He should have also returned the car, not paid for it. As one of the owners he can give up his share at any time. He also should have defaulted all bills that weren't in his name. Once he has paper trail and testimonials that she left and abandoned her life he can stability abandonment with ease. Also the "no judge would sign on selling shared assets" is bad lawyer advice. People do this all the time, it's called "in absentia", and in family court is pretty easy to do.
