It is called intermittent fasting. Trying to lose it all in a 10 fast is not good; especially for an older person.
I like these short videos!
Great information, Dr. Boz. Many Thanks for these wonderful video's..!!
Just wanted to say thank you so much for all your good advise and healthy living. You are amazing.
That’s why I just do IF. Everything in moderation.
Very helpful, thanks!
Great info,thanks
General rule of thumb if you’re fasting is if you start to feel like shit, eat something.
Couldnt have put it better myself
And reflect on the possible reasons. If I eat keto friendly foods before I do extended fast with a tablespoon of lots of healthy variety (ie 3 different types nuts), meat, heavy cream, green vege and generous butter I find I don’t feel sickly and weak doing 72 hour (with fasting salts) .
If I eat typical restaurant meal with family or yummy Cathy breakfast then try 72 hr I feel awful for 48 hours and shakey day 3. So now I prepare for it properly.
Carby breakfast not Cathy 😂
I call it ‘pre-loading my fast’
I’ve lost 15lbs in 16 weeks since I discovered fasting with Mindy Pelz and Dr Boz. My starting weight was 154lbs. I did it first for vanity (clothes) and weight. Then found my chronic nerve pain (of 2 years) stopped whilst fasting. Now I’m lowering my meds each week and seems to be working…
Some times you have to realize that your body is going to change. Healthy can be different things when we're much older.
I fast Monday and Tuesday every week. On Wednesday morning I always have the squirts. Never really thought anything about it. Even when I did my long fast I would routinely have mild diarrhea. But I always felt great.
At 66 I will only do 1 36hr fast a week on the back of two meals a day which are low carb the rest of the week. I weight train 3 times a week and try to be busy everyday for 4 hrs limited by osteoarthritis.
Hi, thanks for the great information.
If I fast 72 hrs weekly for 2 months, how many weeks do I have to wait to begin again fasting? (the 72hrs weekly)
Thanks!
Dr. Boz, I was wondering about mct oil. Should it be the one with c8c10c12 or c8c12? Thank you so much for your advice 🙏.
Hes got more willpower than I have. My only path to fasting is ketosis first.
That is a truthful mouthful.
Hello from East Tx
Fellow east Texan here.
They rolled a commercial right after the metabolic link video. Can you post it below in the comments section or in the description. I'd like to know the recommended tests. BTW I watched Dr. Greger do a talk on a vegan the died of a heart attack due to B-12 deficiency. I also have heard Dr. Jason Fung on the fasting and he was saying you can get gallstones if you are not careful. I am wondering if these tests you recommend include any of these risks if your not starting with proper nutrition or have a build up of cholesterol. Thanks again for another nugget of wisdom.
Dr. Boz. Can I exercise and weight lift to put the growth hormones to work for me?
I have been fasting three days a week for sometime now. But not consecutive days, Monday’s, Wednesday’s & Friday’s. First can you reach autophagy within a 24 hour fast? I only drink water & organic steam decaffeinated coffee during my fasts. But recently I began taking supplements each day, of stinging Nettle & mushroom gummies. Will those gummies break my fast?
Hi, when i am doing intermittent fasting more than 12hrs ,(skipping breakfast first meal @4pm) next day i feel very weak n sleepy and the day after that i will get very bad headache along with gastric problems stomach pain.everytime this happens, even though am on keto diet. Why its happening??? Please replyy
Can you do a special diet like keto while full-time breastfeeding? And how much water do I need to drink? Could you do a video? My weight is not bad, but apparently, I had stones in my gallbladder. I don't need surgery, but I want a healthy diet.
I was on the verge of being a diabetic 5 years ago. I started keto and started intermittent fasting shortly after learning this. Fast forward 5 years…I’ve worn a CGM now every few months, and my blood sugar level stays in the 50’s and 60’s for the most part, and will fluctuate up to 100 right after meals. I ate 2 pastries and some candy yesterday (very rare) expecting my sugar to skyrocket, and it only spiked up to 120 and went right back down. I was very surprised! Is this normal? 5 years ago it would’ve shot up to 300 plus, and wouldn’t have come back down to the 100 range for days.
