I’m running a ruger american tactile with 18” barrel. I slowly worked up H4350 with Berger 140gn vld hunter. Was able to get to 2720’s with slightly flattened primer. Bolt lift was fine. Good luck on your quest
Starline lrp The down side is I’m only get 4 firings with it. After I go through the starline going to try alpha or Lapua brass to see if it will extend case life. I’ll have to redo powder test working it up safely and looking for the accuracy node
After fourth firing the bottom of the case has swollen and I get tight bolt close. If I had a small base die it would probably fix the issue but I know starline is a little thinner then the upper tier bass and it was quick and affordable start in looking for the speeds. In the ruger.
I was happy with the results. An tested it from 97 degree day to 30 degree day. I lose a little speed on cold temp but H4350 is pretty temp stable. An if you shirt pocket (body warmth) a couple rounds on cold temp the speed does drop but couple fps.
I would rechamber it to the 6.5-284... The best and safest way to get velocity is simply more case capacity. I shoot the 147 ELDM in my 6.5-284 with Retumbo powder and am getting 3050 fps. It has a 26" barrel, but any of the 4831 powders would do great with the shorter barrel... As mentioned earlier. The 6.5 Creedmoor and speed aren't compatible. Running super short barrels are of no help. And using a suppressor isn't going to make up for the short barrel. Every test I've seen and been involved with has shown no more than 12-15 fps increase depending on caliber. Don't let a short barrel fool you into using a faster powder. And in a cold weather state like here in Montana, stay away from the ball powders. Stay with H4350. I did loads for a 7mm-08 with with a 18" barrel and best velocities with 139gr Hornady SST's was with H4350 and it was 2890 fps with 2 full grains less than the listed book max from Hodgdon. Where their data called for 2905 fps with a 24" test barrel... Also, if you're not using a magnum primer, maybe try them. Especially with any slower powders, like H4350. I shoot Federal 215 primers in everything I shoot and load for. Have you tried Varget yet? My buddy's rifle in 6.5 Creemoor loves it...
No I haven’t used Varget. All my other rifles love h4350. I wasn’t expecting much was hoping to gain maybe 50fps but didn’t even get that. This was really my first experience with a short short barrel like 16in so just experimenting and having some fun. That howa superlite is the lightest factory action I believe coming in at 15oz so the issue with going to the 6.5-284 would be action length. Great cartridge though the 6.5-284 wish lapua would start making brass again. I know suppressor don’t add anything and if they do it’s only from the chrono being that little bit further away. Haha I don’t think it’s a being old and dumb sir! I have never really had any rifle with a barrel that short just wanted to try something new! I did take that 16in barrel to 1310 a couple weeks ago. I think if you’re stretching that far more barrel is definitely better!
@@JustAnotherGuyAdventures in a 16 inch barrel, it's difficult to beat a 308, a 7-08 or even a 338 federal for efficiency. A suppressed 16 inch 308 shooting lighter bullets is a legit hunting round. There is a reason it's so popular in the military with 14.5 and 16 inch barreled rifles. I like a 6.5 cm with an 18 inch barrel suppressed. They lose a lot between 18 and 16 inch. A 6.5 cm picks up very little speed per inch after 22 or 23 inch. A 308 is quite fast in a 20 inch barrel. A 7 saum and 300 wsm work well suppressed in 20 inch barrels.
@ I had a 20” 308 I really wasn’t impressed with how much speed it lost. Still great cartridges! Just asking to much out of a 16 in 6.5 creed think the 20in is the way to go. I agree the saum and wsm might be the way to go!

