A Wisconsin man stands trial for allegedly murdering and dismembering his parents without remorse, and providing false information on their disappearances. Chandler Michael Halderson, 23, faces charges including first-degree intentional homicide. Remains from his father Bart Halderson, 50, and mother Krista Halderson, 53, were found days apart, authorities said.
Defendant Halderson reported his parents missing July 7th, claiming they left their home in the Village of Windsor days before on the 1st. He told WISC-TV at the time that they were going to the village of White Lake, Wisconsin.
“My last message I got from them, they were going to White Lake for the Fourth of July,” he told “There are some festivities that go around there. Better drink prices at the bars. Stuff like that.”
He said that to his knowledge, they were then going to their cabin in Langlade County.
“Along the way, they could’ve stopped many places,” he said. “I wouldn’t know all of them.”
He was allegedly just feeding everyone lies.
Bart’s torso was found in rural Dane County, while remains from Krista were found in Sauk County and property run by the Department of Natural Resources, according to court documents obtained by The Wisconsin State Journal.
Their son had been searching Google for terms like “Body found Wisconsin,” “Woman’s body found in Wisconsin,” “Wisconsin dismembered body found,” and “Dead body found in Wisconsin,” authorities said. Investigators suggested Chandler Halderson used to a visit to property belonging to the partner of his girlfriend’s mother as cover to hide his father’s torso nearby. He had shot Bart Halderson at least once before dismembering him, officials said.
According to investigators, Halderson said after his arrest that “you don’t know the whole story,” and that he “didn’t feel bad about what I did.”

I know someone who, in college spent 3 semesters tuition on drugs, lying to his parents all the while. He eventually came clean, had to take out loans for the semesters he missed. It was a pretty miserable time, but many years later, he’s an engineer, married, two kids. Parents can be incredibly forgiving and supportive and I’m sure Chandlers would have been if they had been given the chance.
I think his dad was a tyrant (to Chas, but not to his older brother), and Chas hated his dad. He became desperate and disillusioned a long time ago. But ya, he could've tried to approach his dad about all of this.

And when they do say something, there's a lot of random nonsense before they get to the point, if there even is one. Like around @30:00 talking about the login times, the way she phrased the question about how login times are generated, how many applications need passwords, the confusion around when passwords are required (log on vs log off). It took her waaay to long to get to the point that _somebody_ logged in around 4PM, after Bart was presumably dead. That's like the strongest piece of doubt in this case, you think they'd be on top of it.
I have never followed a similar trail. He should plead guilty.
To everyone commenting about the length of the process : it is this thorough to avoid any chance of him getting out of his reckoning. He must be convincted of his crime and nothing will be left out in order to secure that conviction. It's for everybody's safety that such a detailed trial takes place.
I think they just wanted him to please guilty, rather than waste peoples time.
Yes, prosecution did say, at end of opening statement, that it would be thorough and repetitive to ensure the job was done properly.

The length and process here is typical of all major cases specifically homicide. Nothing unusual about this. It prevents any appeal years down the line and while he sits in gladiator school with no hope of release
Absolutely shocked at the amount of time,hours and money is going into this farce. At the state's expense. This kid is so sick to put all of these people , including people he knows and "loves?" through this horror. Especially when the outcome will be the same.

He’s a psychopath! He had his girlfriend fooled for months after his parents bodies were found. Find the RUclips videos called chandler halderson jail calls. She stayed by his side was too long. Even after his dads torso was found on her mom’s girlfriend property. If you haven’t seen cat’s police interviews(2) watch them first. Then listen to the jail cells months later. She was nuts to stand by him.

I'm trying to imagine how embarrassed I would be if these were my records being aired for the entire world to see and those records showed that I didn't even attempt many of my college classes and I ended up with F's in the others, and all the time I am telling my family and friends what a stellar student I was and how I am in line to graduate very soon and based on my outstanding grades I have been offered a prestigious job at SpaceX. I'm pretty sure I would have been trying to crawl UNDER that table!
I must say that the prosecutor in this case leaves no stone unturned. He seemingly discounts EVERY single lie that Chandler has been feeding people for the last year or so. Again, if this were ME they were proving did nothing but tell blatant lies, I would have been trying to crawl under the table. I might even be a bit relieved to find myself in a prison cell where NO ONE can confront me about any more of my lies! No matter how accomplished a liar Chandler believed himself to be, I don't understand how he couldn't realize that eventually all those lies would catch up with him.