The human body can heal itself, get plenty of sunlight, water and grounding, well done .
Your insulin works 💪 driving the sugar down either burning it or pushing it into the cell. Being fat adapted you're less likely to get super hungry and binge which would then bring you back to high sugars.
Your body would still have to use insulin to deal with that sugar and insulin spikes are not healthy. Watch some Dr. Jason Fung videos for information on this.
I did a 6-day sardine fast a couple of weeks ago. Towards the end, I was feeling a bit tired, recovery was getting worse, and I was cold. I had plenty of electrolytes. I'm hoping that there was some benefit from it but it is hard to tell.
6 days seems a bit too much. it's not too bad, as you were eating keto, pretty much. A lot of toxins in the cans though. However shouldnt be any damage what so ever.
@@multitablez7825 An occasional stressor isn't a bad thing. We're exposed to so many toxins on a daily basis that I'm not worried about the little bit in a couple of cans. At most, I was eating 3 cans of sardines a day. I agree it is not something to do on a regular basis. If I do it again, it probably will be a year from now. I also have plenty of muscle and stored energy so I wasn't in any danger of starving.
@@happydogg312 Your definition of fasting is incomplete. Per Merriam-Webster, 1 of the definitions is "to eat sparingly or abstain from some foods". There is some evidence to suggest that a sardine fast helps increase autophagy better than a wet fast.
I’ve just done a 72 hour fast which was fine; my blood sugars at the end though were 2.5mmo/L / 45mg/dL. I’ve no idea why? 🤔
I am 62 years young, have hypotyreose and high blodsugar and my colesterol is on the edge. Scould I fast.
18/6 5 days a wk. With a 42 hr fast( best Ive been able to do.😂)once a month.
I dont feel I need to fast mor than my eating window. Personally, what you eat is just as important. Fresh, whole foods, no preservatives, bad oils, sugars and very low carbs. Add 2 mile walk x 5 and weights 3x wk.
This has allowed me to lose and keep off 45 lbs and keep my labs normal . All very sustainable.
how’s your LDL level?
mine went up to 221😞
My LDL is also high. I've heard some things about this correlation, especially with athletic peeps. I had to convince my GP to recommend a CT scan of my heart to conclude I don't need statins. My heart had 0 oxidated cholesterol anywhere near it. I'm also very healthy and am wondering how fasting increases specifically LDL, AND if so what does that mean.@@jpdoc5722
Dr Boz, how will trulicity effect my fast? Is it a waste of time to try fasting while on trulicity?
I have been doing 1 meal a day sometimes 2 for a while but I'm doing okay but im getting like upset sometimes for just little things is this a deficiency
48hr per month is enough now I have done it weekly for a few months
So "8 consecutive weeks with a 72 our fast" is a 3-day fast, every 2 months. Is that correct?
It's a 3 day fast every week for 8 weeks.
I fast, I get constipated -- REALLY bound up. Drinking 8 - 12 glasses of water barely helps. Jogging helps. Hot tea helps. Massage of the perineum helps.
I had the same problem for years, even with psyllium husks. Now I take 2 teaspoons of chia seeds, soaked in water for 10 mins, mix with a little coconut cream, about 5 blueberries. It's a lovely desert and now I'm very regular
Magnesium is helpful.
@@Dana-op6ex Thanks -- It's actually Magnesium HYDROXIDE which doesn't get absorbed --all the other types have medicinal herbal values, but not in the gut. Rather than chemical, last resort not listed (my bad) I do fiber. I tolerate fiber. There's little gas but those hand grenades can loosen things up.
Try MCT oil...helps me greatly first thing in morning with my coffee
@@nunya2512 MCT absorbs too quick unless you're chugging gallons -- EVOO produces floating bricketts instead of sinkers. Like a horse, sprints plus hot coffee helps.
Can you confirm the fasting regiment you mentioned - one 72h fast every week for 8 weeks?
@@Andre-jg7gqYep, she wants us to buy that book. I understand, she needs to make money too.
Noticed that
Yes she has said that.
