.
    How many photos the client gets on usb? Is there any minimum or maximum she/he can choose from the digital gallery? And what about the product: does every customer get at least one framed image from the session?
    I'm still learning, but for me, that kind of photography is an art, and I wouldn't offer too many photos due to their nature and value. And I believe, they should be offered in a special way ;)
    I would be grateful for your reply.
    Wish you all the best!

    This is such a helpful video!! Quick question, when you said about USB delivery to clients is this something that you would do as part of each package, so they are included in the packages, meaning overall the price they have paid includes the USB of all the pictures and they therefore do not have a gallery online? I hope that makes sense.

      They come to me now but I've done both in the past. To be honest I actually kind of prefer going to them! If they come to you that's where your space and the wall art hanging needs to be amazing - it helps to sell more and sell bigger. But going to the client is absolutely fine and it's something a lot of my business students do regularly 😊

    • @Aussiecakes
      @Aussiecakes 3 года назад +1

      Never show unedited photos they are a representation of your work. Just limit how many photos your showing.

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  3 года назад +4

      Within the IPS itself, you take the client through the final gallery, which is edited. There should be no more than 20 images per subject in most cases (portrait sessions). You then use your flags or stars in Lightroom Classic or selection tools in the more expensive software sets, such as ProSelect, to cut down the image to the clients favourites. Then you put the images into products/collections. Always images first, products second 👌

      Hi Jess! I heard in some of the full edit videos, i think, that you would stop here unless you know, the clients picks it. I was wondering what your workflow suggestions are? Cool stuff, I found labs in germany, that do those shadow frame products...

  • @superbrokul

    Another great video! I wonder how you get clients who actually want a portrait of their pet hanging on the wall. I feel like it's a cultural thing in the UK and US. None of my clients are interested in that :/ I tried IPS but I honestly think it does't work in Spain :(

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  3 года назад

      Good question and if that isn't what your customers want that is totally fine!
      You just need to identify what there is a market for and create content suited to that 🥰

    I've been looking at using Digitalab but I find that when you come to upload images onto your chosen frame, etc, it doesn't show you what the end product will look like? whereas other companies will show you a visual of how it will look beforehand. It just shows the chosen image inside the cropped area, with no frame, etc. Am I doing something wrong?

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  3 года назад

      No, this is where having your samples complete those visual gaps. The frames and gaps around the edge are the same for each size so really you are just uploading the image and that's it. I find I don't need a preview at all, but then I guess I'm used to labs without that maybe?!

    @ThatDogSpot I'd like to book 1 hour session business one-to-ones but instead of In-Person Sales I aim to sell high price but one time (one price) not selling anything after. Please, advice would the business one-to-ones session work with this approach?

    • @ThatPhotographySpot

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  3 года назад +2

      I'm glad it was helpful! It will really make no difference seeing my list because my price list is set up for the sessions I do now which aren't "normal", so there'll be way less images to choose from than normal and therefore the collections aren't particularly good references to look at! I will be showing all of my documents (inc the list) in the workshop, because I can explain what to do differently at the same time. Just putting my price list onto this video won't help any portrait photographer without a mega disclaimer and a full list of what not to do. It would be too confusing 😊

      @@ThatPhotographySpot thanks for your answer! I just wanted to see the structure of it, because I was a little bit confused (I'm from Germany and my English is not the best :D). But I understand that it might be confusing :)

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  3 года назад +2

      @@mim7176 That's ok! On the left-hand side, you need your packages - groups of products - and on the right-hand side, you need your individual items that are not bundled together into collections. On both sides, the order of the items should go from most expensive to least expensive. You should have no less than 3 packages and the same item in a package should be more expensive when purchased on its own. This makes the packages look cheaper, but really the individual items have money added to them, not the other way around.
      Does that help at all?

    The spoken content is great, but your visuals are confusing. When you want to show text on a card, it should be a static shot with the card on an easel. And those moving tight shots of the frames left me wondering exactly how they should look. A well-lit medium shot of each frame would have been helpful.
