100% this. Im lucky I had an instructor just like that who focused on building confidence, letting me choose and drive independently and stepping in as needed. I apreciate so much that he showed that much confidence in me and it did help me relax and focus more. I made mistakes and he stepped in as needed but I learned better by making a mistake instead of being told how to do every little thing but not knowing why this way and not the other way... That's exactly my point, the pressure of a deadline doesn't help people learn. You're better off learning then booking a test, there are usually short notice cancellations available. If everyone did it this way I'm sure the waiting list wouldn't be more than a week or two for a test.

Great video once again Richard. As a fellow ADI for 27 years, I've seen these teaching fads come and go. It's good to have a system of teaching and I think every decent instructor has one. It may be what the DVSA suggest or it may have been adapted by the instructor. But as long as it facilitates learning and the pupil (customer) is happy with the progress they are making then great. I don't think I'm the greatest instructor in the world and I'm always trying to improve what I do to help myself and primarily my students. Sometimes I feel these acronyms can stifle learning as you're trying to fit everything into a specific box. I agree with you about the timed part of this tool.
I have my licence now, but when I was learning to drive, I used to watch your videos every day. Some of the things you explained (such as how having 3 legs would reduce the need for a handbrake) were so helpful in aiding my comprehension of driving techniques. Just wanted to stop by and say thank you, and that I am still learning new things from your videos.

I started to learn to drive at 40. It took me 11momths with 4 instructors and 3 attempts to pass. I think driving instructor must be there to help set goals. I didn't like my instructor asking me "what do you want to do today?" at the beginning of each lesson. Driving lessons should be structured like how we learn at school. Instructor should track the pupil's progress. Richard is an excellent instructor not just for his teaching skills, but also that he understands learners so well. I gained more confidence from this channel than with my first instructor. He was alright at the beginning. But it turned really bad around the time his mum got quite sick. Right before my 1st road test, I had the worst lesson with him. He stopped the car in the middle of the road asking me why I didn't indicate on time. He didn't warn me before I ended up on the freeway and he pressed the accelerator so hard. We were driving almost 90 on 80 speed limit road (Australia). And he blamed me for speeding. My confidence was shattered. I am not an anxious person but I found myself feeling very nervous the day before my driving lessons. I tried 3 other instructors after failing my 1st test. I decided to go with the instructor I felt most helpful and supportive. 6 weeks later I got my licence. Shop around if you can't have Richard as you Instructor 😄.
My instructor had a schedual and he picked 2 to 3 things a week to learn (as I was a fast and easy learner (note everyone Is different)) and he let me go at my pace and learn my way which was good. His timetabled structure of what I needed to learn and mark them off as I master each section helped me keep on track and pass quickly. After about 4 lessons he allowed me to drive my own car in lessons as I took my test in that car. I was pleased with his service he provided and thankfully it allowed me to pass after 30hrs of lessons with only 2 minors.

I never had a paid for, or "real" lesson, but the way my mum taught me was the best way possible I believe. She would say "drive to Nannies house" and let me do my thing. If I had any worries or troubles, I just had to say "uuuh" and she was there to help.
Your videos have helped me incredibly in my driving training and now help me to be a better driver... Without your videos I would still have such problems changing gears and driving off.
I commute 70-75km daily plus wherever I go in the weekend for years, I came here from the double clutch (didn't need but wanted to learn) and heel & toe video's to improve my smoothness but overall, this is top tier information. You're showing the mistakes that habitual drivers like myself get into by just cutting corners (no pun intended). My goal is to glide through gear changes and be faster overall. Keep up the great work, after hundreds of thousands of km's this is great to patch up the bad habits picked up over the years!
I really wanted to say thank you so much! I passed my driving exam today and your videos really helped me even though I drive on the other side of the road!
