- ELEX is a big sprawling adventure that can't decide if it wants to be a medieval fantasy, a sci-fi adventure, or a post-apocalyptic survival game, and so ends up being all three at the same time.

He didn't take the cocking adventurer's amulet. Obligatory perception joke.
And this thing is so good. +1 lockpicking and +5 armour. Very helpful at the start of the game. And the lockpicking is useful to not waist that many learning points on that skill.
Is it still negative perception if he points out the item, but doesn't pick it up?
Martyn Wilkinson
No, but most of the time, he flat-out ignores it. Frustrating to watch at times.
It's -2 points, because he acknowledges that it's there and still manages to miss it.
he also missed the bow and arrow in the closet
This game was absolutely amazing its brutal at first but gets much better as the game goes along please keep playing
Andi hate PB (still) doing that.... Other games have shown you can amke difficult games without making the start like chewing gum, scaring every potential new player away. They're not doing themselves any favor with that horrible tradition...
Even if Gothic veterans like it that way.
The comments are confusing me, some people say this game is garbage but others say it's really good. I guess Jon wasn't lying about the game being for certain people.
Piranha Bytes games have always been like that. Quite divisive.
I loved the Gothic games, but couldn't get into this one, the mechanics and story were too much for me. But yes, it's very much a love it or hate it type of game. Either you immediately knew it was for you within the first couple minutes of gameplay, or you're sure it isn't.
glasspumpkin553 the majority of the poeple it's bad seem to think that because of Gothic, where as people who hasn't played it, love this game, maybe gothic 1 and 2 are masterpieces compared to this game and this game is good, but not if you play the other studios work
The Gothic 1 and 2 fanboys are simply viewing those games through rose-tinted nostalgia glasses. Really, they're not better in any way. It's like Nintendo fantards who still claim that Ocarina of Time is the best game, like, evar! Or Final Fantasy geeks who hold up FF7 as the greatest game ever. Really tedious to listen to.
It's mainly Gothic fanboys who would have like the exact same game for the 5th time. Otherwise with some rough edges Elex is actually quite good. That simple.
And Gothic had the exact same rough edges. The good old times weren't that good, they're just older.
Elex is not witcher 3 level of course. But it also didn't have remotely the budget and manpower of that.
Apparently, wanderers with Skyrim instincts are so common that the Berserkers have a test specifically to figure out who is willing to steal things just because someone asked them to.
Jon, if you like Elex, you absolutely HAVE to give Gothic 1 a try! It's absolutely ancient but is still an absolutely amazing game with a really rich world and lore. And it is not kidding at all. You start as an absolute nobody and the first couple of hours you will be right at the bottom of the food chain. And even 20 hours into the game you will stumble over a monster that will just instakill you if you don't run.
And it has factions. And your choices really matter a lot. It will seriously punish you for dumb actions or just plain bad luck.
agree~
If you can get it to start without crashing to desktop
Gothic is essentially the same formula, just a much less interesting setting. Also Gothic 1 is ancient by now. And 2 has some serious compatibility issues under Win10. Only reason to prefer it (today) is fanboyism.
No, Gothic 2. Or both.
Both would be great. But I think you should start with 1 to understand the story of 2. ;)
You didn't pick up the traveler's amulet.
Classic Jon.
*Adventurers amulet.
Save me rumu! My new favorite quote
"Are you here to trade, fight, or just add another mouth to the masses?" - Cinder
"I don't know; are you a companion, a shop, or a love interest?" - Jon
Blimey that was a bit forward Jon. And a bit pervy (just a bit.) 🤣
PERCEPTION: few first minutes, skips a hatchet and an axe that could replace the rusty one. Plus, never used the amulet.
Too lazy to check it in the video but you can't really use anything you find in these early stages. Which is sadly (still) the idiotic way PB starts their games. Making the first hours tedious and annyoing.
Which is a shame because that's where you make an impression with your game. Hence Witcher 3s Sex scene....
I love the way your eyes have to get used to the light when you go inside and outside
I haven't expected Jon playing a Piranha Bytes game . Althrought I don't really like Elex, I have hopes for some Gothic. There probably won't be but well, man can dream.
Gothic is essentially the same formula, just a bit less interesting setting. So why would he? Fantasy medieval RPG.... how unique.
Gothic 1 has good, memorable characters, world that isn't big but there is actually a plot reason to that, quite enjoyable plot and good(in my opinion) fighting system. Elex isn't even close to Gothic in my books, it just very badly want's to be it, and it fails at doing so.