A living body is a work in progress.

Dr. Mindy Pelz recc. Fasting variations.
For the love of God, I am more confused as what to do now. I am screwed.
Fast 3 days a week for 8 weeks. Eat keto.
I wonder, if Tom had been supplementing potassium citrate, whether this would have happened. Potassium is sodium sparing, and sodium is potassium sparing. So, if potassium is maxed out, as it would be supplementing with potassium citrate, it gives a much larger margin for error with sodium.
*Disclaimer. Supplementing with potassium can be dangerous which is why potassium supplements often are only available in 99mg doses, yet humans have an RDA of 4700mg. Potassium chloride will elevate blood serum levels of potassium regardless of whether you need them elevated or not. Supplementing with potassium "citrate" however only makes the potassium "available" for uptake if it is needed, therefore supplementing with potassium citrate is much safer.
The primary reason for limiting potassium chloride supplements to 100mg is because a concentrated dose that sites in the stomach or gut can cause damage. Potassium citrate can be taken in higher amounts.
Whilst I agree with your comment in general terms, overdosing anything can be a problem, you are not going to have problems with potassium citrate if you don't take silly doses. Taking 4700mg of potassium would of course be a silly dose.
I currently take around 2,800mg of potassium citrate (900mg elemental potassium) through the day in long drinks of water because It reduces my pulsatile tinnitus. It has zero effect on my blood pressure and no heart issues. I've been doing that for many years.
Potassium chloride is not good to regularly supplement as it has been associated with lowering B12 absorption. Lite salt may not be a good idea.
@@trail.blazer I agree. I currently take about 1tsp per day which is about 2300mg, about half my RDA. No issues.
Ive been doing intermittent fasting for 9 years. Gradually i went from low carb to keto 18 months ago. Recently i did carnivore for 3 months. Ive always been healthy except for this year when i developed hyperthyroidism. Ive overdone it with the fasting? I wish people had warned me about this. I had searched on the internet and found nothing about the dangers. Also im 62 years old. Maybe fasting was too severe for my age? I really wish there was more warnings.
You wish people warned you about what? I’m 57 and and I’ve been doing intermittent fasting since August 2019. I recently started a weekly 40 hour fast and I’ve done that 42 weeks in a row so far. I don’t do keto or carnivore. I just eat a high protein/low carb diet and avoid processed foods and sugar for the most part. I workout 7 days a week for 30 minutes a day. I seem to be doing fine. Is it the IF or is it the keto or carnivore? Sounds like you were fine with just IF.
@@shelfcloud487 some content creators say fasting provides too much strain on the thyroid gland, especially 3 times a week for 36 hours. Well glad it's working for you.
@@adelinekeys6582 I get it that extended fasts may be a little much but just doing IF seems like what our bodies were designed to do. If you think about it, it was until the last hundred years or so that refrigeration, packaging and preservatives really came into play in a major way along with all the convenient cooking methods. People didn’t have access to food 24/7 along with microwaves/electricity/etc like we do now and probably practiced IF without even realizing it. I’m sure it was more common to go a day (or two) without food as well or maybe just snack on some jerky, dried fruits or hard candy. We’re just accustomed to all the modern conveniences and it’s not necessarily good for our health.
I’m not sure what you mean by 3x/week for 36 hours? That sounds like what I do once a week, but doing it 3 times. I don’t eat from 5pm Friday to 9am Sunday. So 40 hours. If I ate up to 9pm Friday that would make it 36 hours. That just sounds like alternate day fasting. I’m not sure how that could be so bad. Like I said, are you sure it wasn’t adding keto or carnivore that caused your issue?
I'm not at all sure what caused it but something went wrong. Maybe it was keto or low carb generally over a long period of time. I just wish you tube content creators would talk more about what could go wrong. STEPHANIEPERSON is about the only one addressing the negatives
@@adelinekeys6582 That’s definitely true. Almost everything you can find is about the positive aspect but I think it comes down to diet more so than fasting. If you’re getting proper nutrition then the fasting won’t be an issue unless taken to extremes.