Every lesson my driving instructor goes through what we did last week and then says “ok we’ll do this today, or we will have a look at that today” which i really appreciate. but he also then at the end goes “is there anything else you want to look at specifically today” which i find helpful cause sometimes i wanna look at a manoeuvre i struggled with the week before so at least i have the opportunity to get that in. This tutorial helped me. I am a new driver! I have a permit. I am getting a few more driving lessons before my road test. I am a pretty good driver though. My driving is okay. I need a little help with steering the car. I need practice doing hand-over-hand steering! This Friday I have a driving lesson. I am going to keep trying to loosen up behind the wheel. My biggest problem is steering!
Totally agree had a driving instructor who pushed me to far before I felt ready, I ended up making lots of mistakes and stopped driving as it destroyed my confidence, new instructor is great and I am enjoying it again
We teach client-centered learning and that's all well and good but I have my way of teaching which makes the student more relaxed and try and have fun in the lesson and not put pressure on them to achieve goals.
I agree! Deadlines create such pressure on learners and glad I didn’t have any when I started learning. Great video! And I laughed so much when you put in the hoola-hoop picture! Hahaha
I have not been driving for over 9 months since my last lesson, up until now, I bought learner insurance on my dads car and I started practising, the first time was very difficult as I did not really know how the car responded to my foot when pressed the pedals, however I have watched a lot of your videos which helped me to manage with the stress (especially at startups and when stalling) I have been driving for the third time today and honestly I can say that I gained more confidence, mainly from your videos and the start-ups are not a problem for me anymore, I have a test booked for the 11th of feb but I dont feel confident enough so I am trying to get a cancellation at a later date, anyways after today I feel much more confident at driving thanks to you as I watch your videos before I go to sleep. You're a life saver, thank you so much Richard!!
I'm still learning to drive have failed 2 tests now I need to do my theroy again thanks to covid and the DVSA refusing to give any grace on the theroy tests. I've been learning to drive with family for a while but after my first test failure I decided to go with an instructor along side any driving I do with family. My instructor has been very good for me he is very patient And gone over various things time and time again as it's the only way I can get to grips with it along side your videos. My Instructor has improved my confidence and driving knowledge
Another fantastic video! Great points. Especially about the "Timed" aspect; pressing for time sounds like a recipe for disaster. The "T" should be for "Take your time (to learn and practice)." And I think that "let the public (customer) decide" is a much better approach than artificial metrics.
Smart goals are so stupid. They needlessly complicate things. Its just a new fad amongst educators who like the acronym and it's not limited to just driving instructors. You hit the nail on the head with the timed section as well
I've just passed my test, 3rd Time When I first learned my instructor had a set plan for the lesson until I had covered all aspects of the syllabus, at this point it was a point where me as a student is asked what I think could help me, most of the time I allowed my instructor to choose as I'm an indecisive person until my last test where I asked todo roundabouts specifically positioning as I failed the previous 2 for clipping curbs at roundabouts thank you so much Richard your videos really helped with my confidence and knowledge especially during lockdown when I first started to learn
Personally, I would say the SMART thing isn't the way, BUT, I see the reason for the client centred approach. I think rather than restricting to the SMART template, instead, having a conversation at the start of the lesson about things the pupil would like to cover is highly beneficial, and then linking these specific requests to the reccomendations and syllabus of the instructor is the best way. Doing it like that ensures the pupil gets the oppertunity to cover (or recap) topics they feel less confident on (even if the instructor thinks they are perfectly capable of it), as well as making progress with their driving. Obviously in some cases, the requests can't be met, but asking the student what they'd benefit from, along with SUGGESTIONS from the ADI as to what goals and topics would suit them in terms of next steps is the ultimate mix. There's no way in the world driving lessons should be totally controlled by the learner as they dont have the knowledge and expertise, and there's also no way that the goals should be set solely by the instructor. And these templates, like you say, do more harm than good! I think you've got the perfect approach to be fair, with your own teaching methods, that consistently get good results.
I totally agree to discuss the goals of the lesson at the beginning. The major problem I have is driving instructors being encouraged to get the pupil to set a time limit to achieve the goal. That's just an extra stress that's not needed. It's like baking bread, it's ready when it's ready.
