  • Andy records the improvement in his McArdle’s symptoms when using the ketogenic diet. He climbs sets of steps, a largely anaerobic activity, first out of ketosis and then the next day in ketosis (measured by blood test). He manages to climb 150 steps when out of ketosis, but when in ketosis he has lesser symptoms and manages 350 steps. To obtain further hard evidence Andy is planning to repeat this type of experiment with a heart rate monitor and a stopwatch. Please let us know if anyone else is thinking of undertaking a similar exercise.

    At 55 years old, I was just recently diagnosed with McArdle's after an almost deadly stint in the hospital with rhabdo last year. I was very athletic when I was young and do believe that I likely lived most of my younger life in a state of ketosis. Since my episode last year, weakness and low energy have been huge problems. I've probably lost about 1/3 of the muscle mass in my thighs. Ugh. I'm going to do some research and give this ketogenic diet a try. Thanks for posting this!

      As have I and many others. Even some who have gone carnivore find it helpful. Hurray for beta-oxidation via mitochondria using fat!!!

    What's up Andy. Thanks to your ketosis suggest I am almost at my 6 min mile goal. Thank you brother. Question, why does ketosis work so well for us and others suggest to eat sugar before exercising? Fyi my PYGM mutations are in Exon 3 and 15. Yours?

      How did you reach such a fast mile with mcardle disease? I have the same thing and am trying keto, but it is difficult to eat such little amount of carbs while also trying to eat enough calories as well as getting enough nutrients and vitamins. Any tips? Thanks

      @@philsoule2240 right-o. Clear. Tips: only you know best exactly how your body reacts to so many factors, e.g. Carolina Reaper level hot sauce effects me just like carbs with a much lower weight. The whole keto state, and probably many other factors, work in waves. Like right now, I gained 8 kg, and I can not even get to 12 kmh for 5 minutes, I have to pause 15 seconds every minute. So my only additional Tipp is to listen to your body and learn your cellular metabolism through experimentation, patience and discipline.....

    Thankyou for this video.... I'm about to research Ketogenic diet..... Huge amounts of sugar has always 'kept' me just going, but with all the alkaline diets these days, and feeling tired all the time with the sugar hits, I'm trying to research and find an answer to my mcardles and energy problems... thanks again.

      +coco D - Whilst sugar helps immediately it seems that it gets in the way of our bodies learning to utilise fats well, which is what McArdle people can do. The current best advice backed up by research is to have a slightly higher than normal level of carbohydrates using low glycemic index foods such as pasta. But do not consume large amounts of sugar - that should be limited to about twice a week, 37 grams of sucrose (a normal can of Coke) 5 minutes before activity that is likely to cause a contracture. However, there are limitations to the research and a group of patients are finding that a ketogenic diet is very much better and are hoping that the research will eventually happen to test it out thoroughly.

    Well done! I was wondering, since they can't use glucose perhaps they should try keto? So now we know!! Thanks!

      The situation is just slightly different. We can use glucose, what we can't do is convert our muscle glycogen into glucose. The skeletal muscles store about 80% of the body’s glycogen, so we have a severe energy crisis at times. Thank goodness we can utilise fat, and ketones are a very energy-dense fuel.

    is there a way to look at the ketogenic diet without paying for it?

    • @IAMGSDvideos
      @IAMGSDvideos  8 лет назад

      +TurmyHD - Sorry, I have only only just seen your question. There is no payment needed to access ketogenic diets. There are many resources that you can Google. McArdle people seem to be finding that around 65% to 70% fat is about the right level. Have you found the Facebook Group "Ketosis in McArdle's"? That could help guide you.
