Glad you're covering this show! I vaguely remember the 1980 mini series. So far I'm impressed. Japanese period pieces are fascinating to me and it makes me want to watch some Kurosawa.
Did you not watch the second episode through to the end? If you did, it should be obvious that the priests were behind the assassination attempt. One of the priest has a conversation with one of the Catholic lords, and that Lord specifically says he'll take care of the problem. After the attempt, Tornaga specifically says he traded places with Blackthorn, having John sleep in his room while he slept in John's, and that the attack was meant to kill John. So it was clearly the priests. Toronaga specifically baited the priest to see if they would rise to the challenge. He was testing them exactly as John had tested the earlier vassal by giving him the rope.
@@masafak He got the information about the porteguese base in Macau from the priest in the prison. But I think it was a lie when he said it was the reason why they had to go around S America

Episode 2 was very good, I loved the flash back at the start and I loved the scene of Blackthorne explaining his knowledge of the world by drawing in the sand and all the interactions between him and honestly any Japanese character I found interesting.
Can you talk about the deeper mental states the Japanese portray throughout the episodes? For example, the guy was boiled alive because that other dude (the one who fell to the water and about to kill himself) has some fixation with how people face their death. He had a moment of exaltation when he realized it was his end and faced it with honor!
Yabu is twisted and is a traitor. In the novels, Toranaga uses him to his advantage because he knows his thirst for power blinds him from truly achieving his goals. In the book he meditates all night while the youngest of the crew is boiled alive and they all had to draw straws while in the pit. Blackthorn wanted to go in his place, and the whole village was left in anguish due to the cry's all night. Yabu has his son, the leader of the village name a stone after the dreadful night. And in the book, the kid was only 15 years old and he sleeps with he and the courtesan.
Was there a reason they executed the guy besides wanting to watch him die? Also why did they boil him alive? The other people were beheaded when they were executed. I just wanted to understand why they chose that method of execution and the reason for the execution, if anyone knows?

There is a historical fact that's slightly overviewed/dismissed in this show so far. Portugal was under Spain domain during that period (1580-1640) therefore not being independent. It places Portugal vs England rivalry while they actually have the oldest alliance in the world since 1386 with the Treaty of Windsor. Great show so far. Nevertheless those technicalities would add more value.
But the Portuguese were able to administer the management of 3:03 their empire as they saw fit. Thus it was the Portuguese who first had business dealings with the Japanese overlords, not the Spanish.
Portugal was not under Spain's domain. That is a common misconception. Portugal was an independent Kingdom with the same ruler as Spain. It was "two Kingdoms, one ruler" and not only one Kingdom. In all the documents, flags, generals, nobility and ownership of lands, Portugal and Spain were separated. The only thing that was the same was the king, which was a descendent of the Portuguese king who had died without heirs. Therefore, he inherited the Portuguese crown, as he had inherited the Spanish crown (there was some fighting, but he did have a claim to the Portuguese crown). So, obviously, since the king was the same for the two kingdoms, Portugal and Spain acted together during that time period with the same goals and everything. However, money and lands and nobility were separated, and Portugal was not de jure, nor de facto part of Spain.

No sorry It was not, but there was an other legendary actor playing Toranaga: Toshiro Mifune. About this one it seems pretty cool but maybe some mistake here too? For example: Lady Kiri is Toranaga's wife she can't add the "sama" to Mariko's name because Mariko is socially inferior. So it should be Mariko > Kiri = Kiri Sama Kiri > Mariko = Mariko San
Deviates from the book is quite a few spots but I gotta remember its inspired by not a straight adaption. The 80s Shogun was the more faithful adaption so far
I'm a bit confused but from what I thought Yoshii is Ieyasu Blackthorn is Adam Ishido is ishida The leprosy daimyo is Uesugi Kenshin. (He looks like Kenshin but he ain't no monk though...) Lady Maria (I forget her Japanese name) is the daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide.
Why did Ishido allow John B to get “rescued” when he was being transported if he gets the votes as a result of him being executed? I’m confused by it because what does he gain by stalling further if he wanted the vote right then and there when he informed the other lords that JB was already imprisoned?
Then the power would be imbalanced and he would be outnumbered by the other two Christian Regents. Remember that their "game" is every man for himself and if they vote Toranaga to die early on, then he would be their next target since the other two regents are united under their Christian faith.
@@Mr-tr1us thank you for your response! Wouldn’t he be outnumbered with or without JB being executed? I thought the first means of the vote was to impeach Toranaga first (which is already a death sentence if I understand correctly) Sorry if it’s a dumb question.
