We picked up a few great tips in this video- thanks! Watching those colors flow and move was like looking at a lava lamp! If you're looking for budget-friendly, smooth card stock, consider Blick Studio Smooth Bristol- the price per sheet is pretty close to "dollar store" prices, but you get more sheets in the pad.
I am a recent follower and now I’m addicted to your Chanel! I even went so far as to call the manufacturer of the Accent Opaque paper because I feel like I have not found any decent cardstock yet. I wish I had you on speed dial for every time I run into a question :). Thank you for all the time and money you have put into all this research, recording, editing, posting and creating - I’m just sitting here waiting for your next video 🥰 You have inspired me to get back to my craft desk.
Wow...what a soul-filling comment! Thank you for taking the time to share this with me! It means so much! I'm trying to release more videos coming up because I've missed it so much. I'm about 2 a month right now and at one point was up to 15 a month. Lol. Thanks again
I love these cards, they are absolutely beautiful. I really liked the one where you were experimenting with the colors and let them drip down, then cut it out and made a card out of it. My favorite card was the galaxy card. I loved how you came up with idea of the moon and the alien, it is perfect for this card! Great tip on getting paper from the dollar tree, I never even thought to look there.
Tip for embossing white on black-try double stamping a white pigment ink instead of clear sticky ink, which will give a brighter white and fill in any gaps.
I saw an IG post recently where the maker positioned (and held with magnet) her paper just barely inside the corner of the stamp platform and stamped her sentiment. Then she pushed the paper flush into the corner and stamped again with just the ink already on the stamp. It created an awesome dark sentiment with a shadow in the same color but lighter and no fussiness with measuring for alignment. I hope this makes sense!
Hi. Yes. It makes perfect sense to me, I found that out by accident when it moved slightly and I hadn't noticed before I went for the second stamping. It was the first time it had happened where it didn't annoy me!😅
Let's just say I'm older than you by decades, in grade school in the 60s we did a stencil and splatter paint with a toothbrush and then picked up the stencil and poof it was art Usually it was Christmas art class. So fun.
I get old boxes of glossy photo paper for ink jet and laser printers (8.5 x 11 or 4 x 6) at thrift shops, and they are good with alcohol inks and alcohol ink markers. The gloss lets you ‘erase’ with the next color, instead of blending. Good for details like leaf shapes and leaf veins, etc. This video was so fun, thanks for the guidance. I like the fails too, saves a lot of time and energy. I often write out a recipe before I eat it; if it doesn’t work out, I label it Meh, and put it in the recipe box. It always gives me a smile, and helps prevent more Meh. ☺️
I love that you label stuff MEH. That's hilarious and I feel the same way about some of the stuff I make. But that's OK because it's all about the creative process
So fun and pretty. I use a lazy Susan turntable and just blow with a straw as I turn it. I had that same little blow dryer and it died after about 5 uses, I was so disappointed because it really did work well and the size was perfect. I have another that has a low cool setting but it's bulky. So it's back to the straw which I feel is the best control I ever got anyway and am careful not to breath in fumes. Love using the turntable, it's a game changer. Thanks for reminding me about the tacky glue trick. I have a ton on old gloppy glitter polish I'm going have some fun with too.
First of all, the moment I saw that alien, all I could think of was Grumpy Cat! 😹 He just has that same disgusted look that she did. (Grumpy Cat has sadly gone on to the Rainbow Bridge.) I love how you added him with the action wobbler, and your rationale for doing so - perfect! One tip that I thought of when you were stamping your words for heat embossing, is not to do CPR on your stamp platform - or acrylic block - with fine-line words or greetings. It can really tend to distort the lines. Gentle pressure is your friend. :) You can always stamp more than once (assuming you are using a stamp positioner of some sort), & just give a light whisper of a touch over your stamp each time. The same probably holds true with fine-line images as well. This is (I find) especially important with heat embossing, as the embossing powder will tend to "bulk up" the lines anyway. On that note, if you have fine lines in your words or images, use a fine-grind embossing powder to heat emboss. I know Ranger labels theirs as Super Fine Detail powder. Not sure of other companies' nomenclature for that, but it should be something similar. Anyway, that will help prevent the lines getting too thick, maybe not entirely, but better than coarse or regular grind powder. If you have a stamping platform, you can also double- or even triple-emboss things. Just stamp with sticky ink, apply embossing powder, & melt that. Don't remove the stamp from your platform. Then - after letting the embossing cool - put it back in your platform, ink up the stamp with the same ink, stamp it, & heat emboss again. This will give you a smoother embossing. Again, though, I wouldn't recommend this for fine-lined words/images, just for the distortion reason I gave. Anyway, those are my tips. Thank you for sharing your cards - I love how they came out! Take care, & have an awesome day! :)
Cool cards, Mary! And great tip/reminder to pull out the foil and do some foiling on the tacky spots! Hope I remember that when I need to do it. LOL!!! :)
I would have used a natural sponge dipped in the DrMartin white ink and pounced a few white crater like spots on your moon? Darling card at any rate and now I know the next birthday card for my grandson!
