R.I.P. Eddie You were a big part of the caring of these great horses. To include everything in the movie, it would have been 3 hours or more. Nice to see this priceless video. Thanks for posting.
How I love this. I knew Eddie Sweat briefly while I walked hots for Lucian one summer. He was a gentleman and knew soooo much about horses! He was quite articulate.
Eddie sweat was a beautiful horseman. Absolutely amazing with horses. I wish all horsemen were like him today. So genuine and humble with these beautiful animals.
I adored Riva. Thought he was neater than peanut butter. Have been very heart sore, everything is about his stablemate. He deserved better than what he received.
I'm glad this wonderful historical tidbit was posted. Mr. Sweat took care of more horses than any of us realize, but to have responsibility's for the care and welfare of two horses that won 5 out of 6 TC races in consecutive years has got to be a record.
Riva Ridge never seemed to get the credit he deserved. Great race horse with a big heart. It's great to see Eddie Sweat and Lucien Laurin working with Riva Ridge, one year prior to Secretariat winning the Triple Crown. If it weren't for a muddy track at the Preakness, maybe Riva Ridge could have won the Triple Crown in 1972. Beautiful horse who died way too young (age 16). Thanks for sharing this wonderful video!
Riva Ridge and Secretariat were tremendous stablemates the Pride of Meadow Stables in Historical beautiful Doswell Virginia. Eddie Sweat was the best groom ever this is priceless amazing video Lucien Loren was an awesome trainer jockey Ronnie Turcotte rode both Riva Ridge and Secretariat awesome
I can't thank you enough for posting this. It was unbelievable to see Eddie Sweat & how he was with Riva Ridge. This is the first "insider" view of what happens between races. I LOVED watching Eddie. I know that Secretariat LOVED him. What a GREAT video. Thank you!!
I love seeing Eddie, Riva Ridge & Charlie in this video. Eddie loved the horses with all his heart & the horse loved him even more !! Thank You so much for making this video available for us to watch. It brings back so many happy memories :)
From the Daily Racing Form (DRF.com) 09/30/2010 - Penny Chenery on the movie "Secretariat" - “The movie barely mentions Angle Light in the race call of the Wood,” Chenery said. “That, Riva Ridge, and my sister would be the three major omissions in my estimation. It was Riva Ridge who really saved the farm, but that would detract from the story, wouldn’t it?” Riva Ridge was always Ms. Chenery and Lucien Laurin's favorite.
The Chenery family and their team of great people like Lucian, Charley, Eddie, etc. managed after decades of hard work and dedication, to bring two great Champions to the racetrack. How many other stables can boast winning 5 of the 6 Triple Crown races and setting three still standing track records for speed and endurance in a two successive year period ? Riva saved the farm and Secretariat put the Chenery name in the history books for all time.
What a nice video! Lovely Riva Ridge, RIP!!!! Eddie was so good with horses.....Riva saved the farm....I have books on Sec and also Riva!! Loved his ears! Riva Way is at Old Friends....
Men like Eddie Sweet were instrumental in bringing two great horses to racing so they could bring home 5 out of 6 Triple Crown races in just two years. I believe THAT is a record, also.
@bruce robbins Riva was simply outdone by a rain storm. Winning 2 out of 3 is an incredible accomplishment and again outdone by a damn downpour. He lost the Preakness if memory serves me correctly and normally its the Belmont that trips up a horse. Not convinced he shouldn't have won Horse of the Year ahead of the 2 year old Secretariat?
Thank you for posting this. It's awesome to see actual footage after reading Secretariat! Very Educational too. I don't think he was "homely" as the book says he is. He has his own charm.
Riva had legs for daysssss! :) Kinda funny looking but sure could run!! I read that he had to be pampered and reassured all the time and would get depressed if he didn't get lots of attention. Fantastic clip!! Love seeing Eddie Sweat and Lucien Lauren!!!
everyone loved him he use to eat my peanut butter sandwhiches out of tack box then one day i caught him i thought the other groom or someone was gettin em he was a gentle horse.how did they ever come up w/ this film my god it has been so long.
I made my luck on KISSIN KRIS and MY MEMOIRS but RIVA RIDGE was my thrill before I was too young to bet. What a horse! I am married to Kris, and live in a Paris apartment paid for on the winnings. Dancing Kris and all the Kris line are of great interest, and MY MEMOIRS was a fabulous mare who survived a terrible fire. Thank you for this!
The men and women who went along for the ride with Riva Ridge and Secretariat were making history and completing the life's work of Mr. and Mrs. Chenery. I'm told that no other breeder in history has won 5 out of 6 Triple Crown races in consecutive years, and with only two horses to boot !
Met Riva n red @ Claiborne n 78. I loved em both n due 2 laurin's comment 'I got 1 better than him n the barn', I picked Red 2 win the triple crown in Oct. 72. I mean better than Riva? How could I lose. I remember how 'they dismissed my prediction. Those that r still alive remember. I remember the 1st race Riva won. I was there. River Downs. I remember the 1st time I heard Red name. N the radio. 'They're n the stretch n here comes Secretariat'. N a way, it's such a sad time for me seeing them. I didn't know I'd never c horse's like that again.
No, it can't be Secretariat. (I wish it was.) He was never at Keeneland. Riva would have been at Keeneland only for the Bluegrass Stakes...that's in April 1972. Secretariat was shipped from Hialeah to Belmont on April 3 that year according to the log compiled by Bill Nack, with assistance from Lucien Laurin & Henry Hoeffner. .. see the book by Raymond G. Woolfe Jr.
I remember seeing this back in '72 ...it would have been filmed in April 1972, most likely BEFORE the Bluegrass Stakes....Riva Ridge had already won the 2 yo championship for 1971. Was it shown by CBS during their Derby coverage... showing Riva as a Derby hopeful? Anybody got a better memory about the original broadcast of this clip?
Where was the big heart when sec got his ass kicked, especially by prove out at the woodward? Kelso is the greatest racehorse of all-times, go look kelso up and, make sure you're sitting down. KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN
Really? Hmmm, I think that Secretariat still holds the TC statistics! His Preakness time was corrected not too long ago! Secretariat, it is written! When Secretariat lost races, it was not due to his inability to win, he was sick! With an abscess in his lip, the size of a half dollar, he still came in 3rd! That's dedication! Please note that I appreciate all of these horses efforts, and there are other great horses out there. However IMHO, Secretariat is the greatest! His TC times speak for themselves!
Sec is great with his heart double than usual..but Riva Ridge lacking that characteristic, still managed to race with his TC stablemate well and good in the marlboro as a 4-yr old.. credits for RR!
If not for Riva's success, poor Secretariat might've ended up a lead pony on the bankrupt Meadow Farm. Thankfully Riva Ridge was too good to let that happen! Why was Secretariat so good? Because Riva Ridge was so good!!!
Actually before both of them Round Table saved the farm. In 1957 as a 3 year old Round Table saved Claiborne farms from going bankrupt. He "more or less held the farm together, paid the estate taxes, and so on," this was said by Arthur Bull Hancock after his father died. Round Table himself was an phenomenal racehorse being considered by experts the best American turf racer in history.
Wonderful vid! It should be attached to the movie "Secretariat" since that disaster didn't see fit to even MENTION Big Red's less fortunate STABLEMATE! But thanks so much for the post!
everyone loved him he use to eat my peanut butter sandwhiches out of tack box then one day i caught him i thought the other groom or someone was gettin em he was a gentle horse.

