PhilthyCo RC already did! Still pretty laggy, though. I swapped them with proper Spektrum or Futaba rx’s. The other “spektrum” gear I have them on 2 crawlers
The problem is new people want "cheap rcs" and so the manufacturers have to cut corners somewhere. Obviously those of us that have been in the hobby a while know better but I read things all the time from beginners asking what's the best for the cheapest, while there are some good things out there for what we consider cheap, for the most part they have to figure out you get what you pay for. The sad thing is that the cheap stuff is what keeps a lot of new people from really getting into the hobby because of how bad it is, it sucks when you've been out running 5-10 minutes on your first or second day out and you break something. When I got into the hobby I just listened to someone who'd been in the hobby a while and was much happier than if I'd tried on my own. Most of my stuff has been used when I got it too, that's what has really helped me stay in the hobby.
rodpolice You kno dude, not everyone is having a bad experience with the stx2 radio. Some people have yes, and that’s okay. But I really think the problem is people are expecting way too much out of a ready to run radio that’s only meant to get you going. Do you expect them all to include a 200 dollar radio? I sure as hell don’t. And I have 2 STX2 radios and both work flawlessly so far. If you don’t like the radio replace it and move on, quit bitching about it.
Thinking of a first time rc car for my son ...this one or the Rustler xl-5 (?) ..which is faster /easier to drive/ etc in your opinion...thanks in advance
Based off my opinion, because I own both of these, the rustler is a fun truck and is a lot easier to work on and get parts for when it does break, the typhoon does have it pros though to considering it is 4 wheel drive making it a lot more capable Offroad and even on road, overall I would recommend the typhoon but it is a little bit more difficult to find parts for as it also has not been out as long as the rustler
@@livinoffroad awesome thanks for the reply ...I was leaning for the rustler I think anyway. .. also in your opinion lol...xl-5 or vxl (?) ...does the xl-5 really go 35 mph ?..all the videos I've seen they only go 23-25 mph -_-
to me, the name "Typhon" was always associated with power and speed and strength and everything good you want a buggy to be.. i have a Typhon 6s v4. i absolutely love it. by far the best rc ive ever owned. other people may feel differently, but the Name TYPHON demands respect imo.. i was irritated that theres a 3s version. and even more super irritated that theres a brushed version. i feel like theyre using the name typhon to sell cheap rc's. Thats how i always felt about it.. But after watching this video ive changed my mind.. its cheaper, yes.. and its a slower brushed plastic version of the powerhouse we all know and love, but its still Arrma. they still put time and effort into it and made a good buggy.. and i would absolutely see myself buying this for my son.. I wanted to get him something 8th scale for a while but never did because thats a lot of power for someone whos only been in the hobby for a year or two and a 14th scale rc is the biggest hobby grade car he has.. thats an enormous upgrade from a cheap 14th scale to a massive 8th scale typhon 6s... But this thing right here i feel like is the PERFECT middle point between the two. i can absolutely see him (and many many other kids in similar situations) having a blast with this thing.. It appears to be a great car to learn the 8th scale platform with.. I think you may have just convinced me to grab one of these.. awesome vid man.
So far so good. My boys have been driving it mostly and they've beat the buggy up pretty good. It's not as fast as the 3S so there is a little less stress on the servo. Our only problem (after the video was made) is I didn't clean it after the last run through the puddles and now a few bearings are grinding. Time for a full tear down and cleaning.
KOOOOOOL THANKS FOR THE ANSWER. ALSO WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE REDCAT RACING CAMO ROCK RACER I HEARD ITS GREAT. HAS A 15g metal gear servo. I saw it take a beating on a video and nothing broke on it.
Dustin Woolsey upgrading servo is not hard to do. I guess metal gears is always better. BUT THE SERVO WITH THIS BRUSHED TYPHON. IT SAYS IT CAN TAKE A BEATING STOCK. I DON T KNOW HARD TO PASS THIS BRUSHED TYPHON UP. IM NOT THAT REALLY INTO BRUSHLESS.
I have a question about my Arrma Typhon 3S I received yesterday from Amazon, the front wheels had had so much excessive movement I thought the factory didn't tighten them but they tight. I measure over a 1/4" of play as I was holding the steering still. I must have been the bearings or bearing hub, I have 3 other Arrma vehicles and none of them have slop like this and their used. Any ideas ? I just packed back up and going to exchange it out as it made no sense to try to find and fix a new $400.71 when it's brand new. It would been impossible to trim with any bump in the road making it change direction. I seen a fee videos lately where Arrma's QC hasn't been the best. It's smart to go over and the tightest of bolts and nuts. But now it'd smart to locate axle stub screws, check your slipper clutch setting, your gear mesh and diff fluids. That's a lot of work for a RTR car/ truck to avoid problems. I just wanted to if you ever come across the problem of excessive wheel play out of the box ?
I am looking to get into the hobby, but it appears that 1/10th scale is what is most popular around me in terms of racing. Is there a comparable 1/10th model that is entry-level, but still upgradeable over time and easy to work on like this one? Many thanks.
@@philthyco1 I was talking scale period, not racing cause I dont believe typhon is a race buggy by any stretch lol so I guess if you want to get all technical and feel you won then yay you
To answer my own question, yes you can drop in a brushless system. I put a 3650 3200kv hobbywing system in it, just the motor and esc, I changed nothing else, and it’s actually pretty quick. I would suggest for people wanting to get this but in the fence for the blx version, if you want to get to know your rc buy this one. You can get all the 3s blx parts and upgrade when things break. That’s what I’m going to do. This is a great buggy!
Fonic Gaming don’t bother asking him anything in the future he never answers unless maybe he gets a compliment or he knows you . Either way I’ll still watch and subscribe but don’t expect a return . Worse then getting the President!
Looks great. I'm torn between the typhon and the granite. Do you think the granite would roll over a lot? Which is faster? I like the looks of the monster truck but I hate roll overs.
@@philthyco1 I don't have this specific chassis but Ive owned dozens of rcs and I know they are all built to handle (most times barely) the power they are delivered with. Overbuilding would increase the price and push into their other lines. I'd love to see a mamba monster running 4s on this. Maybe I'm wrong but years of experience tells me that there's a lot of plastic in this drivetrain that is built to handle the torque of a very modest brushed motor and more than doubling that torque is going to be an issue.