I’ve never thought about trying ,that back ground. I just bought the pack of large card stock at Dollar Tree, now I actually have something to do with it. I’m really starting to get into nautical or ocean cards. This “ could “ make a beautiful background! I just love your ideas, you do all the thinking for us. I’ve gotten so into carding, every piece of paper that comes in this house, whether mail etc. I’m looking for pretty paper. I get beautiful metallic paper from lining of envelopes. Alabama girl here
I've always been like that and only a couple of hours ago i was emptying some individually wrapped wafer bars out of the outer packaging. I noticed how shiny and uncreased it was so, yep, I trimmed it and popped it onto my desk. My husband has complained before about my hoarding tendancy but if it keeps it out of the landfill and saves me a little cash then I don't see it as a problem. 🤣
LOVE alcohol inks! They truly are PLAY for the artist 😊. I bought the Bearly Glue and it has become my fav too. LOVE that detail top. Finally bought the refill bottle too. Was out of stock everywhere for a long time. sometimes I will soak that detail tip in warm water and get it all cleaned like new. It is truly my go-to glue. You did a great job with the inks! You are my go-to for fun, quick morning videos with my coffee 🙃 You are a talented lady who keeps us all in check with our crafting dollars 😄 thanks!
I have an over abundance of photo cardstock. I use it for alcohol ink smooshing, just be sure to heat set after every color to avoid blending colors into "mud". Killing two birds with one stone, not having to buy Yupo paper and cleaning up some years old stash!
Hi. I was wondering if I had just kept missing the notifications for you until I read the comments, it seems so long since I've seen you so welcome back. Thanks for sharing your fun-filled video with all those amazing cards and handy hints, not to mention the ideas from your subscribers. I did so want that fabulous alcohol ink set that you linked but they don't ship to the UK, unfortunately. Such a shame and I can't seem to find it anywhere else. It really is sooo good to see you, just know that you have been sorely missed. Thank you again.
Oh this brightened my day so very much; thank you Deb! I have been very sporadic with my videos post-retirement from the military because I think I just needed a full reset during the summer with the kids. I have lots of ideas coming our way though. YAY!
Great ideas! Alcohol inks are fun to play with but I get stuck figuring out how to use them. I like your idea about pulling from stash to decorate the cards! 🙏
I tried sending a tip a while back but it didn't send. Use your gluestick, instead of your finger tools to spread liquid glue. No clean up required just cap it up as usual.
That's such a great tip! Thank you so much. The glue stick has to be one that dries tacky though. I haven't found one yet so if you know of 1 please share
Mary only just found your channel which is so helpful and interesting. I also noticed that you had to do a video about comments that you had received. These people would not have the nerve to say the things that they write I am sure. No tips to share I am afraid I'm not very good at art just love doing it. You have inspired me to get out my alcohol inks and try the galaxy. I have recently been doing some art around space since seeing the pictures send back by the James Webb telescope. Great channel.
Thank you so much for all this love and support. I appreciate you! Oh the James Webb telescope had my heart...those pictures make me swoon! Lol. Great idea to use it as inspiration
Awesome tips, Mary. Maybe I can offer you one as well. With the blow dryer, keep it straight up and down while blowing with lots of 91% alcohol to get the wispy edges. It gives more flowy edges instead of leggy edges if that’s what you are going for.
I like to use my alcohol inks on clear acetate. I wasn't aware that Barely Art Glue has inks. I am interested in that hair dryer so I will check out your link as well as the white paint from Dr Phil Martin.
Yes, after your embossing powder is melted and cooled, use a microfiber cloth to wipe the cardstock. It will come clean. My favorite is the white cloth from the Dollar Tree in the auto section.