Funny prove out kicked riva ridges' butt so bad at the 2 mile jockey gold cup that ridge just couldn't keep up with him and, gave up and, ended up last. Prove out did 3:20 flat for tha 2 mile gold cup the secound fastest horses to ever win run the 2 mile jockey gold cup after the great kelso who not only is the only horse to win it 5 times, kelso hlds the 3 fastest timings for it breaking the record 2 times on 2 sloppy tracks!!!! Oh by the way prove out holds the 4th fastest timing for it. Prove out also kicked secretariats' butt inn the woodward giving 7 pounds away to him. Secretariat never raced prove out again, though he could have faced him in the 2 mile jockey gold cup. Think kelso had a chance in hell to whup secretariat? Kelso is the greatest racehorse of all-times and, it's not even close. Neither man of war or, secretariaty set a record on a sloppy track kelso did it twice in one of them breaking his own record! KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN..
Riva had as his grand sire the Irish Turn-to, who is found in many stayers. He also has many other greats like Nearco. Prove Out was a very good horse. He kicked "The Immortal" Secretariat's but in the Woodward. Riva has ETRs, NWorldR at 1-3/16, and a NTR at 9 f. at Aquaduct. 1997 went into the Hall of Fame, was champion US 2 year old, and champion US Older Horse. What a beautiful memories eddy, riva ridge and and my beautiful big boy secretariat
What a precious person. That groom.
R.I.P. Eddie You were a big part of the caring of these great horses. To include everything in the movie, it would have been 3 hours or more. Nice to see this priceless video. Thanks for posting.
Beautiful Riva Ridge.
How I love this. I knew Eddie Sweat briefly while I walked hots for Lucian one summer. He was a gentleman and knew soooo much about horses! He was quite articulate.
To see Shorty alive and well again just warms my heart. And to hear his voice. He had a melodious voice. Riva looks like a real sweet heart.
Eddie sweat was a beautiful horseman. Absolutely amazing with horses. I wish all horsemen were like him today. So genuine and humble with these beautiful animals.
RIP RIVA YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN, YOU ARE THE FORGOTTEN HERO FOR MEADOW STABLES.🐎
Yes!!!!!!!!
❤️
Without Riva there might have been no Secretariat. Run free, beautiful Meadow steeds!
And Eddie, both were too good for this world.
I adored Riva. Thought he was neater than peanut butter. Have been very heart sore, everything is about his stablemate. He deserved better than what he received.