Perform a 72 hour fast every week for 8 weeks or do Keto for 8 weeks and at the end, do a 72 hour fast? The former sounds pretty excessive….literally only eating 4 days a week.
I just do intermittent fasting and lately a weekly 40 hour fast.
Yep. That's why they call it fasting 😂
@@apriljohnson7447 lol….there’s no way that much fasting is good! I wish Dr Boz would clarify her statement: there seems to be a lot of comments about the same protocol.
Alternatively if you say "messed up" then its neither vulgar nor a curse. Let us bless and not curse.
Let us lead the world and not follow the world.
What if you get diarrhea starting at day 2 of a 72 hour fast?
In that case I would pull the plug. And then next time see if you can go 36, and so forth

I lost muscle doing just 16 hour intermittent fasting. I don't think it's safe for people over 60 who are active.
Eat
Why fast……I love food too much
How the Heck can you fast 72 hours when you are type 2 diabetic?
Yes you can. Start slow remove your processed food and sugary drink. Eat your 3 meals a day no snacks. Before you eat drink apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp in 8oz water. When you eat your meal start with fat or protein first eat your carbohydrates lasts. Eat until you feel full and stop. Do this for a few weeks and you notice dinner time you still feel full or not really hungry then skip dinner.slowly progressing to one meal a day. Keep your one meal before 2-3pm. Then you can progress to 36hrs, 48hrs, then 72hrs fast make adjustments when you feel comfortable moving yo the next level. But starting out with a 72hrs for diabetes will be a DISASTER you will failed best wishes
@@nphan3940 Thank you very much. I have gotten to a meal a day, with a small snack later. Still working on carbs though.
@@douglasbriel6103 if you have made it to one meal a day then you are there already just make a push when you are ready. Eat whole food like bacon brisket butter eggs you will feel full drinking 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar vinegar will make you feel fuller longer, eating carbohydrates last is to reduce insulin spike, if you are not hunger ask yourself why do you eat, you will answer your own question. Sometimes I want a snack I would eat pork rinds purchase from Mexican grocery store. Please remove all seed oil like canola oil vegetable oils etc use lard, tallow butter to fry your food. You will find the food tasted much better and you feel satiety rather just eating. I walk 3x a week I added a backpack about 10% of my weight to help burn calories as I walk and plan to increase the weight of the backpack as I progress but no more than 25% of my weight. After walking I would sprint and this had help me flatten my tummy. I am being doing this for over a year lost 23lbs back to my weight before I got married. My husband and son do IF and lost weight and keep it off and feel a whole lot healthier. Good luck my friend you will not regret the change.

Don't fast while on medications... big nothing burger here....
Are you supposed to stop taking regular medications during the sardine challenge? I'm taking Metformin, blood pressure meds and thyroid medication Levothyroxine. Dr. Boz never talks about this. I have heart valve leakage causing edema and thyroid nodules that Endocrine doc says remove and the ENT surgeon says no, my doctors don't believe in fasting, GI doc says its dangerous without any explanation, to just keep taking PPI for acid reflux and a low calorie diet, primary care is silent on keto and fasting,. But they keep raising and increasing my medications. The treatment for edema? Wear compression socks. My cardiologist says I'm stable no other advice other than keep taking blood pressure meds. I have multiple specialists and not one has any treatment for weight loss except low calorie diet, higher doses of medications, don't fast because it's dangerous, no comment on low carb diet, keto, just follow the American diet pyramid and exercise. No keto, no fasting because its dangerous. I'm on Medicaid, I don't have a choice in doctors.
Sounds like he needed a psychiatrist to me.
I THINK YOU MADE UP THIS STORY AND TOM NEVER EXISTED
I think your ideas are quite dangerous, all these big changes are not good for the body. You are oversimplifying everything and misunderstanding a lot. Whatever people like you advocate, fat people are going want to go that little big further for quicker results. Americans have a history of fast everything, "shoot first ask questions afterwards", "a fast buck", "fast food", etc. I say think first and take your time. If it takes 10 years to put the weight on don't try to lose it in 10 minutes.
