    QUESTION : Do you use the 8-25 f4 and what's your experience with it?

    • @gregdyer7227
      @gregdyer7227 15 дней назад +1

      I'm debating between 7-14mm f2.8 and the 8-25mm f4. Can't use my filters on the 7-14mm Is almost a deal breaker. No manual clutch on 8-25mm is almost a deal breaker. I use it a lot on my 12-40mm f2.8 pro II and 40-150mm f2.8 pro. I haven't purchased a lens slower than f2.8 in a long time so that is a factor also. I shoot family pictures indoors thats the reason I like faster glads I'm trying to decide what compromises I can live with. I think the 7-14mm not taking my filters is the deciding factor though. Do you have any more thoughts between the two?

    • @majamogens
      @majamogens 15 дней назад +3

      @@gregdyer7227 The 8-25 have a manual clutch. I also previously used f:2.8 lenses or primes with f:1.8, but with the 'new' AI programs for noise removal (I use PureRaw) I have no problems going up a single full stop in ISO with an f:4.0 - this also gives the advantage that I don't have problems with depth of field in portraits.

      Yes, I had it for a year now. I bought it cheap as refurbished from OM System. It was perfectly as new and with all warranty's. I love that lens so much. It's the one I mostly use. Perfect for landscaping and street photo.

      The 8-25 has a manual focus clutch so that one negative that you can forget about. I also onw the 7-14 f2.8 but this lens is quite likely going to be replaced by this 8-25. The distortion is much less then with the 7-14, the 7-14 is very, very very sensitive to flair! Much better with the 8-25 for as far I've experienced right now. And of course the 8-25 can take the filters. I see only positive except for the f4 but shooting mainly landscapes I rarely come lower the f5.6 usually around f8. Where are you from? If you live in Europe then send me a message first trough my website or Facebook/ instagram before you purchase. Might be able to help you out 🙂 thanks gor watching grt guido

    The Guido, a great episode, buddy! Oh yes, I know that when you have the requirement to take a photo. It is so fantastic when you go out then for the first time again 😊
    Congrats to your L-bracket. I had the same aha moment some years ago. Such a big difference for portrait-orientated shots, as you get rid of the leverage effect, which makes less chitter.
    You got some awesome photographs, I like them all. 👍
    Thank you for the video and nice greetings,

    Thanks, I traded in the 7-14 f2.8 for the 8-25 f4 and couldn't be happier. The new focal range suits me better and has more versatility. I don't need f2.8 for an ultra wide angle. As well, I found the 7-14 really big and heavy. Worse still, I found that the 7-14 really suffered when it had to deal directly with strong light sources like the sun - with such a wide angle it's hard to work the image around the sun. The 8-25 seems to have modern, excellent coatings. Hope this experience helps.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  14 дней назад

      I've been using it for tree weeks and I can only confirm what your saying. Today I took an image straight into the sun at f20 to create a nice sun star. That was absolutely impossible with the 7-14 the whole image would have been full of ugly flair. So I guess I already made up my mind. This is going to be my own purchase some day 😅 thanks for watching and sharing your experience! Grt guido

    The last 'minimalist' image of the small tree with its reflection in the ripples is wonderful. Normally I like long exposures, but in this case, the ripples add to the photo, giving it a 'moment in time' quality.
    I have bought and sold the 8-25 f/4 twice. Not because of the lens. It's a great lens. Because of me. I struggle with wide angle (6-12mm mft) compositions. 12-40/45 is the range I prefer.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  15 дней назад

      I also had a long exposure but I had the exact same feeling. I've put the black and white in the video but now I'm not so sure if I didn't prefer the colour version haha. I know! That focal range is very difficult. I experience the same with the 7-14 f2.8 but this is much easier. I'm only missing focal range from 26-39 now and I take a lot of images in that area. So I'm just gonna see if I can overcome that issue. Thanks for watching and your support I really appreciate it! Grt guido

    The 8-25 is one of my favourite lenses. I wasn't very excited about it when it was released, but since I've owned it I almost always take it with me. All the f/4 zooms, for me, are ideal for landscape travel. One thing to watch out about the 8-25 (and this is not specific to the lens, but to the wide focal length): at the wider end, be very, very careful about trusting IBIS at low shutter speeds, unless you're into psychedelic photography. In such conditions, IBIS works fine in the centre, but at the edges, due to extreme rotation movement, it can't cope. And you get some truly weird results 🙂