I got the mega Senton for my son. The speed/durability are great for kids...but sadly, a 12t 550 just isn't up to moving this size/weight of truck. The stock motor lasted 4 battery packs. The motor burnt up bad. I put in a traxxas titan 12t, with a heat sink and a fan...it will still start to smell if you run more than one pack back to back...and that is on a 65 degree day, on very short grass and pavement. There is absolutely no way these could ever do 30mph, when the motors burn up doing 20mph. Once the titan 12t gives up, I will have to put a mild brushless setup in it.
I'm in pretty much the same situation as you. Burned up the stock 550 on the third lipo pack. I just ordered a Titan, heatsink, & fan...but I have a funny feeling that setup won't last too long either. 550s are severely underpowered for these vehicles.
@Captain_Dirt that's a great idea... but I would like to reuse my 6s esc and 2650 truly motor this way but the cheaper one and implant what I have....all no cost to me for upgrade and can run 6s ....how is that mud muncher....

I have a question. What is the average top speed of rock crawlers under $200? Are offroaders (trophy trucks or rock crawlers) under $200 even worth it? Thanks
Depends really on the model, I've seen like 10 - 25 km/h out of most scale looking crawlers or trail crawlers / trail runners with standard brushed motors & rock racers. They can be sped up or slowed down via gearing or changing the esc & motor too a lower turn motor or a higher turn motor, or sensored brushless system if you can its worth sticking another 50 into your budget so you can get something that is better out of the box or buy some better equipment for said rc car or truck. like a proper lipo, new esc & charger like in the video further below on the HB toys trail runner. Also depends on what you are looking at when it comes too the trophy trucks/short course trucks. 1:18th scale one like the wltoys a969 & 969b is pretty quick out of the box & is great value for the money below 100 usd you can't go wrong really, maybe change too some thicker shock oil all around & buy the 540 motor capable esc & a better 2s lipo & just run it as it is otherwise. Quite punishing bashing video here, this truck is protected well from its bumper & body so it can take quite the abuse. ruclips.net/video/nEz_EoDrw6E/видео.html Something like this hb toys with a larger 2s lipo would be a pretty decent beginner car for crawling as well, but it would ofc not keep up with something like a traxxas trx4 depending on the terrain, but its a good starter for the money if you look at the video reviews of them. www.banggood.com/HB-Toys-ZP1001-110-2_4G-4WD-Rc-Car-Proportional-Control-Retro-Vehicle-w-LED-Light-RTR-Model-p-1448623.html?rmmds=category&ID=41195&cur_warehouse=CN & with some mods you can make it do this which is pretty cool for under 250 usd if you skip the sound kit. ruclips.net/video/JJkU8koosbU/видео.html There are also rock racers like this that does depending on the battery between 20 - 45 km/h depending on the gear ratio & batteries used in testing, they usually have regular shocks instead of oil filled ones so it will be a bit bouncy when it comes too handling. www.banggood.com/Feiyue-FY03H-112-2_4G-4WD-Brushless-Rc-Car-Metal-Body-Shell-Desert-Off-road-Truck-RTR-Toy-p-1376223.html?rmmds=search Tomley rc garage also has a review on this which is another fairly slow but good crawler for the size for a forest trail or backyard running. www.banggood.com/MN-99-2_4G-112-4WD-RTR-Crawler-RC-Car-Off-Road-Buggy-For-Land-Rover-Vehicle-Model-p-1471939.html?rmmds=search&ID=233&cur_warehouse=CN