@@ConquerDriving 100%. Rushed learning doesn't help anyone. Added pressure, less comprehensive. Everyone has their own pace. This is also why I fundamentally disagree with people quoting the DVSA average lesson hours at around 40. This makes people think if they do it with less that they're not going to be test ready, and make people who take longer think they're no good, or that they're not being taught properly. Timescales are not a good thing. Maybe loose time targets may be beneficial(eg we want to have improved to some extent over the course of this lesson), rather than set time limits (you need to be 100% with this topic by the end of next lesson).
Good points, and excellent overall. Wish the Irish drivers had half the organisation, most of em are fairly diabolical. In Ireland the learner driver is obliged to pay 80 euros to book a test, but if he / she has not had 12 lessons with a certified instructor the test is cancelled and they lose the 80 euros ! Then......if after taking 12 (minimum) lessons the learner cannot take the test for six months because the test backup line is very long, he / she must take a further 12 lessons !
alright, tomorrow I have an exam. Write me back some motivating phrases:))) i don't say that I pray because I am not good at controlling a car or a lack of knowledge, I just don't want to fail because here, in Lithuania all roads are massively snowy and lines are completely hidden. Another thing - I can't see the curb even though I adjust the right mirror. I hope that everything will be just fine:Dd
@@ConquerDriving I PASSED!!!! Mostly used learnt techniques from your videos, including parking in reverse, gas/clutch control, start going uphill and so on... "Now prove that the Internet is not useful:D"
8:00 prices don't go up? How does it work? Am I too Argentinian to understand that concept? About instructors/learning... my dad taught me, he just taught me the basics (gas, clutch, gears, basic guidelines), and then it was more like driving a lot, building myself experience, answering me the questions I had and correcting my mistakes. This was great to get me a lot of confidence in my driving skills in general. But a lot of things I didn't learnt in that way, I still can't parallel park, I struggle in small parking slots, and I drive a lot by common sense. You talking about roundabouts, here we also have lots of them but never thought them as something difficult, I just think them as another corner. I would probably struggle a lot if I do the UK driving test Btw, I think smart goals in driving work for getting confidence and practice with some things you already knew or to incorporate good habits. For example, I was given for a week a garage to park my car (because my neibour went on vacations). I used it everyday to practice reverse parking in a narrow space there. But it wouldn't have worked if I didn't knew how to drive, basics of parking, having watched your videos of ways to do it.
To be fair they were quite expensive to begin with so they could afford not to go up. The garage for a week is an exampke of motivation to do it more often. People taking driving lessons rarely can decide to do more lessons due to time and money so a time limit only puts them under pressure.

@@ConquerDriving i was joking because here we have a +40% inflation anually since I can remember, thats why I said about it is shocking to me thinking in other countries it isn't that way.
I believe in a 3 stage process. A new driver needs instructing as they don’t know what they don’t know. As experience grows and a good set of basic skills are understood then coaching can happen. Then there needs is the independent driving when the student is allowed to make mistakes and the instructor helps them to reflect on what happened and how to prevent it happening again.
Totally agree with all you say. A competent ADI should be able to assess the teaching method that best suits the learner rather than have a formulaic one size fits all approach imposed on them.
Totally agree with you on the Time Specific objective.. First heard of the SMART objectives in 2012 at uni course but they being aware that some past the driving test 1st time and some others the 5th or 10th time is a good indication that being time constrain in achieving the objective might not work well in learning to drive! I wonder if you ever thought of making a video on priority at junctions.. or perhaps you have already made one and I'm just too lazy to look out for it ;) Also, I think you might be interesting to make a video on medical conditions that need to be disclosed to DVLA.. I work with patients with Dementia and giving up driving is not something that we ever being prepared for..
I was thinking about that, but many others have done it first. I work 6 weeks ahead and the new highway code was only "officially" announced 3 days before the change.
Do you train pdi's for their part 3? Perhaps you should, your amazing at your job and so much of everything you say is logical and makes sense and you have a brilliant way of explaining things.