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  15 дней назад

      Ahh good tip with the ibis. I haven't noticed it myself untill now but I will keep an eye out for it. I just realised that with the 8-25 f4, 12-100 f4 and 100-400 youbhave an exceptional focal range in an extrene lightweight kit. Thanks for watching and your comment. Grt guido

  • @majamogens
    @majamogens 15 дней назад +2

    Thanks for another great video
    I also use the combination of 8-25 and 40-150 though both f:4.0.
    I had a 12-40, but I don't miss it - I prioritize low weight.
    Something completely different is - can't you use your contacts at OM-Systems to convince them that we miss a 25-100 f:4.0 lens? It will perfectly fill the 'gap' between 8-25 and 100-400 all f:4.0.
    Again - something completely different is that I would really like a camera to replace the em-1x by making a round sensor, so that an L-bracket is not necessary, since you then 'just' choose to see the image in portrait format, possibly cropped JPG to the format, while RAW is full image - that would also mean that with a fisheye lens you would have something 'extra' to fill in the image when de-fisheying.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  15 дней назад +1

      A 25-100 sounds nice but I doubt that they will ever make that. They already have the 12-100 f4 Pro wich covers that complete focal range and it's one of the best lenses they've made. I don't see the benefit of a round sensor. You will need a massive round sensor to get the same amount of pixels after cropping. It would definitely be a shocker if some brand came up with that. But with the sensors now you make most benefit of the pixels. With a round sensor you will always loose a lot of the pixels to nothing. All 4 corners will always be useless. The em1x is a great camera! But I can assure you that the om-1 goes far beolyond that one. I never missed my em1x for a day. I you like the grip then you can just attach one when needed. Thanks for watching and your comment. Who knows maybe they will surprise us someday! Grt guido

    Hello Guido, many thanks for sharing your photo experience. Yes, I also have this 8-25 mm. In fact, the main reason for me to choose the MFT format was because I anticipated the huge capabilities of this lens from very wide angle to normal... As a photographer, I was very pleased with it.
    Unfortunately, my goal was manly to switch from stills to videos. After two years, I should say that it's f4.0 max aperture is a big limitation for video. However, when I do "run and gun" movies, following a group of friend for example, I deeply like the 8 mm capabilities and its limited weight.
    But to take movies from my little grand daughter, I had to buy the Leic 10-25. It's maximum aperture of 1.7 makes a real difference. The bokeh it produces and the quality of movies obtained under low light scenes is much better than with a f4 limitation. Otherwise, between those two lenses I don't find much difference in terms of sharpness.

    Guido, I very much like this focal range for a wide angle lens, but like most wide angle lenses it is typically more suited to open and expansive landscapes. It doesn't work so well in busy woodlands or forests. I tend to use this lens for more traditional landscapes and love it for that. What I would like to see from OM Systems is a complimentary lens for the 8-25mm, one with a longer reach, say a 25-125mm f4 pro lens. That would a great focal range for the woodland photography I do and I would buy such a lens in a heartbeat subject to decent image quality. Good close-up ability would be a bonus.

Ik kwam het ook tegen in mijn nieuw gevonden boek OM-5 boek van Reinhard Wagner of eigenlijk een pdf, die je zelf kunt printen als je dit wilt (slim bedacht). Wel op zijn Duits, maar hé je kunt niet alles hebben. Hij legt wel duidelijk uit wat je met de camera allemaal kunt doen ... de voors en de tegens. Over de basisinstellingen ... waarom je iets zou veranderen etc. Ben ik blij mee. Ik denk dat ik nu ook C4 zelf in kan stellen, haha. Er zijn intussen best een aantal RUclipss waarin het nodige wordt uitgelegd, maar meestal voor de OM-1. Dus ... als enthousiast leerling ga ik het uitproberen.

    I will be very interested in knowing how often you use the 8-11mm range. I own the 12-60mm and the 40-150mm f2.8. I am debating whether to buy the 8-25mm or the 7-14mm. Do you find yourself wishing for the 7mm vs the 8mm? And would you miss the 25-40mm range if you only had the 8-25 and 40-150? Thanks. Lovely images. My favorite image from this video is the landscape with the three pine trees. I guess I shouldn’t say this but it is nice to know that even great photographers go through low periods. Glad you finally got into it again. Best wishes for 2025!