@@philthyco1 It would cost over $150 extra to turn this into a 3s blx and that's a low estimate. Retail prices would be over $200. You would most likely need both. Spend money on the esc first. You wouldnt want the "controller" to be inferior to what its controlling. No one has the stats on the mega esc but some forums people speculate it around 35w though none is sure what it really is.
@@sylvainster30 Be aware that a blx esc and motor alone is probably going to cost at least $100. Add all the other blx upgrades and you're looking at quite an investment. Also if you want slow, the 3s version can do that too if it comes with the same transmitter as this.

Hey bud... a little late to the party. I'm 45, been out of the hobby for at least 25 years. Just got back in with my 9 year old boy... I did a pile of reading and research. We ended up with this same rig. I have to tell ya, this thing is rad. Affordable, but easily modified until your heart's content. Even out of the box, this thing rips. We got a handful of 2S batteries which really woke the rig up, and the next move will be brushless. For me, the journey was part of it. Do you expect them all to include a 200 dollar radio? I sure as hell don’t. And I have 2 STX2 radios and both work flawlessly so far. If you don’t like the radio replace it and move on, quit bitching about it.
Looks like a great handling entry level RC.
Yeah, you can pretty much drive this full throttle over jumps and it takes off and lands perfectly. So easy to drive.

Captain_Dirt are you serious? Calm down dude.
to me, the name "Typhon" was always associated with power and speed and strength and everything good you want a buggy to be.. i have a Typhon 6s v4. i absolutely love it. by far the best rc ive ever owned. other people may feel differently, but the Name TYPHON demands respect imo.. i was irritated that theres a 3s version. and even more super irritated that theres a brushed version. i feel like theyre using the name typhon to sell cheap rc's.
Joshua Stagnitto The 3s is a great car but the brushed is just pathetic

Not a bad buggy at all! I’d like to see you convert a slash to buggy and then compare it to the typhon!

So how is the servo on it. It's not metal. That's what is holding back from wanting one.
You're going to end up replacing the servo on just abojt any rtr eventually so I wouldn't worry about it. Now that crap tx......
Can be easily upgraded
Mines the same brand new just carried on with it
I am looking to get into the hobby, but it appears that 1/10th scale is what is most popular around me in terms of racing. Is there a comparable 1/10th model that is entry-level, but still upgradeable over time and easy to work on like this one? Many thanks.
This the same size as any 10 scale but buggies are scaled different so it's called 1/8 scale

Hi RC Driver! Can it run on 3s LiPo batteries? Thank you!
I have that but converted to 4s brushless and got 60+mph
Hey Greg, could you just drop in a mild brushless system in that buggy? Does it have the same motor mount as the 3s line?
The Typhon will have more performance handling. The Granite will handle rougher terrains.
how do you think the 9t 570 mega motor would do in this car or the mega 550 granite truck? any difference of benefit running nimh?
Smooth Acceleration!
I am curious if you can run a 7cell flat nimh in that battery tray, or does it have to be the hump pack?
You can make a flat fit, but a hump pack fits much better.
Looks like your boys had a blast with this buggy! I actually prefer this body over the 3s BLX version. 👍🏻👍🏻
They did! The green is pretty cool, but the camera blows out the green color. It looks so much better in person.
So I have a mamba monster from my emax would that be an easy swap to.bumb this up
I get the feeling you're going to be blowing the drivetrain up unless you do some serious upgrades.
Going to get one was thinking about getting back into driving battery cars again I had a hpi blitz I have got a king motor 30.5 cc now and there fun to drive but I want a second car to run
Another great video. Would you mind sharing the location of this track? I live in the area (could tell by Ring's End logo) and that place looks like fun. Thanks.
How do I know what kind of battery would work with this rc ? I want to purchase a second battery to extend play time
It looks to be a absolute blast ...brushless upgrade would be the first thing done...great video..
@Captain_Dirt that's a great idea... but I would like to reuse my 6s esc and 2650 truly motor this way but the cheaper one and implant what I have....all no cost to me for upgrade and can run 6s ....how is that mud muncher....

