I so appreciate and am grateful for your teachings that clarify maintenance (“psychologising” away unpleasant feelings) vs. enduring the unpleasant and making an effort to understand the necessary basis for that which is felt unpleasantly, and just as importantly, my desire to escape what is experienced as unpleasant.
Thank you very much! You've shown me the faith that I was missing for practice.
very deep discussion thank you. the only way for us to understand the dhamma is by practicing it, contemplating, sila and understand what the Buddha said in sutta.
Very good sacchaka !thank you bhantes Sadhu x3!
The simile Bhante Nyanamol used pertaining to following a certain doctor’s treatment protocol in search for a cure to an ailment works quite well if one were to subside the word “doctor” with “ajahn,” “bhante,” or “dhamma teacher.” 👌🏼Excellent.
Thank you for your videos. The four factors of stream entry are presented in two ways. One set is for those intent on stream entry and the other is for those who have attained it. "Association, hearing, constant attention and practicing in accordance" will in itself lead to stream entry. "Absolute faith in buddha, dharma and sangha and purified conduct" is only possessed by those who have attained it. Understanding of dependent arising is not a prerequisite for stream entry.
Did they say in the video that it is a prerequisite? I don't think they did, but I might have missed it.
Venerables, you may have addressed this before, but I wonder, what exactly is going on when the mind wonders off? I think it’s the mind searching for something to latch onto. Maybe the mind is just bored or is averse to the lack of stimulation and is seeking sensuality? Thank you!
The mind wandering off is not a problem. As one of the senses, the mind seeks thoughts. The issue is what type of thoughts the mind goes to (eg. sensuality, ill will, doubt, boredom) and whether we allow it to stay there once we recollect what is going on.
@@HillsideHermitage Thank you, Venerables. This comes as a bit of a relief.
Understanding the mind as one of the senses is a bit more…subtle, for lack of a better word.
Great talk, saved into favorites. Thank you!
What is Nyanamoli Thero’s background regarding philosophy or phenomenology? I also recognize Jean Paul Sarte in his thinking. I’m also curious if you both are familiar with Buddhasa Bhikkhu.
Would it be possible to talk about the first precept and vegetarianism? As a layperson I find it hard to follow the first precept. Even if I become vegetarian there are animals that die when the fields are plowed? Unless you become a monastic it seems almost impossible to me? I would appreciate your wisdom on this subject! Thank you very much for all your videos they are very helpful.
Check out this video for Ajahn Nyanamoli's take on that:

Thank you very much for continuing to post valuable Dhamma material. If I may ask, what translation of the Sutta's would you recommend? I know the Bhikkhu Bodhi translations are very popular, but I also would like to avoid as much misunderstanding as possible. Thank you again.
You can read any translation to begin with. Then when you come across a Sutta that sparks your interest and reflection find as many translations of it as possible and study them all together with consulting the Pali.
@@HillsideHermitage Thank you for the advice, I'll do just that.

confident of escape
The entry is death. That is the only way to know the deathless, or to be born again. Actual death. It can't be confused with anything else. And it's the universal experience that BEGINS the substantive development. The problem is how to do it? And there's no easy answer. It's not a matter of steps 1 2 3 ... It's a matter of suffering so much, in many cases, to the point where you just release in deep meditation. Every true form of spirituality has its own techniques. To die before you die can't be taught easily. Generally, it requires a supreme intent to go beyond all things whatsoever, even pure meditation space, and a supreme dissatisfaction with all things whatsoever. Lack of clinging. Reason has no effect when you are beyond mind+body. And beyond mind+body is not release. There is a further beyond.
My name is VeritableVagabond, and I am subject to suffering.
I always feel like opposites are mentioned in the least favorable light and Buddhism is defended without mentioning its more problematic aspects.
Mysticism: we should talk about rebirth. Is it clear? Should we accept that?
Other religions: why not mention Socrates, Plato, Aristotle? How many Buddhists parrot clichés about judaism or christianity, but don't know the words that have been said. For example Book of Proverbs starts:
"The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel, [are]; אמִשְׁלֵי שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה בֶן־דָּוִ֑ד מֶ֜֗לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל:
2To know wisdom and discipline, to comprehend words of understanding; בלָדַ֣עַת חָכְמָ֣ה וּמוּסָ֑ר לְ֜הָבִ֗ין אִמְרֵ֥י בִינָֽה:
3To receive the discipline of wisdom, righteousness, justice, and equity; גלָקַחַת מוּסַ֣ר הַשְׂכֵּ֑ל צֶ֥דֶק וּ֜מִשְׁפָּ֗ט וּמֵישָׁרִֽים:
4To give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth. דלָתֵ֣ת לִפְתָאיִ֣ם עָרְמָ֑ה לְ֜נַ֗עַר דַּ֣עַת וּמְזִמָּֽה:
5Let the wise man hear and increase learning."
So right there, we are also being told to not abandon reason, but to acquire DISCIPLINE & understanding. Similarly, in many traditional teachings - like Plotinus, Laozu, and in hinduism - there are the same requirements there. I feel that these aren't being portrayed correctly in these videos.
Then one must ask. What is the goal of those other religions and what is the goal of Buddhism? Then we should ask is there non self in other teachings and is there unbinding and escape from unbinding. This is why Buddhism is different from other teachings
In Buddhism, the mind is the forerunner. When this is understood through experience, rebirth is understood.
