The La Jolla Reefs were as big as it gets on December 29th, 2023. This was the morning session on Day 3 of the New Years Swell. There were not many options of places to paddle out that morning except a couple. Early in the morning, Skip McCullough decided to head out to this line up alone. He wanted to be the first person in the water. Soon after his of compadres paddled out after him. The sets were absolutely bombing and you had to be extremely selective. Especially at this notoriously shifty reef break. Sometimes waves would come in lined up and other times just massive close out lines. This particular reef is definitely not a place you want to get caught inside because you can get stuck in the zone. Some of the other featured riders in this video include Mick Davey, Tosh Tudor, and only a few others who braved the paddle out and the bombs out back.

The shoe
Typically surfers will wear booties in the winter time as part of their wetsuits, not usually reef shoes. They save those for the tropical areas when having to walk over the reef. lol.