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  14 дней назад

      I've been using the 8-25 for 2 weeks now and it still surprises me. What i love is that I look at wider image more often then I used to just because it's on the camera. In all the years that I photograph I have only used the 7mm once in a keeper image. So I guess I'm willing to make that sacrifice ( you will see that I come across them more often now). Over the past 2 weeks I've only taken the 8-25 and the 40-150 and yes there is a gap from 26-39 but that is something I usually can solve with my feet. That is untiill now. I can really feel the weight difference of 1 lens instead of the 7-14 and the 12-40 so untill now I'm really convinced by this lens. Yes it's f4 but I rarely photograph lower then f5.6 in my landscapes. I guess we all have our ups and downs. For me it's normal during the winter period. I always seem te struggle my way trough winter. Thanks for watching and your kind comment. Grt guido

      I don't see any different when I use a high res or normal image. You have to make sure that you use the right mode. So tripod on a tripod and handheld when handholding the camera. Als don't push the shutter speed to slow the camera takes 8 images that it combines. If there is slight movement in leaves then it's gonna be blurry in the result. I mainly use hightrs when I know in want to crop the aspect ratio of the image. Thanks for watching grt guido

      Untill now I'm very amazed by this lens. I've been using it now for 2 weeks and am really thinking about replacing the 7-14 f2.8. But if I take this lens then I will probably also leave the 12-40 f2.8 ta home to reduce some weight. But haven't figured out if the loss of focal range between 25 and 40 will effect me. Thanks for watchibg and sharing you thoughts. Grt guido

      @GuidoVanDeWater Just take your 40-150 f2.8 with you but you'd be missing 26mm-39mm lol but then again we can zoom with our feet to compensate that little loss; )

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  15 дней назад +1

      @HotGates yes we can zoom with our feet but if I look trough my catalog i seem to take a lot of images between 30 and 40mm so I will have to get used to that 😅

      @GuidoVanDeWater maybe you should consider not to buy the 8-25mm f4, but the 12-100 f4 instead. Its a better and sharper lens imo and a superior travel lens. I bet you own this lens. Im thinking of buying it this year.

    when i buy my em1 III i doubt start with 12-40 2.8 or 8-25 f4 with the plan of pick up the another one and the 40-150 f4 in a future, i choose the 8-25 and now my doubt is go to complete with 12-40 2.8 and 40-150 f4 or forget this two and pick 40-150 2.8 and only manage 2 lens

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  14 дней назад

      If you already own the 8-25 then I would not go for the 12-40. I would go for the 40-150. Depends on your needs if you go for the 2.8 of the 4 they are both great. Thanks for watching and sharing you thoughts. Grt guido

      My main use is for landscape and travel, but i like shoot cars in rally or circuit and when i do with my 8-25 i want more speed (and range too) and i think 2.8 make a diference but practically dobles the weight and be less practical for travel, on the other hand the 2.8 have fn-button and mf clutch like the 8-25 and the same filter size and the teleconverters, 🤔 i want the 2.8 😅

      @ulvensjeler5494 I love the 2.8! I was really surprised by the quality of the f4 but the f2.8 is just next level. For what you want to do it think the 2.8 will be a great addition! Where are you from? Grt guido

      @ my first idea was 12-40 for action and night and 8-25 for wide and 40-150 f4 for tele during day but at start in 8-25 and use it, it like me more and more and only in action moments i need more speed and some times i want reach but 8-25 and 12-40 are so similar and in mayor times can use one or another adn i think the 25-40 space can supply walk arround and the better choice for me is 8-25 f4 + 40-150 2.8 and i can do all with this two with the same weight of the 3 lenses kit and with less lens changes.
      thanks from Spain

    Is there any benefit in taking the shot in B&W in the camera over converting from color in post?

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  9 дней назад +1

      I never thought it did, but it really helped me to see the compositions better. Somehow, in black and white, it's totally different. It's all about contrast. I've seen compositions that seemingly never worked get interesting when I looked at the in black and white. And of course you can enhance that by using special color filters. Wonderful video Guido. Inwas wondering, how often do you shoot the 40-150mm at F2.8 for landscape? It's too heavy for my old back, so I was thinking going all F4 lenses for landscape. The 8-25 F4, 12-45 F4 one 40-150 F4. How much of a problem would that be for someone like yourself?