Shogun (2024) premiered with a beautifully shot action packed pair of episodes that drew universal critical acclaim and inevitable comparisons to "Game Of Thrones"...despite the fact that the Shogun novel preceded A Song Of Ice & Fire by about two decades. This version of Shogun does improve upon the 1980 adaption of Shogun starring Richard Chamberlain by focusing more heavily on its Asian cast and the political intrigue in James Clavell's original novel, but it also lacks the epic feel and sense of wonder found in the original adaption. I LOVE what I've seen so far... but parts of what I've seen has been a little rushed. Roughly nine hours was enough time to faithfully adapt the 800 page "A Game Of Thrones." Can Shogun be adapted equally as well in about the same amount of hours, despite it's novel being 1,300 pages? I have my doubts. but I'm anxious to see if next weeks episodes will be as amazing as these two. It's shaping up to be the best show I've seen in YEARS.
There are more than 200 “ Christians” denomination. They all say they’re Christian’s but they believe in different things. So, yes Protestantism and Catholicism are two different religions that say they’re Christians. That difference is what make Protestants separate from Catholicism and create their own religion, a different one.
I get the Catholic v Protestant beefs during and after the Reformation, but it’s still well after the Anglo-Portuguese alliance from 1373 that still technically persists. And it was actually Dutch ships & some crew with the English pilot who were also Protestants and English allies. So, I’m trying yo square all this lol

Same question as the other guy but it is because the power would be imbalanced. It would benefit Ishido to keep Toranaga alive if it means that the other two Christian Regents were kept from hoarding the power. He simply would be outnumbered if he erased John out of the equation early on. I think that Ishido noticed that if he killed John early on, then Toranaga was killed, then he would be at a disadvantage given how the other regents are united under their faith. It's in his best interest to keep John alive.
That was how it is for them, he disrespected his Lord's rival, so as to not put a black mark on his liege he took the honourable death route and made sure his Lord faces no humiliation. The Bushido code and loyalty these samurai had was very fanatic. The faith they had was only in their lord and the land they live in. They didn't fear death, their religion and culture was such then Now it all seems bizarre and over but at that time it was a normal thing, hence people then used to be very respectful, disciplined, loyal and resolute. If you missed any of it then death is the only punishment.
After the Battle of Sekigahara, and the siege of Osaka castle and finally Tokugawa Shogunate coming into power Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) 1615, abolished Christianity, drove off all the Catholics, foreigners, closed off country till 1830s. Tokugawa Shogunate ruled the land for 200 years with brute military force and massacres Christians and almost reduced them to 0. Very few went underground and survived. After the Sengoku warring period ended in 1603, after the Battle of Sekigahara, The Edo Period (1603-1868) was quite dark in Japanese History.
@@Dr.KP08In 1721, Edo was the largest metropolis in the world with a population of 1,000,000; the second largest was London with 630,000. The Edo Period was the flourishing era with no wars, not the darkest.
@@kengo7273 might have misspelled, definitely not darkest, but was dark indeed. A closed nation with people ruled over by one ruler with military forces, police officer/samurai brutal, and many savages on loose. Edo/Tokyo may have been flourishing, not so much the other lands
@@Dr.KP08 The population of Japan in 1721 was 26,000,000. The Tokugawa shogunate just limited its trading partners to the Netherlands and the Qing Dynasty so Japan was not a closed nation. It's the same system as today; President or Prime Minister = one ruler, Military and Plice.
I'm surprised that the show is more "toned down" than the book. For example in the book Lord Yabu is a very sick guy and gets off on the screams of dying men and one of his servant's threw himself to his death to distract him from killing himself in the cliff scene. You'd think the show would keep the most "extreme" parts of the book for dramatic value but they're smoothing over that stuff.
if you have the read the book you will see they make some very different (and IMO detrimental) changes to the story and stray away from book storyline. I have no idea why.. also love that Toranaga is centered (as book intended) but all the foreigners reduced to idiots (new Blackthorne thus far is an idiot). New Father Alvito is downright horrid (and a historical.. they shaved his head like a Franciscan frair, he was a JESUIT).. changed the assassin.. changed reason why Blackthorne went to prison and how/why he got out. Changed his famous line with Toranaga .. which about "if you win" .. etc etc etc .. Like the re centering and palace intrigue but didn't like episode 2. though if Yabu's courtesan was that hot.. cannot wait to see Kiku in the future :) notice how they made Yabu and importantly Ishidio younger and more virile/less fat? Ishido no longer looks like a buffoon. Japanese characters all improved.. (though no one can beat Toshiro Mifune), too early to say for Mariko.. though Lord Buntaro less imposing.. Western characters all made to look like buffoons.. including Blackthorne
So far it does not do justice to the original miniseries, failing to highlight much of the cultural aspects of the original, and hasn't even explored Bushido. Hopefully the coming episodes will be better.