Fantastic cards Mary 🥰 I love your alcohol ink backgrounds, your card designs and your hacks. I don't use alcohol ink ❤️ thanks for sharing your creativity Hugs xx
Yes fussy cutting I've heard for cutting out anything. I like bubble cutting for my sentiments only cause you are cutting around the letters instead of just a square or rectangle. Thanks so much for being here and for the sweet compliment!
Mary, I have a question: does the Revlon All-in-One Style Hot Air Kit blower work to heat emboss with embossing powders? Or would it blow all the powder away? I need a new tool for heat embossing, but want a tool that will multi task. Thanks!
SUCH a great question; I do not feel it would get hot enough; even the Wagner tool has 2 settings and the lower one does not heat emboss well; only the high (burn off your skin if not careful) temp works.
Not all slimlines are 8.5" x 3.5", which I mention only because if you buy slimline dies or border stamps assuming they're a standard size, you might be in for a shock. I prefer this size (which fits in a #9 business envelope).
I don't have alcohol marker reinkers, but if I'm getting that wrong and you mean all my alcohol inks themselves, I have. I used a piece of poster board, and dropped them on there then labeled them by writing in the name. I hope that helps.
Absolutely love your tips!!! I actually have some of those DT poster boards. I just need some alcohol inks! 😁 And your nail polish trick toward glitter... AWESOME!!! BUT... does the liquid from the nail polish ruin/warp the paper?
Thank you so much for the sweet comment! No the nail Polish liquid does not warp the paper. It helps that you're putting it on an application sponge 1st because that soaks up a lot of the liquid
Hi. I have some Arteza alcohol pens and some isopropanol (?) , No fancy, suitable paper bit I shall try it out some vellum and shiny cardstock just to see what happens.😅
Your backgrounds look great. I have tried alcohol inks a few times and I am not happy with the result. I always like other people results but not my own. I think I may need some more colors. The no bleed ink is something I learned from you on the video you compared white inks, one of my favorite purchases. When you use the sticky glue, will any regular glue work for that? Tfs. Hugs
Thank you so much for this! The glue has to be able to be tacky when it's dried. A lot of glues dry and they're not sticky but these 2 clues that I recommend and I put them in the description Box dry tacky or sticky
Mary, I am so intimidated by alcohol inks. I bought a few from Hobby Lobby that were on clearance, but I still haven't used them. I'm hoping they will work well on Photo paper, since I have some in my stash. Just an FYI for you and other readers, I saw a small pack of photo paper at Dollar Tree the other day. I am always looking for a bargain, esp. when trying something new. Glad to see you wearing gloves because I definitely would not have thought to do that and made a big 'ole mess. I don't have any blending solution. Is there a substitute I could use? Maybe I'll give the alcohol inks a try. I loved your cards and the vibrant colors the alcohol inks make!
Hi Janie, first don't be scared; just play! Get lost in the moment of creativity and expect nothing but peace to hit you. We get caught up on comparison a lot and it steals joy. Next, yes, you can substitute 99% alcohol for the blending solution; you really just want to get it moving around; that's all the blending solution does. Photo paper should work just fine; can't remember which side though. You might think it's the shiny side but check both. Lastly, you can search on my channel for "alcohol ink" and you'll get a playlist and others to assist you.
Hi Mary! Perfect timing---My (fine) WHITE Ranger embossing powder is grainy (big dry particles) compared to all their other colors. Result is "sketchy" finish, not nice and consistent thick white look. Something you've seen or a single bad jar? (Why would dry consistency be so different than other colors?) So far no answers. :)
I wonder if the jar or container is getting air in and might be messing with the consistency. If not possible, maybe it IS a bad jar. Is it old? I've also heard that it can go bad after a while.
Is it a new jar? I had a jar of Ranger Super Fine Detail embossing powder (I think it was white) that had large clumps in it, & didn't emboss well. As I'd just recently gotten it, I e-mailed Ranger to ask if that was normal. They said no, and sent me a new jar to replace it. If your jar is relatively new, I'd suggest contacting Ranger. They'll probably ask for a photo of the jar and/or powder. I think I had to send a picture of what the heat embossed results looked like. Anyway, they'd let you know what they need. You can find their contact info on their website - rangerink.com/pages/get-in-touch-with-us. Hope this helps! :)
I had this issue with some embossing powder once and I figured out it had got some water from my mister in it. I stirred it with a metal craft spoon against the jar and it helped a lot. Assuming you don't have a bad batch, that is.