Thank you. It's not something I'm interested. I hate the tick box standards check and I want as little to do with it as possible. It shouldn't be about ticking boxes, it should be about helping people how ever they need the help.
Unfortunately drive learning in my country isn't as good as the UK and it's easy to get a driving licence even with a few hours of practicing (I got mine after 7h hours of driving) So most of the learning I did it after getting my license using my car with the helps of your instructions ,setting achievable goals without putting a time limit I just trie to improve , and when i feel like i get it, i move to the next goal
Great video! You've had a big impact on my learning process. I passed my test a month ago with zero faults and only had the courage to grab my dad's car to give it a go yesterday. I've been panicking for the last few weeks due to having passed my test in a diesel car and having a petrol at home, but as soon as I decided to try it, I figured it out and it wasn't so bad. I ended up driving for 30 miles without even noticing!
My instructor has a pretty hands off approach, which is good because we spend virtually no time idle and talking on the side of the road and more time driving, which is good in my opinion, although I have had to bring up my weaknesses as I'm getting very close to my test. I know my weaknesses which are knowing speed limits on some roads and the reverse bay, and I havent been taught the show me tell me questions yet, these are things which I feel I need to bring up. other than that I think I should pass.
Can you do a video on the changes to the highway code giving your opinion and possibly helping people who have anxiety with these potentially daft changes if any. Cheers if you can 👌
My instructor suggests not to book a test instead even I've passed the theory test and already had 10 lessons. The earliest available testing date will be 6 months later and I can take two lessons per week if necessary. Perhaps, I am a slow learner but I will want to get my license as soon as possible.
There are usually short notice cancellations available, so when you're ready you will likely be able to get a test within a week if you look regularly. Especially at the moment as so many people are cancelling within a week of the test.
Hi sir, am a driving school instructor for about 12 years now, my experience is as an instructor you create an awareness of the environment and to make your student know he or her direction in good time.
I cannot remember how many time I've been through this kind of situation: my instructor: "how long have we stopped at this red light?"/"How much do you want your licence?" me: 15 to 20 seconds / I want it quite a bit (if I don't answer but only ask what's wrong,he will just ask again and again) Sorry, what did I do wrong/ what did I miss? my instructor: silence or sign, and said "never mind, leave it" or "just do it your way" my stress 😵💫😵😱😱😱 May be it's time to change a instructor 😂

I hope u understood the question😀.. ur vids r really really helpful to me.. thnk u soo much..
Smart goals never worked for me and I personally think it's overused and overrated (as in, literally everything in my university and professional life is smart, smart, smart, smart, smart). It's an acronym people like simply because it sounds smart. It's superficial imho. That said, I would change 'timed' to 'timely review' to make it an evolving goal. Do they feel like they're making good progress? Maybe add a bonus target. Are they lagging behind somewhere? Perhaps more work and thought can be put into that area. At least it would still meet the 'smart' acronym.
Can’t believe they’re using SMART that’s for business not learning and education! Why don’t they talk to teachers about how to teach people! Coaching is very excellent teaching method but it doesn’t mean the pupil setting all the goals it’s a team effort between pupil and instructor. Questions are vital as we always misread and misjudge if we try to guess!
That's a hard question to answer. I like to live with new cars but I'm interested in old cars. Although I would very much like to try a Gordon Murray T. 33 with a manual gearbox.
I can't blame you for criticising SMART ( acronym, noun ) goals...they are a big plate of bullshit and chips in any context...a HR and training consultant meal ticket at the expense of human progress. However, smart (adjective) goals...now that's how we should all do things. SMART is not smart.
Anyine who can do something can show someone else how to do what they know. There was never a moment when I realised this. But with time I got better at driving but mostly better at teaching.
Thank-you for talking sense I hate having to teach a certain way. I never do hour lessons so cramming everything into 1 hour for the standards check is impossible. Standards check is ridiculous. everyone learns and teaches differently

That's great to hear, good luck with your test!
Another great video, Richard! I really appreciate your perspective and I agree.
Passed my driving test on Monday. this channel helped me a lot. Thanks!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
That's great news, congratulations on passing!
