Taylor Sheridan, the man who created Yellowstone is an executive producer of this Bass Reeves mini series. And Taylor is pretty phenomenal when it comes to accuracy of a subject. It actually important to him, to get things right.
@@westendlawn Don't have Paramount+ so I have to wait for it to hit another streaming service but I hope you are right. Have not seen any of the "Yellowstone" shows but I have heard good things about them. I noticed the title is "LawMEN" not "LawMAN" so I wonder if they are going to do a bunch of limited series, each featuring a different lawman. That could be good, especially for a history buff like myself.
I wrote my final college paper on Bass Reeves. I live in Arkansas and was amazed that no one had heard of him. Details were scare about the US Marshall. Professor Art Burton was the only real source I could find. I contacted him and he went out of his way to help me any way he could. I doubt he remembers me but I will always be grateful for his kindness. Bass Reeves was indeed the "real deal" and it makes my heart sing that he is finally getting his due. If you are ever in NW Arkansas (Fort Smith), you can find a statue of Marshall Reeves and his trusty horse located next to Judge Parker's gallows.
Delroy Lindo played Bass Reeves in The Harder They Fall, an awesome black neo-western on Netflix, with the all-star cast of Idris Elba, Regina King, Jonathan Majors, LaKeith Stanfield and Zazie Beetz. I highly recommend it. Great chemistry with the cast. A lot of charm and charisma in these characters.
First heard of Bass Reeves in 1993 at a road side memorial sign on the Oklahoma/Missouri border. Stunned no movies had made of him. The series is long long over due. Another under appreciated figure in movies is Thomas-Alexandre Dumas. Many more roaring stories could be made of his escapades.
It was mind-blowing to discover that the Lone Ranger was based on the adventures of Bass Reeves. History has always been my favorite subject but Reeves was never mentioned when I was in high school. Just like the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 was ignored by schools. There is a lot of black history that has been suppressed or whitewashed. Now, today's technology is bringing a lot of truths to light. Black history is American history 💯
Who knew, not me! Back when I went to school, 50’s and 60’s, there wasn’t any black history or American Indian history. We didn’t even graduate learning about WW1, barely touching on WW2 and nothing about the Korean War. Vietnam was happening at the time so we definitely didn’t touch on that in school. Luckily my parents were both vets of WW2 so I learned at home what the schools didn’t teach us. My brother was in Vietnam and there was a lot of news coverage, I also learned from my peers. Sadly nothing was taught about the contribution and struggles of the black community. At 73 I continue to learn with an open mind daily. Now I have another book to read.
This is a cowboy western show I will watch. True stories of excellent Black people in history that have been erased or overlooked is so important for ALL audiences.
If anything, it is Whites who are having their history erased. And it's not just Confederates. BLM/Antifa rioters vandalized every old white guy statue they could, even one of Hans Christian Heg. Heg was an abolitionist who died fighting for the Union!
I heard about Bass Reeves from a BrainPop lesson the kids I was subbing for were doing. He was amazing! I'm so glad he's finally being portrayed onscreen. There are so few shows about Black cowboys and heroes of the Old West.
Black western heroes have a strength, integrity and appeal that may not be well known by everyone. But can never be discounted.. You just learn about them and go, wow....
A true legend! Glad that his story is being told and brought to light. And with all do respect do not reference Michael Jordan to any type of greatness especially when it comes to black people doing extraordinary things for the great goodwill of blacks
Please tell more stories like this, even without the Hollywood movie... maybe especially without the Hollywood movie. There are so many stories that'll soon be lost forever if we don't learn them now. Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and his team would be an excellent place to start.
They don’t know where he’s buried because, very likely, he was buried in a “black cemetery” which means his grave is unmarked. Really sad. I would’ve visited his grave and paid my respects.
@risitacositas1699 So it's been said. I've never seen any documentation for this claim. Have you? And no, that is not to say that Reeves doesn't deserve to be remembered.

No, The Lone Star Ranger is what the Lone Ranger is based on. It was published in 1915, but was itself a reworking of a couple different versions by the same author, Zane Grey. Bass Reeves’ story shares some similarities, to be sure, but it wasn’t the basis of the Lone Ranger.
@@benboru9013 okay, so they borrowed some details from Bass Reeves for the creation of the lone ranger. He's still the living person to it. I still think it's cool. Very cool. The Lone Ranger was actually based on a Zane Grey story titled the Lone Star Ranger. His origin and everything is taken from that story which was published long before the Lone Ranger came out. There was a book written about Bass Reeves that pointed out similarities between Reeves and the Lone Ranger and then people have taken that and run with it to make absolute claims that Lone Ranger is based on Bass Reeves.