LOL. Just like Cicada crushed Kelso in 1961 and 1962? Kelso only won 61% of his races. He ran some good races but was hardly dominant.
BTW, didn't Beau Purple (trained by Allen Jerkens) beat Kelso 3 out of 4 times? How did that happen?
@@teddylopez747 Too bad you were absent from class the day the teacher handed out the brains.
He aspirated a fly I believe...he was taken far too soon in such a freakish way...😥
Thank you for the video featuring Riva Ridge...
I bet Eddie and Secretariat are together now and having a grand time. They were 2 of a kind, both with big hearts!
northernlitez1 and Penny also and one of Secretariat’s exercises jockeys.

I;m glad to ''stumble'' across this video which shows a little more of the man who knew them best,,, Eddie
So glad to see one of the great horses of my younger years.
Riva Ridge had a pal named Secretariat.

important contributions to Riva Ridge and Secretariat's racing career...RIP

Thanks, just finished reading about Riva and Eddie and to see them up close, very satisfied. Thanks again
I remember seeing him race; he was beautiful.
Wonderful old clip, Eddie sure had a way with horses.
Oh wow :P
Amazing person
I just found this film again and watching Riva run is really something. He’s like a deer, but he moves so quick.
wow ,that brought back some memories of my youth ,the back stretch at 6am ,loved to watch horses work .
What a lovely video!

Too bad there is not a place in the Racing Hall of Fame for Eddie Sweat. He probably had as much to do with Secretariat's success as anyone.
@bruce robbins Hey Bruce, get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning, or is your boyfriend not giving you any loving.
@bruce robbins Riva was simply outdone by a rain storm. Winning 2 out of 3 is an incredible accomplishment and again outdone by a damn downpour. He reminds me of my mare- they have the same eyes and facial structure. He is her grandsire.
I think Mr. Eddie Sweat would have been a wonderful guy to know. He seems so gentle and genuine.
this is special video. thank you for showing master eddie sweat in his element.

@bruce robbins Every great horse lost races you idiot. I'm not even sure what this post has to do with anything.
He was such a leggy thing wasn't he? He was a beautiful horse though with a lot of talent.
Had it not been rainy when he ran the Preakness he would’ve won the Triple Crown. He was an amazing horse. The unsung hero of Meadow stables.
I think tampaslice meant that the barn would have gone bankrupt without Riva therefor Secretariat would have never been able to show his talent.
The men and women who went along for the ride with Riva Ridge and Secretariat were making history and completing the life's work of Mr. and Mrs. Chenery. I'm told that no other breeder in history has won 5 out of 6 Triple Crown races in consecutive years, and with only two horses to boot !

That HAS to be Eddie Sweat--the best groom there ever was.
They are all together now and Eddie is there caring for them.
I love the rendition of the song "Lazybones" playing in the final minute of this clip. Eddie was a masterpiece.
@tizfrreecharm
I don't think it was a "disaster" of a movie, but I sure was a little chagrined to see no story of Riva. He didn't exist in it.
The movie Secretariat was awful! There is such a wonderful story to tell, that should include the devotion of this fine man Eddie Sweat.
Diva was such a wonderful horse. But I love how he passes by the horse he called little baby and if you look closely it is Secretariat. Lol

Actually Secretariat was so good because he was a freak of nature with a heart more than doubled the size of other thorobreds

Describing Riva Ridge as "deer like", is pretty accurate, he's so narrow and with such spindly legs.

when was this video made, Riva died in 1985 right?
Sorry I didn’t see that autocorrect changed Riva to Diva. Sorry Riva.
Penny said Riva was her favorite. He was sweet-tempered but a bit of a diva and an attention hog. He would pout if he didn't get a lot of attention. "...legs like a deer." :) Would you believe it, they bred Riva Ridge to Somethingroyal, Secretariat's dam, when she was 24 years old! It was her last foal. I believe it was a colt they named Rossini.
