HOW TO CUT AN UNDER BURST DRESS WITH RUCHED SHOULDER

Cutting and sewing an underbust cut-out dress with ruched shoulders

Pattern Preparation
1. _Create an underbust cut-out dress pattern_: Use a commercial pattern or draft your own pattern using your measurements. Ensure the pattern includes a cut-out design and ruched shoulders.
2. _Modify the pattern (optional)_: If desired, modify the pattern to include additional features like a sweetheart neckline, bell-shaped sleeves, or intricate lace trim.
3. _True the pattern_: True the pattern to ensure a smooth, curved silhouette. This involves adjusting the pattern pieces to create a seamless, flowing line from the shoulder to the hip.
Cutting Out the Fabric
1. _Cut two front pieces_: Cut two front pieces from your fabric, using the modified underbust cut-out dress pattern. Ensure the fabric is folded in half, with the right sides together.
2. _Cut two back pieces_: Cut two back pieces from your fabric, using the underbust cut-out dress pattern. Again, ensure the fabric is folded in half, with the right sides together.
3. _Cut the shoulder ruching pieces_: Cut two shoulder ruching pieces from your fabric, using a rectangular pattern piece.
4. _Cut the cut-out pieces (optional)_: If your design includes a cut-out, cut two cut-out pieces from your fabric, using a pattern piece or a rectangle with a curved edge.
Sewing the Dress
1. _Construct the bodice_: Sew the front and back pieces together at the sides and shoulders, using a 1/4" seam allowance.
2. _Add the shoulder ruching_: Fold the shoulder ruching pieces in half lengthwise and sew along the edge, creating a casing. Thread ruching elastic or gathering thread through the casing and gather the fabric to create the ruched effect.
