A little trick I used from having to clean two big flattop grills every night at a restaurant. Use carbonated water. I don’t know exactly why, but the carbonation will cause all that caked on crap to just fall off. They also sell “grill bricks” which are made of a porous material that you can use to scrub the surface without damaging it (steel scrubber will work too but it scratches the surface).
Those are both great tools for stainless griddles. They aren’t typically needed on these cold rolled steel tops though.
Awesome job.. that’s exactly what I do.. don’t forget to give a little love to the edges with that avocado oil. 👍🏽
Watching this reminds me of cleaning the flat iron with vinegar and ice chips, in the school resteraunt. Shit still burns my nostrils.
We used Sprite at our hospitality school lol
I'd love to be able to took an entire breakfast on one surface, everything at the same time.
This is so satisfying
Sus
Awesome. Love my blackstone griddles.
Congrats on 100K 🎉
Wow well Done - suggest extra option - get a glass jar of condies crystal & place under your hood when unit is cool - it with absorb any air moisture- you can dry out the crystals latter by heating
You have done such a great job in preparing the plate this may be a help.
Thanks for this video, I just bought one and I have not used it yet, but I plan on using it this fall.
Nice! I wouldn’t wait if I were you! Get that thing out and start cooking!
Great informational video. Thanks.
Excellent job. Thank you.
I'm in your neck of the woods. T&T, Southern Bell Farms, Georgia Bulldogs, Yeah, we are neighbors. You have a great channel!
Thanks! Perhaps we will run into each other sometime.
I usually just put a little bit of oil on it and clean it that way and then add just enough to lightly cover the top for storage keep it from rusting don’t have a cover yet so it also helps clean before cooking
My first griddle I would flip over. It stayed clean enough for me till I got a new flat top that has a cover built in...
Great video as always
Lol thanks you taught me how to griddle
You just made me smile! Thank you.
I love your channel.
Thank you so much!
Thank you. I’m thinking of getting a blackstone griddle
Don’t look at only Blackstone. There are several brands to choose from. My fav is Weber.
This is the biggest pain in the butt about having a blackstone. Other than that they rock. Great for a big family breakfast.
For me, cleaning it is like therapy.
I enjoy cleaning mine after the food is served.
Thanks dad i just bought one recently
Dont forget to mention steam burns, let the steam die down a bit before going gung ho and putting your arms in the steam cloud. Burned myself good before cleaning the blacktop in the resturaunt doing that
WHAT A GREAT VIDEO. WOOOWWW
It’s helpful to clean immediately after cooking
Well yea he just wants to eat his food warm 🤣
So I do the same cleaning process with mine but I have trouble with the scraper. I always end up accidentally gouging the service or scraping to hard in spots and it ruins the smooth black surface of the griddle and makes the seasoning layer uneven. Do you have a brand of scraper you like best? It could just be my technique but whenever I have stuck on spots from a sweet marinade or something like you show in the video, that’s when I inevitably end up gouging the seasoning layer even when I am trying to be careful.
I like the dough cutter/bench knife from Dollar General because it has rounded corners and just the right amount of flex.
Perfect, thank you
You're welcome!
Next time put 1/5 lime or lemon juice in 4/5 water in your squeeze bottle, it will lift up that dirt so much easier and cut through the grease super quick. It will get that teriyaki glaze out of there way faster than just plain water, it's what I use at my business flat tops and always works amazing.
P. S Olive oil is better to add at the end because it adds more flavor to the griddle top and when you cook next time with it you'll notice the difference, trust me.
Vinegar is cheaper than the lemon or lime
Olive oil burns and is gross to season with
He has over 100k subscribers that love his content... I believe you have 6 subs... I'll take his tips for my griddle
@@richardfowler3254have you ever been to a hibachi restaurant they always put half a lemon in a rag and clean the grill with it subs have nothing to do with real life experience 🤦♂️
Avocado oil makes my steaks taste like plastic olive oil all the way
@@hoss6981 I would honestly say that you are using too much oil or a "cheaper" brand of it. I like and use CHOSIN brand and also use it lightly and I do not see or have any issues. I like using Avocado Oil for its higher smoke point and it is what I have used when I set up my Blackstone as well as my friends... I hope you can get it sorted out.
I use ice work super well
Ice is the name of the game.
Add vinegar to the water or use ecolab high temperature grill cleaner (home Depot $14 a gallon)
That that was 🐦 droppings...🤣🤣🤣
Naaaaahhhhhh.
Lemons work well for cleaning flat tops also.
I don’t recommend them on a seasoned steel griddle. Those are great for stainless though.
Wow yours looks excellent. I used mine for the first time and cleaned it and it just won't seem to be clean. It was seasoned to start but I don't know. Seems dirty to me lol
Just keep cooking! It will be fine!