A better way than using straight English as being Portuguese, would have been to use English but replace some key words like "Priest" with "Padre" or "Thank you" for "Obrigado". It is done in world war 2 movies when they speak English for German and say things like "fraulein" instead of "miss". The way it is done in the show is just confusing, stupid and slightly offensive to the Portuguese.

Deviates from the book is quite a few spots but I gotta remember its inspired by not a straight adaption. The 80s Shogun was the more faithful adaption so far
Very hard to beat the 80s Shogun.
This new one is better
Next chapter please it's so good.
Just like the book
I'm a bit confused but from what I thought
Yoshii is Ieyasu
Blackthorn is Adam
Ishido is ishida
The leprosy daimyo is Uesugi Kenshin. (He looks like Kenshin but he ain't no monk though...)
Lady Maria (I forget her Japanese name) is the daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide.
Why did Ashido care whether John was executed or not, and approve of the plan to have him returned back to Toregama?
Que série incrível ! Me surpreendi com a qualidade dessa produção, absurda.
This show is shaping up to be good. I like the intrique thats going on
the show is really superb
It really is!
I swear if they have blackthorne fall in love with the princess im gonna lose it.
Lmao why 😂
Then you're definitely gonna lose it. 😅
That definitely feels like it's on the cards
Princess?
She is not a princess. She is the daughter of a traitorous Daimyo Akechi Mitsuhide. The betrayer of Oda clan.
Wow so the assassin was after ingles and not the Lord?! This is getting good!
They know the threat that is present!
Was pretty obvious. Lord Ichiro needed blackthorn dead so the other members of the council will vote on toronaga.
They literally say this at the end of the ep, it wasnt a secret
I pray John's "THIS SHOW RULES!" becomes a Twitter meme like his Madame Web reaction did the other week.
Needed this, watched the first two eps stoned
This guy is really into the Blackthorn character too, he's in some zone
To me, perfect
I thought the first means of the vote was to impeach Toranaga first (which is already a death sentence if I understand correctly)
Sorry if it’s a dumb question.
Dude thought this is really promising, glad it didn’t suck!
Great video.
Why do you say he put poison in his ear when all he did was tell him the truth?
Finally a good show about Jesuit fuckery. Such an interesting time in history and nobody touches it.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi got furious when he learned that the Jesuits were selling Japanese abroad as slaves.
Its gonna win an emmy
It's definitely got great quality to it!
why did you use the word poison when he just revealed the truth that Portugal is not the only country in the West! choice of word threw me away!
They did so well in these first two episodes
I agree! It was awesome!
Is the 'religious' guy in prison,, the most interesting man in the world,, from Dos XX???
This is my new favorite show…let’s go 😂
Yeah I can't wait to see what happens next!
Interesting ? ! !
Is mind-blowingly Awesome: finally some high quality TV series !
Yeah it's a great show!
@@BrainPilot ❤
Just realised that you have some great stuff !
Subbed and stay Awesome !
Ngl I watched 3 episodes in a row felt like 10 minutes ❤
Yeah it flies by it's that good!
*two religions
Protestantism and Catholicism are still Christian.
There are more than 200 “ Christians” denomination. They all say they’re Christian’s but they believe in different things. So, yes Protestantism and Catholicism are two different religions that say they’re Christians. That difference is what make Protestants separate from Catholicism and create their own religion, a different one.
This is what rings of power billion dollar production should have been
You know nothing John Blackthorn (about Japan)
I get the Catholic v Protestant beefs during and after the Reformation, but it’s still well after the Anglo-Portuguese alliance from 1373 that still technically persists. And it was actually Dutch ships & some crew with the English pilot who were also Protestants and English allies. So, I’m trying yo square all this lol
holy, the show is so good
Don't watch much TV then. Its fair at best.
@@andrewschliewe6392 oh i know sooner a later a "critic" will appear.
@@TelpPov So what do you call the crappy camera work? its like looking through a fish bowl. The only thing in focus was the center of the screen everything around it was blurry. heck you had the face in focus but go down below the neck and its all blurry.