I don't understand the point of all of it. He's so cocky going to trial. He sits there half asleep with his squishy, sausage fingers playing with his pen. Totally unphased by everything around him. Unaware, or uncaring that he destroyed many lives. Completely without empathy. I can't help but wonder if the point of this is just to get out of jail for a few days and take his chances. The only time he's ever shown feelings is when it's in relation to himself getting into trouble/getting caught. He doesn't care about anyone or anything else. People are pawns to him. He's exactly where he belongs. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.

He chose to go to trial probably because 1) Wisconsin does not have the death penalty and 2) The prosecution has such overwhelming evidence to convict that they declined to offer him a plea deal...so Chandler and his defense decided to roll the dice.

He killed for those school records. He didn't want his loved ones to know, but now his records are on full display for everyone in the world to see and archived forever in the internet. I feel bad for feeling vindicated that he's being humiliated, but it was satisfying; the prosecution went through every course and every grade one by one. He kept his secrets for too long and it took a full-blown hearing to wring it out of him in the most humiliating way possible.

It's hard to present an effective defense when the defendant made so many mistakes and left so many clues. Plus the prosecution and law enforcement took a "no expense spared" attitude in gathering evidence and getting witnesses.

They are doing the only thing they can do, make sure that his rights aren't violated as he meets justice.
Maybe hope that the prosecution screws up somewhere they can capitalize on, and preserve any objections for a possible appeals trial... but this case is pretty much a forgone conclusion, only thing to do is make the prosecution does their job by the numbers.
I mean their opening strategy was "my client didn't do it, reasonable doubt is a thing, thank you for your time."
Short of a signed confession this is about as slam dunk as they come. The only reason to not take a plea deal here is that there is literally no downside.
Prosecution wouldn't offer one and there is no value in him accepting one, his only hopes are a rouge jury, a process error or the second coming... in short, he's pretty much hosed.
The poor defense team does not have a crumb of evidence in favor of their client Chandler.
I am sure they will be happy knowing they served to the best of their ability for this awful individual who will be counting the bricks and tiles in his cell for the wrest of his life.

I can’t believe that his professional, highly intelligent Dad never drove to the college after the first run-around but, let this charade continue for over a year. I mean it’s not like the school was on the east coast. As for the job, if my son was getting the run-around to getting his paycheck, I would’ve called a lawyer. Now, I understand that parents let their adult children handle their own problems however, if my adult son was living off of me, asking me for money, eating my food and giving me these reasons as to why he never had money, I would’ve gotten involved wayyyyyy before that time.

Even though it seems incredible over so much time, parents often choose to hope their intuition is wrong, to excuse their child, to pray that the adolescent will realise mistakes and get back on track. It delusion and hope and love...sadly makes parents wear blinkers sometimes.
Being a parent of at home adult kids, you definitely shift from parenting to trying to stay out of their business, and let them handle their adult problems on their own. It's a tough shft. We have several kids, and with some I helicoptered too much, with the others, I disappeared too much. No handbook on how to live as a parent with adult kids in the house. You need to let them navigate on their own and fail on their own and not step in to rescue right away. Tough calls. Such great parents he had.

This guy is a tax expert, but yet is not questioning why they are not receiving any tax documents from the college…the guy is paid to find loopholes and the minutiae of tax law, but his kid can send a hundred emails riddled with spelling errors from personal email accounts and he doesnt probe any further. Or how about you sit in on one of his “work” calls…working from home it would be incredibly easy. Where were his textbooks? Homework, etc…

I can't understand how a tax manager and a "helicopter mother" (by all accounts, including Mitchell's) were taken in by his lie for so long. Yes, he was over 18 but he lived under his parents' roof and ate their food, so they had every right to ask questions. I don't understand how he did not have to present his transcript after every semester. Same with his work contract.

What is the defense using to say their client is innocent? Or are they just there to test the prosecutions ability to prove him guilty without a reasonable doubt?
The defence's job is to break down the prosecution's evidence to show that there is some reasonable doubt. But there is just so much incontrovertible evidence against their client.
They were assigned to him as public defenders. I don't think they can do anything but sit through the evidence until the end. I was wondering/hoping they have appealed to him to plead guilty and put an end to this, but he doesn't seem to care.
I think they're mostly there to ensure a fair trial, and they did a good job at that. If chandler had wanted to be found innocent it would have been smart for him to not commit these crimes or at the very least hide them better
We had a nephew who pretended he was going to high sschool for 4 years.He even was going to pretend he was going to graduate. People were going to fly in from out of state for the party. A car from his dad. And then supposedly on to the Mariners. All lies.
He was busted right before graduation. And then all was forgiven. No biggy according to his dad. New story. He would simply get his GED and then on to the Marines.

