For a guy who doesn't like to play bass, Carlos fucking rocks. His basslines on TOTBL and Antics are smooth and crispy. Guy had a hell of a lot of talent.
In retrospect, he was probably uniquely talented *because* he didn’t like bass. I’ve noticed that when creative people feel limited or even trapped by the limitations of the budget, gear, manpower, etc. at their disposal, they “optimize” their work to the limitations of the hand they’ve been dealt, and sometimes, beautiful things happen as a result.
So I started playing bass in punk bands not taking it seriously until I heard this song specifically Mr Dengler's bass playing. I cannot stress enough how unorthodox his lines are. He's a lead guitar player and plays the bass not like a bass player but like a lead guitarist hence why the bass sounds the way it does.
I can't believe he didn't like playing tbh, you can't write lines like that on sn instrument you dislike. Sounds like he said this as a cop out after regretting leaving the band lol
@@SanchezS1998 100% the truth. When I was a child, I became a very natural, and very talented Violin player. The fact was I was forced by parents and I HATED the Instrument. I dreamed of owning a set of drums but we were very poor and school only had Mariachi Orchestra which I also did not like.
And that's exactly why he was the bassist! He was actually a guitar player and didn't like to play bass _that much._ Daniel (the guitarist) was looking for a bass player for his band and he invited Carlos because "he looked like a bass player". He accepted and the rest was history.
This is crazy, they start playing the initial notes of the riff and no one makes a sound. Six months later they're huge and that riff makes the crowd go nuts!! Very cool to see this. And one of the best songs of that decade fo sho.
They've started wearing formal wear for the concerts to show that they were taking music seriously, and to differentiate themselves from other bands. Why do I find this little fact so awesome?
That wasn't the reason why actually and i thino the real reason is even cooler. I believe they initially got together as a band because they all shared a similar taste for fashion and they naturally kept up their formal wear when they made it big and it became part of their look. If i remember correctly, the bassist was mistaken to be interested in the band or something because he dressed similarly but thats just how he dressed lol but i might've gotten a little mixed up but yeah i love how they dress
They're all great but really I sometimes just focus on the drums in amazement. I really don't know anyone that plays like this. It's not typical at all. He's doing his thing, really everyone is doing their thing, but it just goes together so well.
I was a little fucking kid when this happened, i cant believe this song is from 2002 and im listening to it almost 13 years later, i can't believe is still sounding mighty. This music must last FOREVER.
+Luna joy I know. I feel so sad. I wish I could go back in time and start over. It's raining today and I was thinking about "Stella was A diver and she Was Always Down." It says Stella was swallowed up in the manhole cover. I feel like that. 14 years I know, its forever now.
This video is honestly legendary. How many bands have live performance videos of one of their best songs from way before they were considered popular or anyone knew the song at all?
the only song he strummed a chord in on the bass was stella, and it's for one very small portion of the song. he never strums a single chord in this bassline or any other bassline.
BEST BAND EVER. I’ve reviewed and listened to it all, yet I am coming back to this, for there isn’t anything better than this out there and there will never be.
I saw Paul and the boys years ago in Ottawa and it was one of my first concerts in my early 20s. The venue was small and tight like this one and it was probably one of the best shows I've been to.
the reason why carlos was so evidently content here was simply cause they were barely starting out, this was like the beginning basically when they started to tour and stuff, eventually that just sort of got to him and later down the road years later like I'm talking our love to admire interpol, by then i believe he felt alienated from it all and was ultimately burnt out. thats how i see it.
i can't see why a lot of interpol's fanbase can't be reasonable about it. i love him, but making music is an often emotionally demanding job just like any other, and people change over the years.
i actually like the sound of this more than the regular album version. the way the guitars build up in the beginning is so satisfying to hear and the way he sounds like he’s suffocating when he sings is just so perfect
2018 and this is still just great to imagine being there and listening to the first riff without having idea how huge it would become. Lucky the ones who can watch amazing artists being born like this!
at the start, paul says "Some vocals, Harley, please." I've watched this too many times not knowing what he was saying even though I had heard of Harley.
Oh Paul, *"But you're so young,* *You're so young,* *You look in my eyes,* *So young, so sweet, so surprised,* *You look so young like a daisy in my lazy eyes..."* time flies :')
4.18: Paul points the microphone to the invisible man behind the scenes. These delicate and funny gestures are almost never missing during his performances.
They say that Carlos D. quit the bass because he had always hated it. I believe this is solid proof that, what has been said is false. Look at him. Flipping look at his movement. You can't hate the bass and move like that. Impossible.
MrjiimmyTARD he got tired because interpol has/had a lack of creativity on bass lines And sam (probably in 2010) told that interpol will never need a bass in the future, so that probably hurt carlos in many ways to, finally, left interpol in that year
He grew up playing regular guitar, and never really played or even owned a bass guitar. He only picked it up because the other members needed a bass player. That being said, he is a badass bass guitarist.
I was caught off guard by how great this song/album was bc no one has yet to sound as unique as Interpol. And Paul Banks is as good as it gets, vocally etc.

this is how a bassist must look like
@@Floating.Point. He was a great bassist, too, so I guess it was a decent decision for the music even if Carlos didn't like it.
The bass on this song is quite possible the greatest I've ever heard, and it's the main reason I fell in love with this song.
Completely agree.
For someone who didn't like playing bass, yeah
bass and the drums
@Andres Valle the outro of PDA Is orgasmic
Fun fact: the bass player quit interpol because he didn't like the instrument. He decided to pursue a career in acting.
This is crazy, they start playing the initial notes of the riff and no one makes a sound. Six months later they're huge and that riff makes the crowd go nuts!! Very cool to see this. And one of the best songs of that decade fo sho.
I thought exactly the same.
How amazing would it have been to stumble upon this unknown band who played a set of one of the great albums of the 21st century
Because no one knew them back then, when i listen a new song that i like live i pay attention the whole time.
1:29 even Paul is like “how does he do that?”
it's one of the best moments for sure
so true carlos is so good

Bring back Carlos!!!!!!!
They look and play so natural together in such a small space.
I was there. Drove down from Iowa City. Amazing show. The stage was so small.
congrats, extremely torn this was three days before being born so i couldnt make it too
That explains why the 3 Axe players look like lightly packed sardines.
Everyone: "the bass this... " "the bass that..."
Me: "aah!! The drums!"
YESSS
both
My mind blew when I listened & payed attention to the drums. Instantly went to my drums and tried to play the groove.

Appreciating the fifth member on keys that truly brings that atmospheric vibe to Interpol 🙌🏻 love this band man
Yep.
addicted to interpol, can't believe i didn't give them an actual listen until now -.-
Yep, you missed out on a lot. Interpol from 2002 to 2005 was something not everyone can claim to have witnessed in person.
