  • Hooniverse.com's Jeff Glucker spends a week with the Audi SQ5. It's a competent compact crossover, but it is worthy of the S badge that it wears? Instead of just puttering around near the coast, Glucker heads to Mulholland to find out.

Great effort! thanks, I am considering buying one. Do you think it is the better option rather than X3 or Stelvio?

Jeff, I already responded to another of your reviews for this car. I'm a Bay Area native; we have gorgeous roads here. Please come up to Northern California to do your test drives. Here's what happened for me: I had an A4 Avant 1.8 T when I was younger. I hold on to cars for a very long time (thanks to lessons from my amazing dad), so after I gave up my 1985 Saab 900s, I got that 2001 Audi. In the Fall of 2013 I found myself in a different financial place, with that A4 getting tired, and able to afford more. My husband had been a BMW guy forever. When his 2001 331 ci decided it was too tired, I said "try the Audi S5. I think you'll like it". He took a test drive, and that was it. Say no more. Well, then it was time for me. I had to get an S-model. So...enter the SQ5. Our fleet now consists of the SQ5, S5, and old A4 Avant. My husband is an Audi convert; I couldn't be more thrilled! Thanks for your great reviews of Audi.

      Scott Campbell
Scott, thanks for your message. With all due respect, it's simply a matter of preference. When my husband's BMW 330ci went out to pasture, he was about to get more of the same. I suggested he try an Audi S5 instead. He did, and he was hooked. He just can't believe the performance of that car. An April 2014 Car and Driver article compared the Audi S5 to the BMW 435i and said: "If the S5 didn’t exist, the 435i would feel great. BMW’s problem is that the S5 does exist." BMW is a great brand, but for us, it's Audi all the way at the moment.

Scott, my husband DID test an M3 when his 330ci died, and when he drove the S5, for him there was no comparison. So yes, I do think it's a matter of preference. And not many have even seen an RS5, let alone own one or have test-driven one. But I'm not interested in engaging Car Wars. Audi enthusiasts just want to share their experiences and enthusiasm. If you love BMW as your Number One, that's great and I'm glad you're happy with your car, but why not compare notes with other BMW fans? It's sort of like people who view music videos of artists they don't like and then make negative comments. At least we agree on one thing: GERMAN is top notch. :-)

NatureGirl62 So very timely! This evening, one day after my previous post, I stopped at the market on my way home from work and as I was parking I saw a guy pulling away in an RS5! Still, this is quite a rare sighting, not your everyday car. Take care, Scott!

I recently drove the Audi A3 sedan up in Northern California, and just got back from driving the new GTI up there. Beautiful part of the state.

Great to hear, Jeff! Thanks! There are so many amazing, beautiful, wild places here that are surprisingly close to San Francisco. Where did you drive?
