  • History has not been kind to the fabled St. Louis Line of the Baltimore and Ohio. Piece by piece and train by train, the once-important railroading link has slowly diminished. Some places still get several trains a day...but not west of Seymour, Indiana.
Now, four times a week, CSX local J780 polishes the rails, usually running from North Vernon to Mitchell. On January 5th, I chased this train, catching it at a few places, most notable being Big Tunnel. While the B&O is long gone, it's still possible to shoot a train passing CPLs on the St. Louis Line.

Me and a couple of other buddies came up there to catch J780 back on the 17th of December. Same power and everything! Great video!

You beat me to this. Be advised that The Depot Museum in Salem is interested in possibly getting one of the the CPL poles as they are removed. Last I heard, the project to replace them is on hold from CSX, but the crews are still fixing up power and putting in concrete pedestals for the new type.

They have fewer trains on the line than what they used to but they are upgrading the signal system? I thought if their downgrading the line to secondary mainline wouldn't they eventually do away with the signals?

They did get a semaphore from the old Monon line that went through Salem (CSX's Hoosier Sub)...or at least they have a semaphore at the depot.

Cool beans! I've walked through that tunnel before in the middle of Summer. Nice & cool inside. It's wide enough inside to be double tracked and the brick ends have those cubbyholes you can duck into. Back when I went through I think it may have seen one train a week. Are there more now?

Great background scenery especially the train exiting the tunnel. A few fall leaves still evident on those trees. I enjoy your videos.

Surprised they still maintain the signals and lines for just a local.

Was this stretch of the B&O St Louis Line busier pre Conrail merger? If so how many trains a day roughly?

Is the line abs or ctc signals?

that track has signals in both directions so it has to be ctc or tcs.