I take it you removed the brush attachment (which is prominent in the illustrations at the link) to use the hair drying tool. I find it odd that it's a subscribe and save item, which implies you need to replace it at least every six months, if not sooner.
I have no idea why that hair drying tool would be on a subscribe and save option; they must have linked all toiletry items together with hair care. It's a non-consumable tool.
Stunning cards! I love how you balance the white space with the bright color; it gives your eyes a rest. Can you tell me what containers you use to store your embossing powder? Thanks for the inspiration to get out my alcohol inks that have been sitting patiently since Christmas!
Thank you so much for this Sarah, I really appreciate it! I am still looking for the "perfect" storage for my embossing powders balancing convenience with functionality. I don't recommend what I"m using in the video; it's a photo storage container and powder comes out all over.
I cannot fulfill this request as talking is how I explain things. Without talking there's no other way to say what I need to say. I might be able to sing it though...thats an idea. 😉 thanks for being here!
@@marypolancodesigns Good for you Mary. your channel and video. you do you, if she finds it boring, she has the option of clicking off ... nobody is making her watch. 😊

Awesome tips and cards! Will need to pull out the alcohol inks👍and most importantly… tip on the poster board!!!
Oh yes you will love it; it's the greatest!

This is a great tip to keep glue off my fingers! I get so frustrated with that and I have glue sticks that are useless for actual gluing.

I use a silicone brush (meant for clay modeling), peeling off the excess when dried :-).

Thanks so much! I just could NOT throw that away! lol
Great video Mary, thank you! Any tips on cleaning off the anti-static powder from dark cardstock? I always end up with a cloudy mess :(
Yes, after your embossing powder is melted and cooled, use a microfiber cloth to wipe the cardstock. It will come clean. My favorite is the white cloth from the Dollar Tree in the auto section.
pretty cards, love them!
OH thank you so so much!
So love your videos...aways learn so much..loved the galaxy background ❤️
Oh thank you so much for such a sweet compliment! Thank you!
Great tips, tfs
You are so welcome
Fantastic cards Mary 🥰 I love your alcohol ink backgrounds, your card designs and your hacks. I don't use alcohol ink ❤️ thanks for sharing your creativity Hugs xx
Thank you so much Joan! YAY
Great cards, Mary!!
Thank you so very much!
Bearly Art also has washi tape and I am also a big fan of their glue
Ooooh so good to know thank you!
More use the term fussy cutting. I sure would like to see more videos from you. I really enjoy them.
Awesome tip and correction thank you so very much!
I don’t use re-inkers. Just wanted to hang out with you. 😃
Yea! So glad you're here
Mary, have you switched your alcohol reinkers? If so, how? I've started a swatch book, but that's definitely one I cant figure out how to catalog.
Is that hello friend a die or a stamp? Is it from Taylored expressions? Haven’t had luck finding it but I love it!
Laura
Yes it's from Taylored expressions but pretty old; not sure they still sell it.
Great cards and hacks, Mary. Alas, I don't have alcohol inks or embossing powder.
Thanks so much for that! And no worries I'm sure you have lots of stuff you can play with still
Hi. I have some Arteza alcohol pens and some isopropanol (?) , No fancy, suitable paper bit I shall try it out some vellum and shiny cardstock just to see what happens.😅
❤
I'd imagine using a wide-cell natural sponge to add tacky glue for foil would produce the more organic effect that tacky ink offers.
Absolutely, such a great tip! Do you have a channel? You should; you're a brilliant hacker with crafting solutions!
@@andrealavigne7824 Thanks so much Andrea!
I had this issue with some embossing powder once and I figured out it had got some water from my mister in it. I stirred it with a metal craft spoon against the jar and it helped a lot. Assuming you don't have a bad batch, that is.
@@mamapillow8365 Thank u for kind response to my issue!
Mine died after 5 uses. Maybe that's why. 🙄

Plz less talk it can get boring
I cannot fulfill this request as talking is how I explain things. Without talking there's no other way to say what I need to say. I might be able to sing it though...thats an idea. 😉 thanks for being here!
Your reply so funny but would like to hear u sing it lol would be good entertainment
@@marypolancodesigns Good for you Mary. your channel and video. you do you, if she finds it boring, she has the option of clicking off ... nobody is making her watch. 😊
For everything someone loves, someone else doesn't like it. I love Mary's videos just as they are and enjoy her thorough explanations...some of us need it. Plus, it shows her personality that I love. I hope Mary keeps true to herself. Seems that most of us love her that way.
