He said he wrote Will as hetero until he wrote the line "Is Hannibal in love with me" and then he said sexuality is fluid. I take that to mean that Will considered himself to be heterosexual until he was confronted with the fact that Hannibal is in fact in love with him, and that fact opened up new possibilities for Will. Bryan showed pretty explicitly throughout the series that Will was drawn to Hannibal, often despite himself, and it makes sense to me that a person who thinks of themselves as straight wouldn't know how to label unexpected same sex attraction. As a bisexual person it was confusing for me when I first realized I experienced same sex attraction to know how to label it because I had never experienced it before and it didn't feel like the attraction I had felt toward the opposite sex. I can see Will having a similar experience.

Its definatrly not sexual it's a more emotional Batman and Robin relationship. They both need each other for meaning. Why can't men have a close relationship where they truely admire each other without it being labelled as a gay thing. There’s definitely that whole Batman-Robyn, dynamic, but as a gay guy that’s had very non-sexualized close friends with straight guys, and my own non-murderous version of Hannibal and Will … my jaw dropped in disbelief when I first watched the show because that sexual tension was off the effing chart and Without any of the will-grace camp, or the show disrespecting either character. There’s plenty of ambiguously gay duos in TV, but never with these guys depth and intensity.
Think of all the people who might have lived if they just banged it out in season 1.