Just noting because I don’t think some people realize this- the defense has been objecting to evidence the entire time. Every time there’s a sidebar, that’s the defense and prosecution arguing with the judge over whether entire chunks of evidence are admissible at all. A lot of these witnesses are testifying after the defense has already done their best to argue against their testimony (or aspects of it) being given to the jury. Of course they don’t have much left to object to once their main arguments have already been overruled. They’re doing their job -it’s not their fault the prosecution has such a strong case.

I would like to say that. Chandler's parents took their son's words as truthful and honest Why? Because his parents wanted to treat him as an adult. but it turned out to be he was not what they hoped. A liar manipulator, that had no remorse towards both parents. Their son denied them a proper burial. The judge was one great judge of all time who had remorse towards Chandler's parents who he never met. not like their son who has not had one teardrop at all.

No, they were public defenders appointed at no cost. And their lack of what appears to be serious defense is likely because they were well aware his guilt was overwhelming. I don't blame them, public defenders are an important part of the justice system and sometimes they simply have nothing to work with.

Chandler should’ve TRIED to join the Army. He probably could have lied his way in; it’s better than what he did. Obviously, he knew that the “gig was up” and he was about to get kicked out of his parent.s home, lose his girlfriend and her family’s support and, probably his other friends.. Yes. I don’t remember exactly how many were found, but I know one was found on some yellow duct tape that was also found in the trash bin. This trash bin contained a tarp with dna evidence from both parents.
I audibly wtf'd when they showed that picture. It was so incredibly obvious, positioned on top of the log almost balancing there, obviously no way to know for sure that it was intentional, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a set of circumstances that would lead to one small piece of bone to be left on the very top of the wood logs like that, while most everything else was in the trap. Strange little detail that will drive me mad lol.

It just was very morbidly odd that he cleaned that entire fireplace, put new logs in as well and left a small facial bone right on top for everyone to see. It's not hidden, it's in plain sight. It's eating away at me weeks later now why and who do it! He was covering his tracks, so he thought, but this is definitely a nail bitter for me!
We're all familiar with cutting through our dads thighbone with a dull handsaw at various angles and how awkward it is when he just won't stand still.

My husband had a very interesting take on this case. We have heard terms like psychopath, sociopath, evil. He said no self esteem, pressure from not being capable of living up to what was expected so withdrawing. I thought of the Wahlburg brothers and how they rallied around a brother that couldn't succeed in what they were doing yet helped him to be successful in what he was good at. Some of that type of support might have changed this outcome. It makes this even more sad.
I agree with you there. Interesting analysis by your husband - it may have been a good defense strategy.
A more competent defense attorney might also have looked into the possibility of Chandler being affected by the meds he was taking for his fake injury.
I wonder if he was taking the drugs the day of the murder and whether it would have lowered his inhibitions just enough that he was able to go through with the murder of his parents.

Hahaha. Is the defense trying to argue that there is no way that Chandler could have used Bart’s laptop because he wouldn’t have known the passwords. Because, I’m sure that there are SEVERAL people who keep their login information on a post it note, or in a notebook, etc… or, Bart could have created the same password that he uses for other things, and it could be known to the family. Or again, it may be written down somewhere.
This defense attorney absolutely sucks at her job, but then again, there is so much solid information that it can’t really be disputed. But, I’m waiting for ineffective counsel as his reason for an appeal once he gets convicted. 😂 He is such a narcissist, which is why with all the evidence, he chose to plead not guilty. I don’t doubt for a second that his parents were the only people on his hit list of people who he wanted to murder and chop up. There is way more to this story, and it’s just sick, twisted, and scary..
She was assigned to him as a public defender. I don't think she has anythinng she can honestly object to. Did you watch her opening statement? She didn't say the defense would prove anything during the case, she just said everyone is innocent until proven guillty and to please keep an open mind. I feel she is hamstrung by this defendent. I can't imagine what she'll be able to say during closing arguments.
@@momohmom2 Yeah, I’ve never watched a trial so closely as I have with this one. But, she cannot dispute the facts, and there are plenty of them. I do remember that she reserved her right to cross examine Cat at a later date instead of the days that the prosecution had her on the stand. And, I mean, you can tell she’s a public defender, but at the same time, she could have been an extremely well paid attorney, and there would be nothing they could really say. He screwed himself. He basically handed them all the information that they needed to know when trying to establish his week long story. He deserves to die a slow and painful death for what he’s done. But, that’s just my opinion.
He is a classic death penalty case. However let family condemn him to life without parole if they want him to .