😇😇😇
You hit the nail on the head with the timed section as well
I am Turkish and I passed the driving test at once by watching your videos, thank you 👍
Congratulations on passing!
Nailed it in this clip by the way kept them comming please you are helping so many people ☺️👍
I think youre very realistic Richard thats how it should be thanks a lot for everything
I want to drive a car but I am not in a hurry to do the lessons because I am taking my own time.
I've just passed my test, 3rd Time
When I first learned my instructor had a set plan for the lesson until I had covered all aspects of the syllabus, at this point it was a point where me as a student is asked what I think could help me, most of the time I allowed my instructor to choose as I'm an indecisive person until my last test where I asked todo roundabouts specifically positioning as I failed the previous 2 for clipping curbs at roundabouts
thank you so much Richard your videos really helped with my confidence and knowledge especially during lockdown when I first started to learn
Congratulations on passing!
Passed my test second time today mainly thanks to you, I learned more from you than my instructor haha
Congratulations on passing.
I fully agree with you that driving lessons should not be timed.
Couldn't agree more with your points in this vid.
SMAT goals is the opposite of SQUAD goals.
I've already pass my DMV practice test awhile ago.
I wish you the best of luck for tomorrow! Focus on the present, don't dwell on the past or worry about the future.
I would probably struggle a lot if I do the UK driving test
Btw, I think smart goals in driving work for getting confidence and practice with some things you already knew or to incorporate good habits.

Yes I agree, I call the three stages: talk through, prompted and solo.
Spot on Mike
I actually had to do assignment regarding SMART Goals today for the university.
Totally agree with all you say. A competent ADI should be able to assess the teaching method that best suits the learner rather than have a formulaic one size fits all approach imposed on them.
My driving instructor didn't make me do more than one mock test before my test. That made it harder for me to deal with my anxiety
Totally agree with you on the Time Specific objective.. First heard of the SMART objectives in 2012 at uni course but they being aware that some past the driving test 1st time and some others the 5th or 10th time is a good indication that being time constrain in achieving the objective might not work well in learning to drive!
I wonder if you ever thought of making a video on priority at junctions.. or perhaps you have already made one and I'm just too lazy to look out for it ;)
Also, I think you might be interesting to make a video on medical conditions that need to be disclosed to DVLA.. I work with patients with Dementia and giving up driving is not something that we ever being prepared for..
This video may help ruclips.net/video/IqNW0IrOjzE/видео.html
To be fair my driving instructor used the smart approach and it really worked
Love your videos- you talk great sense
You should make a video about the new Highway Code!
Unfortunately drive learning in my country isn't as good as the UK and it's easy to get a driving licence even with a few hours of practicing (I got mine after 7h hours of driving)
So most of the learning I did it after getting my license using my car with the helps of your instructions ,setting achievable goals without putting a time limit
I just trie to improve , and when i feel like i get it, i move to the next goal
Where are you based Richard? And how much are your lesson prices?
Hi, there are details on my website, but at the moment I'm not able to take on any new pupils. Thank you though.
Please do a video
on how to drive
a manual car without tacometre
Love from pakistan
I mention that in this video ruclips.net/video/Wrp5v8nVPHU/видео.html
Your the governor, so impressive
Great video! You've had a big impact on my learning process. I passed my test a month ago with zero faults and only had the courage to grab my dad's car to give it a go yesterday. I've been panicking for the last few weeks due to having passed my test in a diesel car and having a petrol at home, but as soon as I decided to try it, I figured it out and it wasn't so bad. I ended up driving for 30 miles without even noticing!
For all who might have read my comment, I apologize for my incorrect name, it is Richard Fanders not R. Handers.
Thank you.
Good luck!
@@ConquerDriving Thank you, much appreciated.
Can you do a video on the changes to the highway code giving your opinion and possibly helping people who have anxiety with these potentially daft changes if any. Cheers if you can 👌
I may do, thank you for the suggestion.
