The amount of anxiety I got when I saw the knife going towards their fingers is insane. I always cut outwards bc I’m scared to cut my fingers but props to ya. It looks like you’ve been doing it for some time but aaaahh just me lol
I’m my experience, it’s harder to cut outwards. I’ve always pulled toward myself when cutting because my hands and thumb have more control than my wrist
If it is going towards the same hand that's holding the knife it is very hard to cut yourself. Most wood workers I know cut towards themselves. It allows more consistent force.
I was just going to comment something like this. I was getting so much anxiety because a few days ago i had to have surgery because i cut the tendon on my pointer finger.

When whittling stuff I find that although mistakes do happen, this technique used to carefully peel off shavings for some reason doesn’t have as much momentum after the cut to fly back and cut u. It also makes it really easy to make fine tuned cuts on a piece because you are naturally being extra careful not to cut yourself
Just a psa cause this is the internet and you never know who might need to hear this advice: if you decide to go to woodwork by hand like this; do not cut towards yourself, your stomach or your hands. This person looks like they're well versed in this field, but even still it can lead to serious harm. That wood is hard, and that knife slides through it like butter or an apple. Imagine your stomach and guts now. Be safe, be cautious and act accordingly. Never slice towards yourself or your body. Don't use your fingers as helping tools, and don't put the wood on your legs when you cut into it. That's at least three safety advices that can spare you a lot of pain, and, depending on where in the world you are, a lot of medical bills.