Awesome! The only issue I have with your method is the manufacturer says to never put water on your cast iron. I just got mine seasoned and i used their proprietary black stone seasoning & conditioner. Idk cuz I used to use water on my cast iron pans but they also started to kinda suck after a while and so I’m personally never going to put highly acidic foods and water or soap on my black stone it can just stay dirty it basically just turns to carbon anyways. But what do I know lol
The manufacturer doesn’t say not to use water on the griddle. The Blackstone videos show using water to clean them. The Weber instructions also say to use water.
50/50 white vinegar and water or the best is pickle juice.
satisfying
Makes it look so easy. I alway get lines on mine when I start her up. Never understand why. Wishbmine looked like his
What do you lines?
Best choice for oil is sunflower oil , it is the only oil that does not have water in it
Seed oils aren’t great for you. I’ve actually switched to avocado oil.
Grill bricks work great.
They aren’t needed on a steel griddle if you keep it clean.
Id definitely add some vinegar to that water to help with the cleaning process
No
@@bryantburns3664 except yes
looks like the one I have. Can't find that model anymore. Walmart special.
Yep. They aren’t sold anymore.
I actually was wondering about how soon after cooking to clean. I see people say to clean it before you eat but that means you don’t get to enjoy the hard work. Can you let it cool and go eat and then crank it back to heat up and then clean and season?
Yes. Either way works. For me it depends on how messy it is. If it’s a quick cleanup I quickly do it while people are heading to the table.
I had to buy a long handle scraper. The heat radiating off the griddle burns my hands.
No matter what I do mine rusts. I do live in the Everglades where humidity is 100 percent but yeah it sucks
The wet coat of oil is key. Look into the silicone griddle mats.
High humidity here, too. Double coating the grill with oil has helped me! Sides and all, each time.
Yes SE Texas here. Had constant rust issues. I do what he does in the video. But let it cool and add a thicker layer of oil down then put the cover on. It’s been working great
Yeah you gotta keep a thin coat of oil all over it before it rusts that will prevent it from rusting
I see a lot of people using Dawn dish soap on their Blackstone grill would you recommend using soap on a grill
Only for the first cleaning or when you plan you restore it. Soap won’t hurt it but it’s not needed.
Do you wipe it down before you cook, too, or is the heating up process enough to clear off anything that might get through the soft and hard covers?
I only wipe it down if it’s been a week or two since I last cooked.
Pumice stone = 💯
from working in restaurants for years. use ice and sprite first and then rinse off with ice water. the sprite is so acidic everything comes off right away
Soda water is better than sprite. You don’t need the sugars.
High school working at Hardee's showed me all this
I put a half gallon of ice cubes on mine clean it off then oil it
That can warp some griddles.
So, do you have the largest Blackstone? If griddle isn’t used as often, does it get the stale oil smell/taste? I’ve used iron skillets for over 30 years so it might be same concept?
Yes the 36” is their largest model. I now have Weber griddles though. If you leave wet oil for long periods of time they will go rancid but it’s easy to clean off.
It only takes a couple days but all good. Not everyone cooks/ bbqs as often as we do so…….
The cleaning process? It should take no more than 5 min.
Where did you get the metal scrappers?
Here you go: amzn.to/4coVgg7
Just got one. Been doing a lot of research.
Is it better to rub it with oil after each cook and let it burn off or just let it sit with a layer of oil on it? Also is olive oil good as well instead of avacado?
Just let it sit on it. If you let it sit several weeks, it has potential to go rancid but you can just heat it up and clean it before cooking again. The wet oil prevents rust. Avocado oil is better because it has a higher smoke point than olive oil.
Is that a 4 burner griddle? What's the model? Thank you!
This was a Blackstone Pro. It’s no longer made. I have a four burner Weber now.
how long should the burners be off before applying the oil?
Don't have to wait at all
Another great way to do it is use sprite! And water if you want to give it an extra clean
I wouldn’t recommend sprite but soda water isn’t bad.
@@GrillThisSmokeThatI guess I should’ve added that I only use sprite after a really dirty use. Soda water does just fine too though
So u keep it on high the entire time ur cleaning it? Thx for the vid btw!
Yes. Unless it gets too hot.
So wondering why avocado oil? I just got one a fee weeks ago and I've been using peanut oil.
High smoke point oil
I don't use water almost ever. Although my avocado oil bill is up there...
I don't smoke the last application of oil after cleaning, like the seasoning process ?
I leave the last coat wet. No need to let it smoke.
Sprite and ice my dude
Why do you use avocado oil?
Living on the wild side.
The avocado oil can spoil. Any time you season a griddle or pan, cast iron etc. you should heat just until it starts to smoke. Then it will not spoil.
It may spoil if left for long periods of time. I’ve never had an issue but I do cook regularly.
Let it dry after putting the water on before you put the oil on
When it’s hot like this it dries really quickly.