I don't agree. The combat system is just as shit in Gothic as it is in Elex, and the Gothic characters were as one-dimensional as they get. True, Diego, Lester, Gorn and Milten appeared in all three games --- but there was nothing interesting about them at all. They were archetypes with a few lines of dialogue each, at best.
The combat system in Gothic is the best. I don't know of any other game that had actually challenging combat where you had to read the enemies and time your attacks properly.
If you say so.
Captain Jack Harkness-Jetpack
"Are you a companion a shop or a love interest?" All of them at once!
Love Pyranha Bytes and their take on RPGs. Absolutely adore them. Wish people took the time to appretiate that this isn't a huge AAA title.
Talks about how a hatchet would be loads better but he completely ignored the one by the druggies bodies XD oh jon
Skyrim and Fallout 4 had a beautiful baby boy, and you met future Benor right off the bat!
There is a very interesting form of integration of story and gameplay in the coldness mechanic. Check this out: choosing pragmatic things to say, as opposed to emotional/empathetic things(it matters less if they are evil or good), can give you or restrict your access to different choices down the line. You can consume certain items to give you stats and skills, but it kills your emotions as you become more of an ubermensch. And this important in the story.
Just finished Elex tonight. It was fun. Played as a Cleric and had a blast. Good Gaming and have fun.
if you ever play Gothic series games & Risen series, this is Elex all about, an open world role-playing hardcore games!
Gunslinger SyayoRPG/CRPG what is a hardcore game?
"save me, rumu!"
Fantastic game from the makers of Gothic
Protips for new players: 1.) Whatever you do, do not sell natural Elex! which leads to 2.) Once you've learned the 'Chemistry' skill (essential skill regardless of faction or playstyle) if you have the proper ingredients/materials, you can make potions and Elex drinks that come in 3 sizes - small (100 XP boost, these are a WASTE, do not use them), regular (2 attribute points - helps more than you know) and strong Elex drinks (1 skill point). 3.) Consuming Elex drinks raises your 'Cold rating', certain dialogue choices can either decrease or increase your 'Cold rating' depending on what you choose. Your Cold rating does have an effect on the game, so keep that in mind. Cont -->
4.) Combat can be tough, especially starting out, a small learning curve combined with the games tough difficulty even for DS/BB/The Surge fans can lead to frustration. Many A True Nerd looks to be playing on 'Normal' if I were to guess, with 'Difficult' and 'Ultra' difficulty settings above that, to give you an idea. Any creature in this game can wreck you if you're not careful.
However, you can customize the difficulty once you're in game (think Dishonored 2 yet with less options) the combat is rhythm and stamina based, the more consecutive hits you land as the meter advances will increase your dmg. output. Getting a companion ASAP is advisable, not only are their quests well done + helps combat tremendously even if only because the enemy A.I. has something else to attack other than you.
Last but not least, I just wanted to say, if you consider yourself a RPG fan, give this game a chance! It has some great exploration, level & world design, decent humor, solid if somewhat inconsistent voice acting and dialogues, excellent choice & consequence (Think Fallout: New Vegas), good quests and story. It's rough around the edges, a flawed gem. A sequel is already in the works.
Maybe as a german I'm conditioned to like this 'Euro-jank' stuff, but I do. This is a thinking mans game I dare say, so in theory it should be right up your alley. Every decision must be weight carefully, because it will lock you out other possibilities and has consequences. You need to listen to what people are really saying, balance different factions and intersecting quests to your advantage and shit. And while this is a very flawed gem, it does a lot of things that I enjoy.
Jon? Thinking? One of us is confused about whose channel they've been watching. ;)
He wasted all his attribute points on nothing really and ran off to the desert without equipment or help, he clearly didn't think that one through I suppose :) Not really his fault though and he did understand one thing towards the end, playing this game well is quite the time commitment.
I wish Piranha Bytes would remaster Gothic 1-3
As far as I know they don´t own it.
3? 3 was shit! It had no story. You were farming faction points in dead boring quests to enter the next area....
Even ignoring the bug apocalypse, it was just bad....
Idk, I enjoyed Gothic 3.
