My ss5000 has this engine. It's been reliable and provides plenty of power for cutting tall thick grass. Maintenance has been easy. Like all big air cooled engines adjust the valves at the specified intervals.
If you have trouble starting the engine have the battery checked as it can loose cranking power even though it says 12v.
I'd say the battery cables could be a size bigger due to the drawl of turning the powerful engine.
Always turn the engine off at higher speed to prevent backfires.
There is an excellent shop manual pdf of the engine that was published by exmark.

Mow our lawn and 4 --5 other neighbors lawns every week I help older neighbors that can't do there's. Love being on it and being free . As they say me and the machine ! Payed $2,500.00 for it brand new, a he'll of a machine for the money, just saying. Peace out ,be blessed.

    In 2021, I purchased a
Toro Timecutter 54 inch with the
    24.5 hp Toro v-twin engine,
the same engine in this video.
I cut a field with it. And I mean "a field".
It takes 16 to 18 hours per week to cut it all.
    ZERO problems.
    Before I purchased this Toro,
I looked at Skag, John Deere, Cub Cadet, Bad Boy, Husqvarna, ExMark, and Dixie Chopper.
    This is simply the most-comfortable
    zero-turn mower ever.
    I had a 15k budget for a new mower.
What was and is important to me is quality, and comfort.
Everyone has the right to their own opinion.
But I would put this 4k mower against a
15k mower any day of the week.
I cut grass at least six months per year,
at 16 to 18 hours per week.
I am close to 400 hours of hard use with this mower, and no problems-period.
I will probably wear the tires off this mower in a couple more years.
I'm not saying that you can't buy a good mower in the other brands,
    because you can.
BUT, NONE of them can compete with the ride quality of the 54 inch Timecutter.
    My $0.02 cents worth.

This engine is a beast! Starts every time and runs smoothly. If you cut a lot of grass try the Oregon g3 gator blades, they dont cut nearly as clean but they cut more grass without bogging down and are significantly thicker and tougher. The g5 and g6 are wayyy to big for the time cutter spindles, had no problems with the g3

I've owned and operated my V-twin for more than 3 years now and it runs and cuts like new. I know there are a lot of people who think steel is always better (try selling that to Kevlar) but I will say I'm happy about my nylon cam gear. It's incredibly smooth with no sign of ever needing adjusted or replaced. Awesome product Toro, really just an amazing machine all around!!

    • @MacGyver-1
      @MacGyver-1 4 года назад +1

Haha cam gears never need adjustment, they reason people are butt hurt over the nylon cams is because of the problems they have caused over the years, I'm not saying Loncin ( the Chinese manufacturer) doesn't have it all figured out. Time will tell, I get about 2500 hours out of the motors they copied. After that I rebuild them and keep on abusing them. But I digress, this motor would not hold up in a commercial environment.

    • @carlosrobles2048

@@MacGyver-1yeah that's bullshit. You're not getting $2,500 hours of any small engine, whatever brand it is. Also, nylon gears have been used in so many modern engines, there are no problems with them. I don't believe you rebuild anything, I can tell just by the way you talk

@@carlosrobles2048Think what you want, the truth is the truth. Just about every motor that used plastic cam gears have problems come up. Look up Kawasaki cam upgrades that are one piece steel instead of plastic cam gears moulded on a steel cam shaft. Kohler bucket motors often had teeth break off the plastic cam gears if the cylinder didn't break off the block first, and yes I rebuild a lot of motors mostly twins off commercial mowers that I buy at auction and sell locally, Kawasaki fx, fd, fr series, Kohler command, command pro EFI, even some old magnum K series and KT series. Golf cart engines, Yamaha, and Kawasaki FE series. Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.... Oh even Onan has issues with plastic on their cam gears, but it wasn't gears it was the the fingers for the ball and cup governor on the performer series engines, I've rebuilt them to in applications where replacement wasn't an option such as in two cases both welder generators

Some of the comments were brutal, but this toro engine is well worth the price. I bought a SW toro zero turn mower in 2016. It has the same motor that's in this video. It will backfire when you turn it off unless you run it wide open just before shutting it off. You won't hurt the motor running it wide open before shutting down, the governor keeps it from overrevving. I have had this mower for six years and zero problems with the motor. I change the oil each season, sharpen the blades and add stabilizer in the fall to the gas. I replaced the battery last year. I did not like the idea of having a Chinese motor on the mower and did not know it until after I had brought it home and used it. Toro has a good reputation and I bought it because they stand behind their product. It still runs like a new one, I have no issues at this time.

