I did my counter tops in the kitchen in 18" ceramic floor tile It looks Great, and i use grout on the sides ~ On the sides, i did use screen and screws to hold the grout from chipping off and cracking off. To give the counter top a more natural stone look. Then i painted it, to seal the grout

Wood would be a bad choice in wet areas like kitchen counters
