    I so agree, univibe is univibe, not phaser. It’s not just the organic sweep to me, it’s that strange, non-symmetrical wave pattern that only the slow increase of a bulb coming on, and the quick decrease of a bulb going off that makes it sound so special. That organic, geometrically complex waveform is so smoove compared to the polished sine and sawtooth waves of phasers.
    So glad you answered the question of lightbulb versus octocoupler, super cool.
    Also, really appreciate sharing some thoughts on the way vibe versus rotary labels have been used over the decades. And super agree, they are very different.
    I love univibe, and appreciate that it might have been created to stand in for Leslie, but golly that’s not a great Leslie sound. (I immediately picked up an RT-20 after watching your video and I’ve been very happy with it. Thanks for that!)
    Speaking of loving univibe, I’ve gone through a search of them for sometime, and it’s super worth trying out the Dry Bell Vibe Machine. It’s just outstanding. Version 3 has multiple external trim pots, excellent standard controls to dial in your vibe, and an expression pedal out to make it sound like a pretty decent Leslie. (Still nowhere near as good as the RT-20, but hey, what is.)
    Awesome video, thanks!

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  2 года назад

      Thanks for always giving me your honest feedback, and I'm super glad you like the RT-20. Mine almost got "lost" to a keyboard player, and I legit had to track them down Carmen Sandiego style to get it back, so mine is extra-special to me.
      Yeah, I feel like when it comes to modulation effects, it's like talking about muffins and cake and bread and biscuits and cookies; there are benchmark examples that most people would say "That's obviously a cake" (regional dialects notwithstanding) but change the size or shape or tweak the recipe just a little bit and the overlap starts to become apparent. I've thought about diving into it as an episode, but I feel like I might come out looking like the Pepe Silvia scene from Always Sunny, and it'd probably just result in people getting angry and fighty int he comments.
      I keep hearing good things about the DryBell Vibe Machine as well. As usual, Andy's demo makes it sound indispensable. Before I get too many more pedals, I need more storage space, though... a good problem to have, I guess.

    I got those pedals too.. microvibe and the BBE..I like them both..but you described them spot on. Im trying this one over the voodoolabs on my main board just to test it out and changing stuff around from time to time and yesterday I took it out to a 4hour rehearsal for a blues show we have coming soon..I find the voodoolabs more chewy and that it seems to sink the guitar sound a bit more into the background... but the BBE while a bit less "chewy" for a lack of a better word, seems to work great for a lead guitarist...as you pointed out. And that trimpod is great for fine tuning to the pedalboard position: when it's after a fuzzface univibes tend to sound shrill so it's nice to attenuate that by turning the trimmer a bit to the bass side. nice little tool.
    About bulbs.. that's more marketing than anything else -technology had come a long way and we should use our ears not our eyes or ego.
    Great video.. I might make one about a few pedals and this one would definitely be on the list.
    keep up the good work

I have a Damage Control Blue Nexus for my tiny practice rig, and the Uni-Vibe emulation is on 100% of the time, to some variation of wet/dry. Just adds a nice depth to a boxy sounding little 15w combo. Something standard phaser and flange just don’t catch or offer really.

      Also, my dream vibe is the Retro Vibe from Jam. But cant afford it, so im thinking on getting the microvibe. What do you think? is it an upgrade from the bbe? (in the sense of a more classic vibe sound)

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  2 года назад

      Hard to say, I think each has something really nice going for them, and I've never played an actual Uni-Vibe, so I can't really compare. There were times I wished the Micro Vibe was a little thicker, but it always sounds just right in the mix when I'm playing with the band and using it to add a bit of modulated flavor. The Soul Vibe starts to shine with the intensity up high. Sorry, I know that isn't an answer.
      An optocoupler is used as a way of connecting two circuits without actually connecting them via a wire. Typically this is done so stray voltage and hum and other weird stuff from one circuit won't make its way into the other circuit. It's a method of isolating them since the only "transmission" between them is light. It's just an LED on one side, and then some sort of light-sensing photo-resistor or phototransistor or photocell (I think they're the same thing, but I'm sure I'd get yelled at by someone who knows better if I said that). There's a black shroud connecting them so the LED can shine squarely on the sensor without any outside light affecting things.
      Some pedals place an actual light bulb and the sensors inside a little metal box, so it's the one light source and (usually) 4 sensors around it, but since that requires some additional nonstandard manufacturing steps, most mass-produced pedals will just use a couple of all-in-1 optocouplers.
      In a pedal that uses an actual filament-equipped bulb (as opposed to an LED) there's the added characteristic of how that bulb will take a little longer to get to full brightness and then fully go dim afterwards, so the LED-equipped Uni-Vibes (The Depths, Soul Vibe) can go a lot faster then the Micro Vibe. I think I might have done a demo of that aspect in my The Depths video.
      Oh dear, this is a long post, lol

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  2 года назад

      Ooh, decisions decisions. I think my biggest problem with The Depths is that from a practicality standpoint, it's 5 knobs that are likely going to get bumped around in transport, and even if I mark them with stickers (as I normally do) I'd rather have something with minimal controls that's fairly easy to diagnose and fix. Once upon a time, I saw a pedal with more knobs as having more value... these days I tend to appreciate a pedalmaker who establishes a fundamental sound for their pedal and gives a thoughtful amount of adjustment.
      This opinion is subject to change week-to-week, though :)

    I've been told that my MXR phase 45 and whatever rotary effect I use should go through the effects loop. I have faithfully complied. Then I recently heard someone say that I shouldn't be doing that. I haven't yet experimented but I will because I haven't liked anything I've used so far. I've tried a vibe whose name I can't remember, then I bought the Pigtronix Rototron, and now I have the EarthQuaker Devices The Depths. They always feel like I'm changing the tone way too much (to something worse) when I switch them on. Any thoughts?

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  2 года назад +3

      The argument for time-based effects like chorus, delay, and reverb in the effects loop of your amp is that those effects are meant to add spaciousness and dimension, and they should be working on a signal as close to what's coming out of the amp as possible. The counter-argument is that the the difference is pretty minuscule, and people have been running time-based effects up front for decades, and that putting delays *after* the preamp is more of the "90's pro studio" type sound, where everything up front is more natural and organic.
      A Uni-Vibe is closer to a phaser circuit than anything else, and a phaser uses a series of all-pass filters to notch out a certain set of frequencies and sweep that notch back and forth, kind of like a filter.
      For the second demo jam there, I put it after the distortion pedal, so it's sweeping through all of the harmonics generated by that Supa Cobra, making it more dramatic. Putting it before the distortion makes it a bit more subtle and watery.
      TL;DR - If I'm using a phaser/univibe to add dimension and just be a little swirly, I'll put it up front, before any distortion. When I want it to be pronounced and thick, it goes right after my biggest source of distortion. As with most things, people will swear by whatever they like, but I've seen plenty of players doing it "wrong" who have tone I'd kill for.