I have an 18" barrel Savage Hunter I can't get close to book velocity with anything heavier than 120 grains. My Sierra 142 Match King Load is only 2552 fps in the summer when it's hotter I have gotten a little over 2600 the slower load is very accurate at 100 yards. Get you some 95 grain V Max or 100 grain Sierra Hollow points and you can stay below max and get some velocity. I have loaded some 130 grain Berger Hybrids that come close to the velocities in the Berger book the suppressor doesn't give you any more speed either. I have a 20" barreled .243 that reacts the same as the Creedmoor there's a point where more powder is just more smoke and flash in the short tube. My long barrel .260 blows the Creedmoor away with velocity numbers.
Yea I’m more of bc guy. I’ll take the slower speed with higher bc. My 20 in savage I believe is getting close to 2650 with 143s. Lost a lot more from dropping to a 16” I know the suppressor doesn’t gain any speed. I wasn’t using it for that!
@@JustAnotherGuyAdventures You would think it should but it doesn't. I have a SRT Shadow .30 I use on my rifles with threaded barrels that thing is heavy and doesn't screw with accuracy. Those 130 grain Berger OTM Hybrids can get loaded up to speed at least in my 18" barrel they do and still below max book load.
Cool video, was watching to see how these powders perform kinda looks like you ran into a wall with pressure. I did the math 25fps per inch on barrel length x10 because my barrel is 26" shilen match going 2860fps with n160 140 gr. sierra match. Primers are flat and cratered but no ejector swipe.
Velocity loss due to shorter barrels is not linear. You might see 35 to 50 fps loss per inch when going from 18 to 16 inch but only 20 to 30 fps per inch when going from 24 to 22 inches. Also, it depends on starting Velocity. A 40 gr v max in a 223 at 3500 fps will have a much larger Velocity loss in shorter barrels than a 77 mk bullet at 2700 fps, but the ratio will be similar.
@JustAnotherGuyAdventures yes, and that's why shooting a lighter and faster bullet makes more sense for hunting out to 500 yards when you shoot a small caliber with a short barrel. 2500 and 2600 fps high bc target bullets are not optimal for hunting in the ranges you are working with. The faster bullets will match up with the ballistic reticle you are using. If shooting a 2nd focal plane scope, you can fine tune the line gaps with the scopes magnification dial. Too many shooters focus on a bullets bc instead of velocity and on game performance. Shooting a 147 out of a 6.5 cm is like shooting a 190 or 200 grain from a 308, these bigger bullets are better for shooting steel or shooting them from a 6.5 prc or a 300 win or prc. A 150 to 168 grain bullet in a 308 is like a 120 to 135 in a 6.5 cm. It's a better balance of weight and speed for hunting.
@@thebryguy96yes. I’ve got two friends here in the southeast who got the 6.5 CM bug years ago and was having a fit with their harvest. Both were reluctant to change projectiles but did try what I said and viola there next kills were exceptional exits and blood trails that were less than fifty yards. Personally I’ve never taken my 6.5 CM hunting, I just plink steel from 300 yards to a mile. I did just buy some 140 grain Speer bonded bullets that I might try this year.
6.5 cm and speed don't go in the same sentence to begin with. Throwing a 16-in barrel and that's rough. You're not getting any faster unless you drop bullet weight

Just before I shot my 6.5 CM though my chronograph I helped a guy sight in his 6.5 PRC and with a 147gr eldm 24" barrel his gun was 2834 fps. Surprised the hell out of me. If it ever quits raining here I'm going to do a latter test.

You should try alpha ocd brass. I am pushing well over max without heavy bolt lift. Gained 100+ fps and brass is on 3 and 4 reload no issues.

You need to get a 6.5-300 weatherby mag. My wife got me one for Christmas last year.

@ it’s definitely a great cartridge especially if your a 1 gun guy but they’re are a lot of better options

Monolithic would give you a combination of lower weight and good BC.
So in theory I would still be in the same boat?
I am pushing a 121 gr Flatline bullet at over 3100 fps out of my 6.5cm. (BC: 0.637).
What length barrel?

I'm getting a average of 3066 FPS with the 140gr eldx with my Browning with a 26" barrel using the stable 6.5. Getting .62 groups.