    • @GuidoVanDeWater

      As a landscape photographer i rarely photograph underneath the f5.6 so you will probably not miss anything on that behalve. I just love my 40-150 f2.8 so that will never leave the bag. I think you would have a great set of lenses. Thanks for watching grt guido

    Hi Guido
    Very informative video. I am thinking of replacing the 7-14mm with the 8-25mm so this was a helpful video. Also, I have just purchased a three legged thing Ollie so that I can switch easily from landscape to portrait. However, I am having difficulty fitting the Ollie in portrait. I have a Arca-Swiss fitting attached the camera which works perfectly in landscape but I am lost when I try to switch to portrait. I appear to have a fitting problem. Is there another part or am I missing brain cells!! I am using a manfrotto ball head MH494. I am really feeling very stupid. I purchased the Ollie from eBay. No instructions included.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater

      I don't know what goes wrong. I can just put the camera in horizontal position and the it fits perfectly. You have to adjust it a little so it doesn't fall exactly in the gap of the L bracket. But if you watch out for that then it should be OK. Thanks for watching and sharing your comment. Grt guido

      @@GuidoVanDeWater Thank you for responding. All sorted now. I required a Arca Swiss adapter to fit to my Manfrotto ball head. Works perfectly now. Although, I agree you have to be careful with the gap in portrait mode. I forgot to mention in my initial response that your images were as usual outstanding. Glad to hear that you are getting out in the field again. Colin

    Hoi Guido
    Fijn, dat je er weer op uit kon trekken. Luister naar je lichaam. Als dat zegt ga naar buiten, doe dat dan ook,en geniet er van. Mooie foto’s. Zwart/wit moet je liggen. Het kan wel, maar je compositie moet ijzer sterk zijn wil dat goed uitpakken. Je kleuren opnamen vind ik erg geslaagd. De 8-25 is een mooie lens. Wel grappig dat je de zonnekap niet gebruikte, was misschien ook niet nodig. Ik blijf je ook in 2025 weer gewoon volgen. Ik leer er een hoop van .

      Nornaal gebruik ik de zonnekap altijd. Ik zal je eerlijk zeggen dat ik pas in de auto bedacht dat de zonnekap erop zat haha ik heb nu een keuze stand op zwart wit geprogrammeerd zodat ik er op locatie wat mer rekening mee kan houden. Ik heb die laatste 2 fotos omgezet in zwart wit maar toen ik vanochtend de video zat terug te kijken begon ik te twijfelen. Ik denk achreraf toch dat de lichte kleuren versie beter was. Bedankt voor je support afgelopej jaren. Hopelijk blijf je de videos in 2025 ook inyeresant vinden! Grt guido

    Grappig, ik kom deze video net tegen op RUclips dankzij een of ander algoritme. Ik ben je die ochtend tegengekomen op het pad net voordat je bij dat minimalistische boompje geraakte. Ik heb je nog gedag gezegd en had nog op mijn lippen om te zeggen 'pssst....ietsje verderop rechts.....een lief klein boompje in het water'.
    Maar je leek wat in gedachten verzonken dus bij mij kwam het er ook niet van. Zo gaat dat soms. Maar ik zie nu dat je het ook ontdekt had. Ik was daar net wat aan het spelen met mijn OM5 die ik voor mijn laatste Schotland trip gekocht had omdat ik niet zo'n zin meer heb om met al het fullframe spul te sleuren.
    De Hatertse Vennen is een plek waar ik al heeeel lang en vaak kom. Ook redelijk dichtbij mijn huis.
    We zullen elkaar nog wel eens tegenkomen denk ik bij de Vennen.

      Dat is wel heel toevallig inderdaad. Zou google de locaties monitoren? Was dit de eerste video die je van mij zag? Haha ik zie ze er wel voor in staat 😅 ik kan het me zo biet herrineren. Wel dat ik wat mensen tegen kwam maar kan er geen gezichten bij vinden. Vlak voor dat ik dat boompje zag stond ik bovenop die heuvel een tijdje met iemand te praten die ik toevallig tegenkwam en al een tijdnniet gezien had. Het kan dus zomaar zijn dat ik even in gedachten was toen ik daar liep. Ik woon in beuningen en kom hier dus ook met regelmaat als je me nog eens ziet spreek me gerust aan hoor. Volgens mij ben ik best een aardig iemand haha 😅 bedankt voor het kijken in elk geval! Grt guido

      @@GuidoVanDeWater How happy I will be the day, when they start specifying a lens's range based on its image angles/degrees, instead of the mm number - then it will be 'almost' unimportant what sensor format is behind it.

    Every time I put that lens on my camera I’m amazed at what it does, and then wonder why I bother with the longer focal lengths! But of course the longer ones always go on for something afterwards. Yes, the f4’s suit me too, 99% of the time. I’ve hardly been out since November too, when our heatwave began, and I loathe the heat! Loved the minimalist tree, pity about the ducks, but they looked great too. Thanks for sharing your video.
