I thought they got lucky on the black album,this was during the grunge era I was there,so they fit in with that time period,if they had did that fast stuff like their previous albums,it would have failed,,I was born in 1965,so I've seen the time changes in music,from Elvis Jimi and the Rolling stones to Motley Crue,Ratt and Nirvana and Soundgarden, Lots of great music during those decades,But as I look back religiously,I wasted my life chasing a ghost star,just wasted years..Iron Maiden:Caught Somewhere In Time....

I spent an hour matching the tone on my little Blackstar with eq pedals in front and in the fx loop, and finally settled on a plexi pedal set a little dark. Lotta fiddling to get the sound with the wrong amp, guitar and everything else :)
I could have just used one of the sims on my computer, but I felt like some real vacuum tubey analoginess.
I have that same amp he has (if it is the Mk100 MKII) and I bought the Sad But True patch from Juca Nery’s website and it sounds EXACTLY like the album - it blows me away.
Thanks for the video, Marty! Always wanted to play that song. Sucks that you need to tune down a whole step but Kickstart My Heart is also in the same tuning and it’s a great second song to jam after this 🤘🤘
Marty is my favorite guitar teacher because he's really patient and easy-going, he has a "have fun with it" attitude and I love that because I'm not trying to impress anyone with my playing, I'm just trying to have fun. And Marty doesn't always play things 100% accurate but that's OK because I just want to have fun when I play, not play half a dozen scales just to play 1 riff. I have learned 90% of the songs that I know now from him. Thanks Marty :)

A lot of old guys love to talk trash about the Black Album, but this is without a doubt one of (if not the) heaviest songs they ever made. The whole album is one of the heaviest they ever made. People complain that they aren't playing fast on most of the songs. But playing fast isn't what makes a song heavy.
My 2nd or 3rd favorite album from them. Ride the Lightning will stay my favorite, but The Unforgiven is my favorite song of theirs.

Could you specify what settings your amp is on? I have the exact same one and would love to roughly replicate your sound
That super deep sound is partially due to pickup choice, I can get a similar tone with EMG pickups using either the neck pickup or a mixture of the two
Dude. Been waiting on this tutorial so long that i learned by tabs and then forgot most of it. Lol i basically just remember thats its one of the only Metallica songs tuned to D standard.
Great lesson - thank you Marty! You’ve been insanely helpful and taught me almost everything I know. The only thing I would ask is making sure you’re telling us which tuning the song is in at the beginning of the lesson. Sometimes you leave that out. But I can’t really complain - love you man

@@Rossy1995 like the looper that you play something and it loops so you can play over that? i got one it works well but newer models have a certain plug for the loop pedal and i dont know alot of distortion pedals but ive tried a few and nothing has beat my first pedal which is the digitech grunge distortion i use it for metal mainly mostly metallica and it kicks ass compared to every other pedal ive tried they go for about $40-50 online

Boost the bass and treble, cut most of the mid, and put the destortion or whatever you are using up to 11!! Lol..
You can get it real close with an old korg afx1500g if you mess with it a bit..
(They made me do a Metallica style gig setup at sound-tec / music collage when I was young and I had chose to play enter sandman)

Dear Marty, I have bought a guitar about a week ago and learn exclusively based on your videos, because they're the most informative and helpful among all others I have seen so far. Great insight into the details and how to play them, repeating them slowly and quickly. Amazing. Based on your videos I have learned pretty successful the steps in "Ace of Spades", the very beginning of "Nothing else matters" AND! I learned the base intro chords of this song already within 2 hours and exceeded all my own bravest expectations! Many many thanks to you for your job!

Also, you could easily do a lesson on This Means War by Avenged Sevenfold because of how similar it is to this on the guitar side of things. Most of the main parts are the exact same. @@maxscardanelli6185 I actually really like Avenged Sevenfold. This Means War is obviously unoriginal (and pretty bland), but they have some tracks that sound good to me. Off the top of my head, A Little Piece of Heaven, Bat Country, and The Beast and the Harlot are my absolute favorite songs of theirs.

Great stuff. I personally like incorporating the quasi-staccato way (ending string ringing with leftover L.H. fingers) that Hetfield plays the second and third D5s each time thru the primary riff. Most folks just classically-R.H.-palm-mute.