It was the worst simple quest faction farming i've ever seen outside MMOs. And the "story" was litearlly: "Find Xardas.".
elex.. yes... so tips for survival
1) dont combat... at all, anything but the weak totorial runts WILL kill you untill your like level 15ish or so at a minimum... running is your friend
2) prioritise intellligence, there are some important skills you want to rush
3) get a companion asap
4) clerics are best faction, because of the guns and technology and psionic powers
5) joining ANY faction lets you get their abilities, but locks you out of the others, still helpful to pick one asap
You cannot pick up/interact when your weapon is equipped, small annoyance. That starting area/relay station (make sure to use the jetpack to explore the very top, near the sat. dish) a lot of items, and 2 in particular that will really help in the early game.
Jon, I have arthritis in both knees and both ankles and I can jump higher than that.
Dude, you have to vacuum up every item, plant, and weapon you find. If you can't use it, sell it. Or later you can craft potions and improve your weapons.
"I'm going to let this guy protect me."
I'm glad we finally got to see where Benor went
I do like this game. Massive massive grind but I love a good lore heavy game.
Some combat tips: You can only parry attacks from humans not from animals, so you need to avoid them. And it's a good idea to use the jetpack for avoiding because it doesn't use stamina. If you hover away you can wait for your stamina to return to attack again. And try to learn the animation patterns of the enemies. This is a bit of a flaw of the game. The enemy KI is pretty dumb and you can easily spot what they are gonna do next. It's like the animation and KI of some animals was directly copied from Gothic II. The bird you fought, in the beginning, moves almost exactly like a Scavenger in Gothic II.
This was a fun game. Like any PB game it was pretty buggy, and also like any PB game it had GREAT exploration. Like, better than Bethesda's even. The world is pretty vertical, there's a ton of interesting paths and nooks and crannies and locations to discover. There's a number of ways to solve most quests, so that's cool.
Make this into a series!
Within the first 3 minutes no perception jon passes the bow😂😂😂
Level up for John's perception. The guy can betray you
Oh my god yes! I love this game. Have I look at their previous games(Gothic series, Risen series) if you liked this. Piranha Bytes game can be really rough and buggy at times, but also really rewarding.
So you're the hidden dev employee lurking in the comments section for the this game, are you?
Dan Geer No just a fan boy playing their games since Gothic I. I know their games have flaws and are not for everyone. But I still really like them. Maybe it’s just nostalgia because gameplay wise they didn‘t change that much.
Marcel Pursche I think you meant to say "and are not for everyone"
legion999 Haha you're right. A game that is not for anyone would be pretty bad :D
I wanna see a lets play of this, please.
Jon missed a hatchet by the outlaws while talking about drugs.
Something tells me it is connected.
Thanx Jon. I know you probably won't ever read this, but really thankyou for this review. I eventually could afford this game and it is amazingly complex as you said. Its so in depth and convoluted, and the combat gets better as you improve your skills (Just like real life). Its really a diamond in the rough with almost every choice having consequences and is a true and proper RPG. Plus the Plasma weapons are AMAZING !!! :)
I saw it on steam sale and had to see if John did a video before I bought it. This channel is a great before you buy
loved risen 1, elex sort of reminds me of it . I have clocked like 50 hours and i'm loving it
TheUnsuper It‘s from the same developers as Risen and Gothic. They basically make the same RPG since Gothic I.
Risen 1 and Gothic 1 and 2 are hugely overrated. I've played every PB game. And yes, they kind of have been making the same RPG, since Gothic 1... but I can't help but like them.
“Cold” doesn’t actually refer to temperature, it essentially refers to emotional dead-ness
You appear unfamiliar with the Cassowary. It's Australia's smaller and more evil Ostrich.
I'd like to see Jon play Alpha Protocol. It's not open world, but your choices certainly affect it, to the point where just sticking around for a news broadcast in the locker room can give you bonuses. You also get bonuses for either being a dick to everyone, or for sucking up to them. Even if it is a bit janky, it feels like a labor of love so I'm sure he'd love it.
Middle age + magic + future tech = ELEX
every weapon has different combo move, & the RPG in this is great
Elex and elexit are the same thing, elexit is just shards of elex
umm Jon do we need to talk about your eye sight
That would be an impressive jump for an egg carton. It's about twice your height
your companion IS immortal, they get KOed, but if you can finish the fight they get back up.
PC jumps about as well as every other shooter person, including Nathan Drake (so long as he's doing a standing jump)
This reminds me of Gothic so much, aaahhh my childhood
Incidentally...
You should totally play the Gothic series
So the stamina takes so long to come back you literally have to run away for a second in the middle of combat to be able to attack again? Great idea!