Oh boy look what I got... Did I mention the name?
Why are we supposed to add oil at the end? What happens if we don’t?
The oil prevents it from rusting.
They make as cleaner that makes it SHINE JS
That’s for stainless steel. This isn’t that.
Can you use stainless steel scrubber to clean off griddle top?
I have some rust on mine. How can I clean it off?
Steel wool
Mr commando over here…
Distilled water recommended or regular tap water okay?
Regular is fine.
Why do you use avocado oil over other oils ? Genuinely curious.
High smoke point - 500 degrees. Olive oil for example would absolutely burn and smoke like crazy at 400
Thank you.
I thought you were supposed to leave heat on until oil stopped smoking at the end. Am I doing something wrong if so why or what
You don’t let the oil smoke after cleaning. That’s only when seasoning it. There is no need to season after every cook. Leaving it wet prevents rust.
The best time to clean your grill is right after u use it!
That works too.
Lemon and squeezy
This was the only downside to owning a flat top the half-hour of cleaning every time you used it. I used mine for one season and sold it
It takes like 3 minutes to clean and reapply oil
@@Kyle-jg3spwell Kyle I'm guessing either you've never owned one or you've never cooked a big meal on one because it's definitely not a 3-minute process
I’ve had mine for 3 years I just scrape it when I’m done and add oil before the next cool that’s it
@@repobud1it takes 5 mins at most if your competent
@@jayrobinson4080 competent? this from a guy whose thumbnail is cartoons and the only video on his channel is cartoons another kid who came here to start shit... better run Jay Mommy's got your lunch ready.
Do you burn seasoning grilll after using griddle
No.
So do you re season completely every time you cook? I’ve never messed with it honestly so I’m genuinely curious. Just feel like you season it, then go scraping at it there’s no way the season stays
No. Nothing shown here is seasoning. It’s cleaning then adding a wet coat of oil. Seasoning is when you add oil then high heat to polymerize the oil.
My black stone never looks this good after I clean it
If you clean it regularly like this it will get there.
Ice and vinegar works good as well.
Ice cubes with dawn
Interesting.
If you have constant wet air that turns your black stone rusty, use oven cleaner to get all that off in minutes.
Proper cleaning and maintenance prevents rust even in coastal areas.
@@GrillThisSmokeThat I’m quite sure. Not everyone does it though.
@@mommyharris1111 Exactly. It’s essential though.
use lemon juice vinegar or seltzer water
I prefer flaxseed oil but I leave the burners on. You'll get a better seasoning using heat
This a cleaning video. The griddle was already very well seasoned. Flax seed oil is great for seasoning though.
Is a soft cover necessary?
I have soft covers for all of my grills. I think they are very necessary for longevity.
You don’t use lemon juice with the water to clean it?
No. There is no need.
Your supposed to heat that oil up. It makes a glaze over the surface
the griddle is still piping hot from the cleaning process
@@WalterDEggerit should actually be smoking
@@booi why would you want that? avocado oil has one of the highest smoke points of any oil
@@WalterDEggerthe oil doesn't polymerize (the black seasoning) until it reaches its smoke point.
@WalterDEgger not hot enough to season it. Look up how to season a skillet here on youtube and you'll understand
That looks like a lot of work cleaning the blackstone each time
This was an extreme case due to the sugars. Most days it takes 2-3 min.
Ice works better over water
You need an oil layer after all that work so it doesn’t rust
Yep.
Hahahaha "Thats all you do is 20 things to the grill to get it clean"
Hmmm. 20? Cleans in 3-5 min. Faster than washing multiple pans.
Why Avacado Oil?
Just a tip.. wait til the water Doesn't evaporate immediately and instead rolls and bubbles. It's much better for the surface.
Thanks.
Thanks for the content! I enjoy your tips for folks!
20 minutes to cook dinner 2 hours to clean up
Would rather spend ‘2 hours’ cleaning than eating dinner with your dumbass 😂
You Can wipe it all down/off while its still hot from cooking then add oil too. Its basically like soaking a sauce pan as opposed to scrubbing clean once dry, as far as effort goes.
Nah it takes like 15 mins tops. I used to work in a kitchen and cleaned a bigger grill than that in like 20 minutes every night when I closed.
Can i use olive oil instead of avocado?
You can but it has a pretty low smoke point. Normal cook temps on a griddle exceed 400° so olive oil will burn.
Where can get those scrappers from? And what are they called?
Go to this link and it’s the second one from the top. linktr.ee/tightwaddiy

Having a black stone seems sweet until you gotta use half a roll of paper towels every time you use it
I scrape mine immediately after I’m done cooking, use 3 or 4 paper towels to wipe it down, then use 1 more folded paper towel to lightly coat it in vegetable oil.
The instructions say once you clean it the first time and season it, never put water on it again.
What’s your process that’s eating up all your paper towels? lol