@@andrewschliewe6392 pathetic this is the only “fault” you can use to argue ur point. I stand corrected
The Portuguese and Spanish didn't divide up Japan. They made an agreement with the Pope and the Catholic Church to divide up undiscovered lands and Japan fell in the Portuguese sphere.
if youve played nioh, that first decapitation omg. i rewound that scene 3 times looks exactly like the human enemy decapitation animation. and its same story minus yokai and with names changed
Awesome show
It really is!
This show is incredible. Finally a good F show!!!!
Did anyone watch the 1980s series with Richard Chamberlain? I haven't watched this retake. Where can I view it? Thanks
Love the show so far only thing I didn’t like was them trying to pass. Off English for Portuguese it was really confusing at the beginning lol 😅
Yeah I thought that too lol
The dude boiling alive was awful because it lasted so damn long, i thought he would have died pretty quickly.
Yeah that looked horrific!
I’m glad I stumbled upon this show, so far it’s an awesome watch. When did they start showing nudity on tv shows?
The writing and the acting is really good. It keeps you interested on what’s going to happen next
Nudity in TV shows? Did you miss Game Of Thrones?
@@bobthestinky7369 yea but game of thrones was on HBO or CINAMAX whichever one. I didn’t think FX was that kind of broadcasting
Where are you guys watching it ? How are you guys watching the two episodes
The first two are on Disney in the UK and Hulu/FX in the states! Not sure about the rest of Europe and other countries
Disney+ Poland
Disney + Singapore
Disney+ Sweden
Hulu USA
My thoughts, is in your pinned message and more power to you're channel
How good! LFG!
So why is Ishido in first instance keeping John alive? I mean he's just a 'foreigner' and killing him would mean that Ishido's plan could go through
Same question as the other guy but it is because the power would be imbalanced.
I love this show so far. However the whole speaking Portuguese by eay of English is so distracting. I can read subtitles damn it
So, Tadayoshi killed himself and his son for disrespecting the council?
That was how it is for them, he disrespected his Lord's rival, so as to not put a black mark on his liege he took the honourable death route and made sure his Lord faces no humiliation.
The Bushido code and loyalty these samurai had was very fanatic.
The faith they had was only in their lord and the land they live in. They didn't fear death, their religion and culture was such then
Now it all seems bizarre and over but at that time it was a normal thing, hence people then used to be very respectful, disciplined, loyal and resolute. If you missed any of it then death is the only punishment.
After the Battle of Sekigahara, and the siege of Osaka castle and finally Tokugawa Shogunate coming into power
Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) 1615, abolished Christianity, drove off all the Catholics, foreigners, closed off country till 1830s.
Tokugawa Shogunate ruled the land for 200 years with brute military force and massacres Christians and almost reduced them to 0. Very few went underground and survived.
After the Sengoku warring period ended in 1603, after the Battle of Sekigahara,
The Edo Period (1603-1868) was quite dark in Japanese History.
You kind of have to pick and choose when it comes to adaptations. I thought boiling the man alive and feeding off of his screams was brutal.
What time period is this show set?
Early 1200s?
1300s?
1600s
This show is mind blowing
It truly is!
if you have the read the book you will see they make some very different (and IMO detrimental) changes to the story and stray away from book storyline.
Jury is out for me still, small deviations from the book but significant ones
Is English dub available for anyone watching in the UK on Disney+ ?
Not that i've seen!
I don’t like the actor playing Blackthorn. He isn’t as relatable as Richard Chamberlain
To be fair it has only been two episodes!
I love this show
Yeah it's so good!
So far it does not do justice to the original miniseries, failing to highlight much of the cultural aspects of the original, and hasn't even explored Bushido. Hopefully the coming episodes will be better.
Don't you know?sengoku jidai era
Is it just me or does this remind me of the Impeding battle of Sekigahara but all the character are renamed
Can you really call John’s words “poison” if he’s telling the truth?
A better way than using straight English as being Portuguese, would have been to use English but replace some key words like "Priest" with "Padre" or "Thank you" for "Obrigado". It is done in world war 2 movies when they speak English for German and say things like "fraulein" instead of "miss". The way it is done in the show is just confusing, stupid and slightly offensive to the Portuguese.
Competence; It seems like the Asians are making all the quality shows.
Show goes hard as fuck
I honestly thought I could understand Portuguese for some reason 🤷♂️
technically it's still the 16th century
The whole thing of them saying that they are speaking Portuguese when they speak English is weird and confusing.
I know what you mean, I did think that at first!