What's the car on the wall with the red wheels and multi colored body?
I have a question. What is the average top speed of rock crawlers under $200? Are offroaders (trophy trucks or rock crawlers) under $200 even worth it? Thanks
Depends really on the model, I've seen like 10 - 25 km/h out of most scale looking crawlers or trail crawlers / trail runners with standard brushed motors & rock racers.
They can be sped up or slowed down via gearing or changing the esc & motor too a lower turn motor or a higher turn motor, or sensored brushless system
if you can its worth sticking another 50 into your budget so you can get something that is better out of the box or buy some better equipment for said rc car or truck. like a proper lipo, new esc & charger like in the video further below on the HB toys trail runner.
Quite punishing bashing video here, this truck is protected well from its bumper & body so it can take quite the abuse.
ruclips.net/video/nEz_EoDrw6E/видео.html
Something like this hb toys with a larger 2s lipo would be a pretty decent beginner car for crawling as well, but it would ofc not keep up with something like a traxxas trx4 depending on the terrain, but its a good starter for the money if you look at the video reviews of them.
www.banggood.com/HB-Toys-ZP1001-110-2_4G-4WD-Rc-Car-Proportional-Control-Retro-Vehicle-w-LED-Light-RTR-Model-p-1448623.html?rmmds=category&ID=41195&cur_warehouse=CN
& with some mods you can make it do this which is pretty cool for under 250 usd if you skip the sound kit.
ruclips.net/video/JJkU8koosbU/видео.html
There are also rock racers like this that does depending on the battery between 20 - 45 km/h depending on the gear ratio & batteries used in testing, they usually have regular shocks instead of oil filled ones so it will be a bit bouncy when it comes too handling.

Tomley rc garage also has a review on this which is another fairly slow but good crawler for the size for a forest trail or backyard running.

Cool idea, but not quite sure why someone would buy this over the 3s version. Spending the extra $80 is the way to go imo since it's the killer deal.
I seen that parents buy more the brushed version to their kids, extra 80 makes a big difference so if you look at the business and parents market this is a great deal

@@JMOSORT I get it. Some will buy it just because the price is lower and they don't know any better.
I have 4 boys so if I got each kid or even just the older 2 one of these the 160 makes a difference.
The other part alot of kids have 1 way to drive. And that is throttle full all the time
@@philthyco1 It would cost over $150 extra to turn this into a 3s blx and that's a low estimate. Retail prices would be over $200. That brings the total to $420 or more unless the upgrades are secondhand. Upgrading the 3s version would be much smarter. But if people have money to burn, then it's good I guess.
Same shocks as the senton mega? I destroyed a shock on my senton when i hit a rock jumping it😂
ouch!
IMO get the typhon 3s if you got the extra cash. Lots of fun for the kids AND parents haha its plenty fast. I have the 6S its AWESOME but wayyyyy too fast for most young kids and also pricey at 500 with the additional cost of 6s batteries.
Will I need to replace the esc if I upgrade the motor?
You would most likely need both. Spend money on the esc first. You wouldnt want the "controller" to be inferior to what its controlling. No one has the stats on the mega esc but some forums people speculate it around 35w though none is sure what it really is.
I love all my arrma rigs they're coming along way! Only thing I don't like about this one is plastic 48p spur gear
I own all traxxas, is there a adapter for traxxas batteries to work in other vehicles?
There are adapters out there, but they are a "use at your own risk" item.
Is that any that you’d recommend? I understand that they are use at your own risk and appreciate any recommendations

Great vid. I have to ask 3 years later, is it still the most durable bang for the buck entry level RC out there for $180?
Hey bud... a little late to the party. Any asshole can spend a pile of money and get the hottest gear... I purposely chose this setup so I could show my boy how to wrench and maintain his gear. Hope this helped. Good luck on your journey.
@@markfowler4619 thanks for the reply. Santa ended up getting my son the brushed version and he loves it! He's 6 so he doesn't need a speed demon. Just be aware that it would cost you much more to upgrade this to the 3s version than just buying a 3s version.
My boys who are driving it in the video are 9. Perfectly powered for them. Later you could put a brushless in, but there is the cost of the system and you probably need to upgrade to the bearing supported center shaft.
