Damien Trainor’s Combos explained: Fake Roundhouse in to reverse elbow

- FAKE ROUNDHOUSE to REVERSE ELBOW COMBO: Here’s a quick combo that incorporates a number of practical techniques which you can drill on the bag.
Fake left roundhouse
Right reverse elbow
Frame
Right elbow
Left body punch
Right elbow
Knee defence
Left elbow
Right elbow
Double right kick.
The fake roundhouse kick is used to set up the reverse elbow. If the opponent blocks Thai style or Dutch style then it means they are stationary for that spilt second as they’re preparing for the kick. With them planted in one spot and worrying about the kick you’ll be able to get the elbow through the middle quite easy.
After the elbow I come back on myself (some people choose to spin right through) the reason I come back (this bag is a great example) is if the opponent doesn’t move back when I strike then the chances of me getting jammed up and unable to spin through becomes very high. Neither is right or wrong just preference. After the elbow I frame (this could even be a Thai long guard) this is to disrupt the opponent for a spilt second. After this I step in and go right elbow, left body punch, right elbow again (attacking high, low, high).
With you being close, the opponent may try to clinch and knee, so from here I disrupt their clinch attempt and fire two elbows straight away.....and finally I finish the combo with a double right kick.
Doubling the kick can be for a number of things. It could be that the first kick is defended and they wouldn’t be expecting another one straight away....or the main one (for training) is to build up the endurance in your legs to get used to throwing a lot of kicks.
The repetitive kicking in MT training has the same thought process as the long combinations drills I do (and many others)....It’s to help build up your overall output. I often get comments from people who say “that combination is too long and it would never work in a fight” without actually reading the description that explains the process 😂. You’re probably never going to land 10, 20, 30 repetitive kicks on someone either but again just like the combo drills this is to help with your overall output. 😉
