    I literally got a book out of the library just three weeks ago about Bass Reeves. An account written by Gary Paulsen (author of Hatchet), based on historical records. A wonderful book, and how strange it is that Fox decides to make this series just now! (Btw, I'm a huge fan of The Lone Ranger radio and tv series!). In any case, Bass Reeves was an extraordinary man, with an extraordinary life. He lived in the Oklahoma (Indian Territory), and did so much to bring law to its wild and lawless frontier.

    The story of Bass Reeves and what he accomplished is legendary and should be learned by all. But he is not, I repeat NOT the inspiration for The Lone Ranger. WHY do I say this? Because The Lone Ranger was created in 1933. There was nothing written about Bass Reeves available back then. Nor was he was never taught about in school at that time either. So the Lone Ranger creators, and the rest of the country never knew about Bass Reeves until almost 40 years later when accounts of his exploits began to surface in 1971. I know what my first sentence says, but now I wonder what proof is there that Bass Reeves ever actually existed. Is there an actual document that lists all U.S. Marshalls? And is Bass Reeves on that list? I did several internet searches asking one simple question. "When did schools start teaching students about Bass Reeves?" And the results were always just telling me about who he was and his history, but none of them answered the question, When was he taught about in school. In my heart of hearts I want to believe that such a man did exist for the sake of unifying humanity for the cause of law and justice, but I can't let my emotions decide what is the truth.

    • @JasonBroome-op3fv
      @JasonBroome-op3fv Год назад

      with a little bit of research and some understanding of urban folklore you might think differently. Bass Reaves transported hundreds of outlaws to a Federal Prison in Detroit, by train. The legendary lawman's reputation grew, not from 'in print' stories, but from word of mouth. The idea of The Lone Ranger was 'created' in Detroit, for radio at WXYZ . And while the 'inspiration' for The Lone Ranger comes from different sources, such as a book by the same name, or the Zorro series already in print - there is credible evidence that Bass Reaves may also have been one of those inspirations. As far as schools teaching about Bass Reaves - that is neither the benchmark for confirming something actually happened in history, nor is it something we should hope for. I never learned about Jackie Robinson in school, never learned about Jim Thorpe, or even Moses'Fleetwood' Walker (the first baseball player to break the color line). School isn't the only source for actual history - it can be a good resource, but so much has been left out of our text books. Fortunately, there are incredibly detailed records that not only confirm Bass Reaves really existed, but also provide verification of his record as a US Marshall. Many articles and court records from his day reveal his accomplishments - and many of his contemporaries wrote and spoke highly of him - so there is a lot of documentation to support and confirm him as a real person in history.

      African American history was not part of any school’s curriculum until the 1970’s. So if that’s your only reading for doubting his existence please watch the 1619 project to learn how black peoples were not only oppressed and silenced in history but was also not thought of as human beings. This has continued to happen. Whites stealing and taking credit for the accomplishments of others.
      As an example, did you know the Ebola virus was discovered by a black scientist in Africa. His name was Jean Muyembe but he never received credit because he shipped his samples off to a lab in Brlgium that had better microscopes and the scientists there who received the samples Peter Piot took credit for the discovery. This lack of respect continues. History is written by those in power, the truth gets buried under racism

    MOST Lawmen of the time worked alone or “Lone” if you will.
    MOST used a native “scout” in the Indian territories.
    EVERYONE paid with silver; it was the currency till 1964
    Whit or “pale” horses are very common and certainly not indicative to an exclusive rider. Also, to my own research and many other historians Bass Reeves had a light buckskin NOT a pure white horse.
    Honestly, this is taking AWAY from Marshal Reeve’s REAL and TRUE history and story by assimilating him with the purely fictional “Lone Ranger”. Which was a conglomeration of many western dime store heroes!
    To be honest….IF anyone should EVER be referred to as the “real” “Lone Ranger” it was Clayton Moore who made the fictional character “real” in many hearts and minds. He was deprived of it in real life and NOW; you historically ignorant panderers are even taking away THAT LEGACY from him as some sort of white washed hero of a purely functional character.
    Unbelievable!
    The is NOTHING to take away from Bass Reeves who certainly was an extraordinary lawman. However certainly NOT the basis for GT’s creation.

First, the creators of the Lone Ranger stated that they based the character on other fictional characters like Zorro and Robin Hood, which is why the Lone Ranger wears a mask. Second, Bass Reeves was a US Marshall, not a Texas Ranger. Third, the most likely real life inspiration for the Lone Ranger was John Reynolds Hughes, the longest-serving Texas Ranger in US history who had a book inspired by his life story called "The Lone Star Ranger."