This a a knock off of the Kawasaki fh series engines. There is nothing inside that engine that makes it any more modern than the motor it copied. I'm not sure what your qualifications are but I rebuild about 10 engines a year. Reasons for rebuild are usually neglect with the occasional factory defect gone untreated. Normal use engines of this configuration ( air cooled v-twin) see about 3000 to 4000 hrs of use if properly maintained. In fact I will predict the most common premature failure of this motor will be burnt valves due to improperly adjusted valve lash. Just like on the the Kawasaki FH. But I digress. Please tell me what makes this motor so modern...

The Toro brand is made by Loncin Chinese company, mine back fires and the paper work says it has a warranty but I have yet to see it. When I take it back for warranty they only do what they can charge me for. In fact I will never buy another Toro. I have the commercial myride I only bought it for the seat. Where is your engine made? I know the Kohler is made in the USA, not sure about the Kawi? Also the Kohler has options that you are conveniently forgetting to show like a pre filter just like the Toro engine. Also the Kohler has a tool-less oil drain with a locking mechanism so if some pulls the oil drain like or it gets caught on a branch the oil won't run out of the engine all over your grass or driveway. The Toro oil drain is an open hose and will drain the oil sump! All Kohler and Kawai engines have cast iron sleeves in the cylinder. Again you kindly forgot to mention this. By you leaving out a lot of information on the Kawi and Kohler it feels like you are trying to trick people into thinking your engine is something great. Too bad you don't have real features that make a difference in the engine life and performance.

I bought a 2020 titan with a 48 in deck. I have 3 questions that I would appreciate a logical answer from a Toro expert.. question 1. Why does a toro want to start the engine at full throttle,? 2 Why shut the engine down at full throttle? 3 why engage the blades at full throttle? I have never operated any piece of equipment this way. It goes against logic. You don’t operate any other piece of equipment this. Way. That I know of except a cheep push mower. If you operated your car/truck nothing would last very long.i have never owned a 0 turn mower but I have Chain saws, Blowers, string trimmers, small garden tractors.with small 2 cylinder engines and blades with electric clutches. Most engines need to warm up to get full lubrication. Looks like there will be a lot of extra wear on the engine, electric clutch and belt. As for shutting down the engine at full throttle I would think it better to let the engine idle a few min to cool down.

William, Kohler has been using nylon cam gears for over ten years- even in their commercial engines. I've heard that all the pro stock cars use them too. Cheaper they are, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are inferior- and especially when used with a governor set up for mowing lawns, meaning they don't see high rpms. Not to mention the technology has come a long way since the 70's when many of the car manufacturers starting using them. Today they have fiber reinforcement and other chemical attributes. Combine that with smoother crank and less drag, and I'd say the nylon gears will remain persistent in high performance engines for many years to come.

    Nylon!?
    Seriously!?
Why must consumers that don't buy commercial grade equipment get absolute shit?!
    Plastic...
Why not make the whole cam out nylon if its so great?
I'll tell you why, because it's not great.
    Fucking Tupperware engine parts!
    What an abomination!

I was no longer interested in this motor as soon as I saw the nylon gears. Chevy did this in the 60s / 70's and those damn timing cam gears were done in with broke teeth before 100k miles. it was not worth a shit then and its not worth a shit now. Thanks for letting me see the cheap ass crap you are putting in your " commercial " motor. LMFAO. I'll stick with the Kawasaki

Agreed with Johnson on this one. Just to add, nylon cam gear??? Really!! that will be the weak point of that engine. Also, polymer intakes are a good thing. They avoid "heat soak", which robs engines (exapecially air cool engines) of torque causing less air to get into the engine.

jon, how many engines have you heard of that had a nylon gear brake in them?

Yes And no. You have forced air from the flywheel sys. You will have heat soak with a hot engine that's not running. And will go away once you are running it. Why it does not have the time to heat soak. That has been tested with auto ind. Plus i am sure did the r/d on that engine for that.