@@ConquerDriving Thanks for your suggestion
Awesome vid👍🏻
Hi sir, am a driving school instructor for about 12 years now, my experience is as an instructor you create an awareness of the environment and to make your student know he or her direction in good time.
First comment
I cannot remember how many time I've been through this kind of situation:
my instructor: "how long have we stopped at this red light?"/"How much do you want your licence?"
me: 15 to 20 seconds / I want it quite a bit (if I don't answer but only ask what's wrong,he will just ask again and again) Sorry, what did I do wrong/ what did I miss?
my instructor: silence or sign, and said "never mind, leave it" or "just do it your way"
my stress 😵💫😵😱😱😱
May be it's time to change a instructor 😂
I usually recommend changing until you finding one that's works for you. But it's hard to do that these days as it's hard to find an instructor.
@@ConquerDriving Called many driving schools and got lucky. Cost is that I need to wake up at 6:30 for many days in the next few weeks. Feels worth it 😄
Hey there Richard👋.. just recently got my license in India and I have a small doubt regarding balancing the clutch nd accelerator.. for eg if thr is a hump on the road v normally slow down nd thn put it in first gear nd thn balance the clutch nd accelerator until v get past the hump.. now my qsn is can v do this same process in 2nd gear? Because wen v r travelling in 4th gear nd suddenly thr is like a rough road or smthn.. v dont hve to go too slow to be in 1st gear but v gotta accelerate nd decelerate many times.. I hope u understood the question😀.. ur vids r really really helpful to me.. thnk u soo much..
You can do it in second gear also, but you may wear the clutch more when trying to start in second gear or when riding the clutch in second gear.
I have a question just to be sure, when it comes to your 'staying slow in manual car' video does the same rule apply to driving a manual in reverse?
Yes, it's the same.
Or just do what works and not worry about acronyms 😉
Great video thank you
Hi, I would like to recommend a funny idea. What about making a reaction video on one of those "Idiots in cars" :D
Thank you for your suggestion. I'm not sure if it is something for me but I'll look into it.
@@ConquerDriving It is only for entertainment purposes
So the instructor should not be getting me to set my own goals or asking me what I want to do?
That's my opinion, not what should or shouldn't happen. The video is more the time aspect of the smart goal.
Great vid 👍 fully agree
Can’t believe they’re using SMART that’s for business not learning and education! Why don’t they talk to teachers about how to teach people! Coaching is very excellent teaching method but it doesn’t mean the pupil setting all the goals it’s a team effort between pupil and instructor. Questions are vital as we always misread and misjudge if we try to guess!
Really good video
What’s your favorite car that you would like to drive?
That's a hard question to answer. I like to live with new cars but I'm interested in old cars. Although I would very much like to try a Gordon Murray T. 33 with a manual gearbox.
Hello sir,
Can you please help me to find out, can we use car for ADI part 2 test having rear car windows tinted. Thanks
The car needs to abide by the law when it comes to tints.
❤️
Do you teach driving in Norfolk?
I'm sorry, I only teach in Colchester.
@@ConquerDriving I will come and see you once done my DvLA exam ♥️
I can't blame you for criticising SMART ( acronym, noun ) goals...they are a big plate of bullshit and chips in any context...a HR and training consultant meal ticket at the expense of human progress.
However, smart (adjective) goals...now that's how we should all do things.
SMART is not smart.

When did you realise you're skilled enough to become a driving instructor?
Anyine who can do something can show someone else how to do what they know. There was never a moment when I realised this. But with time I got better at driving but mostly better at teaching.
Let me know which car you are using?
He drives a 3 door 2013 SEAT Leon.
2014 SEAT Leon fr 1.4 TSI 140 SC
@@ConquerDriving I must have read the plate wrong, great car though. Reliable and powerful with a nice and slick interior.
Thank-you for talking sense I hate having to teach a certain way. I never do hour lessons so cramming everything into 1 hour for the standards check is impossible. Standards check is ridiculous. everyone learns and teaches differently
I agree with you, I think it should be a safety standards check not a teaching standards check.