Yes, these murders are shocking. But not exactly original. Look up Dana Ewell and Thomas Whitaker. These two college age sons planned and executed the murder of their parents and one sibling each. Oddly enough, I believe both fathers of the lying, drop out college students survived and they both weren't executed because of their father's undying love and in one case working tirelessly to commute his sons death penalty to life in prison. These two men were in different states and decided to kill their families rather than admit complicated and drawn out lying and admit they never completed courses. They BOTH did the murders for insurance payouts as well. They were from Texas, and California. 1992 and 2003. These guys had help by hiring some of their friends. Chandler is infinitely dumber, lazier and unluckier. Thank goodness it didn't drag out as long.

He put so much effort and work into this farce of being a student and being employed while being a complete loser that wanted to stay at home and play video games and have no responsibilities. For those complaining of the length of time for the trial, I get you. It's frustrating and disgusting he is pleading not guilty to waste tax payers time and money to have a trial but the law states he is innocent until proven guilty and the jury has to find him guilty without hesitation so the prosecution has to show everything that will give the jury absolute cause to decide guilty. The defense is not aiding the defendant whatsoever so hopefully it's a quick debate and he's thrown away in jail

What exactly did Norman Bates hope to achieve with this utter farce of a trial? The evidence against him stacked up so high, it almost obliterated the two useless lumps of lard defending him! If you can call that a defence - they didn't land a single blow against the prosecution case. I imagine prosecutor William Brown found their rare challenges to his statements as troubling as a mauling by toothless poodles.
All Chandler succeeded in doing is showing the world in gruesome detail what he did to the parents who loved and supported him, and the elaborate campaign of deception he maintained for years to keep his parasitic, jobless lifestyle to age 23.
Advertising his wasted life as a murderer and pathological liar on global TV cost the taxpayer thousands of dollars. It also put his parents' loved ones through added trauma, and further humiliated his parents with details of their dismemberment and photos of their discarded body parts. Bart and Krista were by all accounts decent people, who didn't deserve their horrific fate. But there's no denying their son Chandler represents a disastrous failure on their part.
It also showed how idiotic his parents were by letting him get away with his filthy lies for so long. I mean every college email ends in . Edu. Maybe just maybe, they would be alive today had they stopped him sooner and not have played into his web of lies.
I believe Chandler successfully did exactly what he set out to do: remove his loving, supportive and yes, codependent parents, from his life and from every person or pets on planet Earth, and after their ghastly murders, dismemberments and disbursements around the area they lived & enjoyed life, insured their humiliation by having his perverted behaviors itemized and displayed in a court of law. In his utterly ill mind, his parents got their comeuppance, AND HE WON. Utterly diabolical. Kudos to all the investigators & prosecuting attorneys for their At efforts to map this case out so a phenomenally.
You do know they had more than one son and he was very successful in life. Just because they were murdered doesn't mean they did anything wrong. They truly believed everything their son told them they had no reason to doubt him. Even when I think about it it baffles my mind that this kid told so many lies for so long. It makes me wonder how long he had been thinking about killing his parents. The farce had to end sometime and how he planned to do that may have always been this way.
@@Sunstar441 There have been a few similar murders in recent years, in which a spoiled, twenty-something man-child still living with parents and financially dependent on them, kills them when he fears his free ride is coming to an end and he might have to - shock, horror - live like an adult. The murders committed by Grant Amato and Joel Guy Jnr, among others, have obvious parallels with the Chandler Halderson case.
They are intriguing stories, on many levels. Obviously for a non-killer, it's impossible to fathom how a person could brutally kill any human being, least of all the humans who birthed, raised and nurtured you all your life. As a journalist for many years, my default position is nosiness - I want to know how and why bizarre, unexpected things like this happen. Particularly if reaching a better understanding of it, could potentially prevent future tragedies.
The reasons are obviously complex, even if you are the killer, it's doubtful you'll ever fully understand it. But the similarities between this and other parental murders by entitled sons are striking, and surely provide some significant clues. In all three murder cases I referenced (and others I did not), the killer's mom and dad's parenting styles were the polar opposite of each other - with mom playing 'good cop' and dad as 'bad cop'.
In every case the mom was over indulgent, a helicopter mom too invested in her adult son, as though he were still a child, too generous and too tolerant with him, delighted he was still living at home, despite being an adult. Picking up after him, not expecting him to do any housework or chores - failing to show him boundaries or expectations of good behaviour. In all cases, there was a sense the son disrespected/despised his indulgent mother. Krista once sent Chandler a text thanking him for waving at her that morning as she left for work, saying it had 'made her day'. She expected so little from him, and was pathetically grateful for the least little show of affection!
