One of the things I find odd about B5 is you hear characters referring to carrier groups but I don't recall any specific on screen ship classes ever being identified as dedicated carriers. There were some in the tabletop games like the Poseidon but never any I recall in the TV show. And unfortunately B5 never got any licensed games beyond one small Star Fury shoot em up with the show's CD guide or something.

As far as I remember that one reference in show is the only one, both the carriers were made for the tabletop game. Posiodon was a pretty nice mini, I saw a few when they first released, think they've been long out of production sadly

Supercarriers like Poseidon class supossed to be included in Earth civil war story arc but in the 90s CGI were bloody expensive and production cost for animating those behemots were to much so they stay with smaller vessels that they already created in 3D and animated like Nova, Hyperion or Omega.
If I remember correctly this is also the reason that none of the ships that have rotating sections (like Omega) do not deploys it fighters cobra-bay style like Babylon 5 does (by ejecting fighters through sheer power of 1G acceleration form rotation of section). Instead we see on screen launching fighters from they frontal docking bays one after another, while the cobra-bay style could launch all (or most of) fighters at once. It was to expensive to animate this back then.
Poseidon class carriers exists in universe during civil war arc but they were sent off screen with explanation that president Clark send them on far away missions to keep in line most valuable outer colonies and protect borders of the Earth Alliance.

I like the ship alot the only problem I have with it is the added mass would really stress the engines which are from Omega and Nova and think it needs at least two more thrusters like the Warlock but regular in the case of the Poseidon class

I think in The future of Babylon 5 series, The Earth Alliance will actually become the number one super power over shadowing the Minbari Federation, as in Lost Tales, the Centauri Republic think the EA is the obstacle preventing them from returning to the golden age not the Minbari

It's certainly possible. The Humans have a drive and motivation to push forward; something unique most other species seem to lack. The Minbari may have become less militaristic under the leadership of the Worker Caste and instead focus more on infrastructure and developing their colonies.

@@JH24821in the books the rule of the worker caste was actually beneficial for the warriors as it actually solved the stagnation caused by how stubborn the warriors were.

I see Babylon 5 content or Poseidon carrier: I like 🙂
not as beautiful as Akira, Omega or Explorer class but still.

I just got how small numbers of fighters are carried withing such huge vessels. Like, why just 96 for ship at almoust 2km long? This thing looks like it could carry houndreads of them. Simple WW2 Aircraft carriers could carry even 60 fighters, and they were only in range of 300 meters at best! From what I can see it should be able to carry at least 36 in one department(this sections extending from main body). There is 8 such departments so at least 288 fighters!

I always thought 96 Furies seemed a little low for a 2km ship compared to modern carrier esp when the multi-role Omega holda 36

I figured it's due to the carrier having dedicated repair bays and workshops to fully service the fighters those does take up quite a bit of space, but useful in longevity of the fighter. And if you have dedicated workshops, you can put together new fighters onboard the ship if you have enough spare parts (and sometime cannibalizing fighters too wrecked for full service)

We really, really need a B5 tactical Ship combat game similar to Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock.
Imagine how glorious would that be! Also just think of all the potential for expansions with sheer number of races in the B5 universe!
Any ideas on how we can make that happen?

I think WB needs to see if they can make money on that type of game. If they can they will allow it to be made.

There is an alpha version of a Babylon 5 ship simulator that was being worked on in the late 90s thats online, but it would be glorious to have a Babylon 5 game right with. Especially with the graphics we have now.

I wish we would've seen This in the show.
Because looking at the history of the earth alliance it's something they definitely would've had.
Though maybe few in number you could see These as support and command and control ships

Love your vids man, but i got to ask something. Dont the scale in B5 seem a bit off to you?
I mean, a Starfury is what? 10 meters long, 7 high and 15 wide? Thats not small, but not much bigger than any other starfighter in Starwars or something, and the ships in B5 are massive, and decently boxy as well, which means that they got quite a big internal volume.
Even if they only have 3 decks given over to fighters (60 m high in total) they can be easily 3-500 meters long and 150 meters wide. They should be able to house several hundreds of fighters in there, not less than a normal ISD, which is a lot smaller but with comparable fighters in size.

I agree. Majority of the ships within the Babylon 5 universe sheer size can be hard to comprehend, but I think they tried to design their ships to be as realistic as possible compared to other scifi shows. I remember reading an article stating that the reason why Babylon 5 ships are so big is due to the length of time they are deployed. They are designed To be completely self-sufficient for 6 months to a year which requires tons of equipment and storage to keep a crew of over 1000 crew members comfortable for that length of time. 🤷‍♂️

I remember a video discussing the scale of ships in between sci-fi universes. One factor they noted was the other universes had magic technology to resolve problems. In a United Federation of Planets do you need to store food, water, spare parts when you have replicators as the ultimate 3-D printers? B5 ships doesn't have shields, but armor which will bulk up a ship a bit.
For what Babylon 5 wants their ships to do, they probably are sized in a realistic manner.

The RPG game did say the same thing. Earthforce ships were big box shaped ships because we did not have gravity systems. Except thrust was used. Omaga class were the first to have spin to make gravity 24/7.

Lets not forget that EA warships, Destroyer class and above have armor that are up to 15 ft thick. The most of any alien navies.

Unlike just about every other race is Babylon 5, Humanity's ships while interesting in their designs, always felt generic to me.
Where as you could look at any other ship and see the race who built them reflected in their design, there was nothing distinctive about Earth Alliance ships which made them stand out. They always looked cobbled together, industrial or unimaginative and never really felt Human.
I love the Star furies and the Omega Class, but all the other classes and designs just seemed ambiguous.