The mom will generally be a walking ATM machine, forever giving or 'loaning' him pocket money that's never re-paid, funding vacations and other treats, picking up his favourite snacks/candy/drinks for him while she's at the shops, cooking his favourite meals etc. She's also typically in daily contact with her son via cellphone, sending texts throughout the day and making sure he knows where she is and what she's doing at all times.
The father in these cases, is very different to her, but is also very much a traditional male just as she's a traditional female. He is generally a rock solid, reliable and dependable breadwinner in a good career, who worked hard all his life to keep his wife and kids (an example his son did not follow). With workaholic tendencies he was physically absent from the home for long periods, doing overtime and putting in extra hours. But in addition to being physically absent, the father was emotionally absent. Where mom was very hands on and affectionate with their kids - sometimes to the point of clingy - dad was a little stand-offish. He'd get home from work shattered, and the mom would pamper him, take his jacket and get his dinner. As head of the house, he expected to switch off, sit there and relax in front of the TV ,without paying the children much attention.
Where the mom is over tolerant and generous with their adult son, dad isn't - he is the one challenging him about why he isn't working, paying rent, tidying his bedroom, doing better things with his life, etc. The son generally stays out of his dad's way as much as possible to avoid conflict. In every case I've followed, the parents' murders followed a confrontation between father and son about his lazy lifestyle, involving some kind of deadline or ultimatum about him getting a job/moving out/becoming more independent. The son instead chose to kill both parents, believing it would provide a solution that would extend his dependant status.
With Chandler, the father-son showdown was about him dropping out of college and covering it up with an elaborate web of forged emails and hoax phone calls. Once that secret was out, all his other lies about jobs and disability would surely have quickly unravelled.
Grant Amato's parents were understandably angry after discovering he'd spent their $200k retirement fund on a Bulgarian 'cam girl' he chatted to online but would never even meet. After that discovery, Grant's father let him continue living with them at home, but made him obey a long, written list of rules - including never to contact the girl again. If he broke the rules, he was told he would be thrown out. His dad caught him reaching out to the woman on Twitter, and was furious. Enraged at this intrusion into his private life, Grant shot both parents in the back of the head, execution style, waited for his elder brother to return home and did the same to him.
You probably know the Joel Guy Jnr case, a parental murder by a 27 year old son who had never earned a cent in his life, because his Mom Lisa literally worked full time to give her entire salary to him. He'd been a student his whole life, supposedly training to become a plastic surgeon. But in his late twenties, there was no sign he was any closer to achieving that prestigious career. When his mom and dad told him they couldn't continue bankrolling him, as they'd decided to retire and would no longer have the income, he was silently seething. He set about secretly plotting their murders, buying the equipment to kill and dismember them, using his mother's cash. The murders and disposal of the bodies in this case was particularly horrific, and points to huge anger.
One lunchtime, during a Thanksgiving visit, Joel Jnr viciously stabbed dad Joel Snr to death as he was exercising on a step machine in a bedroom. Then he awaited his mom Lisa's return from Walmart, called her upstairs and launched a similarly frenzied and bloody attack. After cutting the clothes from their dead bodies, he set about dismembering them. He dissolved their torsos in two plastic tubs he'd filled with corrosive drain cleaner. He 'snapped' his mother's head from her shoulders with his bare hands, carried it, dripping blood, downstairs to the kitchen, and boiled it in a large saucepan on the stove. They were yet another couple whose devotion to their adult son was rewarded with horrific violence. He didn't love them back - quite the opposite, he hated them!
Another similarity in these three cases, is that despite the mountain of evidence against them, every killer pleaded Not Guilty. This forced a full jury trial, at which the victims' loved ones had to give evidence, and endure all the terrible details of their last moments. Why did they want those full trials? They must have known they hadn't a hope of getting away with their murders - unsurprisingly, none of the defendants elected to take the stand and speak in their own defence! I think they were proud of what they had done, and the televised murder trial was their last hurrah, a final farewell and Eff You to the world.
You pointed out Chandler's brother Mitchell was a 'normal' guy, and the other murders I've mentioned also feature apparently harmless, decent siblings. Obviously in 99% of cases this kind of parenting won't play any role in a son becoming a family annihilator. I was clear in my original post that Bart and Krista did nothing to deserve their murders - nor did the other cruelly annihilated family members. But I think it would be dishonest to suggest their parenting styles played no role whatsoever in the tragedies that ensued. It has to have been a factor, and one piece of the jigsaw among many others, that created the perfect storm for parental murder.
There are too many similarities in the family dynamics in which these homicides occurred, for it to be mere coincidence. I want experts to study people like Chandler Halderson and Joel Guy Jr while they're costing the taxpayer money living out their days in prison. I say, study them like lab rats, whether they like it or not! If it prevents even one more murder like these by an entitled man-child, it will be effort well spent.