That voice acting tho
full series
Keep it up man, your videos are great
Starts video talking about how being an alb means your amazing, laughs as I know basically everyone hates albs
I pretty much only enjoyed this game because of the Gothic nostalgia. And like gothic, the fun all happens at the end when you suddenly turn into a combat god
Jon's really swinging some pipe
You should do a video on Metro 2033 Jon
Am I the only one to notice that there is a bow in the first closet right after he killed the first rat? Like that's a bow right? Am I crazy?
Oh my god this game. It tries to screw you over whenever it can.
Get Jon to play Gothic 1! Also I would live this to be a series
Kinda good you picked the game up after a few patches. Especially the combat system needed a bit of work. It was worse on release. Also bows were a good idea. And companions are much less useless now.
good video Jon
make this a full playthrough.. please! i really like the game and put 80 hours in it:)
btw outlaws 4 life xD
Nah, man. Clerics for life.
Matthew Vice clerics are cool too☺
They sure are. They remind me of the Brotherhood of Steel, which is why I joined them - on my first playthrough, no less, staggering all the way across the map with no idea where to find them. I eventually did and the experience was great.
In my next playthrough I'll probably do the Outlaws.
The Berserkers don't really interest me. I don't like any of them.
Gotta say, the game looks pretty fun, but looking through the comments it's just person after person saying it's terrible without actually giving a reason for why it's terrible...
They probably only played five minutes (or not at all) and didn't realize the reason your character sucks at fighting is because, well, your character sucks at fighting. Why wouldn't he? You gotta level up your fighting skills, this is a Piranha Bytes game after all. I love their games, it's so rewarding when you're a basically superhuman at the end and you can whack the shit out of every character that annoyed you throughout.
I feel like half the viewers of Jon's videos just watch so they can yell at him when he fails perception checks over and over.
oh man this game is awesome & underrated far by most people! I assure you this game you will enjoy it a lot, the combat might a bit clunky but manageable & the best is there is a lot of quest, side quest & unique quest to be discover!!
I stopped playing at the end game for a moment, before you get into Albs base, just want to make I'm prepare to explore the world of Edan, its huge & the scenery is viewtiful!!
no.
just no
If it wasn't for the terrible pacing, combat, movement, main character, and level design, I might have agreed with you.
Jon you were killed by what looked like a deformed do-do bird this game must be some what difficult
But hey you did kill it afterwards lol
This game is really harsh at the beginning. Sometimes you get quests you can't possibly complete with your level or equipment. Even the most basic creatures can kill you if you are not careful. So it's often come back later, sneak to avoid combats or run as fast as you can^^ And sometimes you can lure tough enemies to NPCs that kill them for you. It's a bit cheaty I know but some enemies kill you with a single hit.
Seems like a long range builds a good idea if there is one
shloobin shleeb There is. And especially in the late game it is totally OP. Some guns and bows have a stun effect so you can keep enemies in stun lock. Sadly, the same can happen to you. But it’s still a steep learning curve at the start.
sounds like a good game would buy it but im broke
More plz
That description sounds a lot like Horizon Zero Dawn without the giant robots.
You should play risen Jon ! It's by the same dev I believe
This game looks like it might be fun, but the MC's voice is too aggressively 'cool' for me to sit through a whole game
I can tell from the rushed play and aggressive forward editing that Jon likes this game enough to want to show it off, but is ultimately only teasing it. And us. 😱
Make more elex content plz.
This game smells like a piranha bytes
It is.
But I liked! Hardcore new series, maybe, Jon?
Jon you should consider playing tecnomancer. I enjoyed it.
Played this a while and ended up returning it. Base concept and a couple executions were cool, but the game itself is a story and mechanical nightmare in controls, health, combat, characters, etc. Felt like a worse Gothic game, and that's mainly compared to Gothic 4. Worth a look only if you can get it for 5-10$ and it already looks cool. You probably already know if this game is for you though, just from seeing the gameplay.
I would have liked this game a lot more if it had been easier. I set the difficulty as low as it could go and the combat was still so clunky as to not be fun.
Cool
the second i clicked on this video's and scrolled to the gameplay I guessed it's another Gothic game. Yup. Same developers.
Please make this a series
You should really try divinity original sin 2
Only I hear "good afternoon Lazy gentlemen." ))))
Medieval.... Does that mean catapults?!
No only balistas
United Nations stop it
also play this on PC is good!
series of this please?
you might want to try gothic 2 form these guys its good
Its seems like a cool game. Don't gonna win any GOTY award, but seems fun.
Should i get it for Xbox One? In a sale perhaps?
Jon seems to have problems with games requiring stamina bar management. To be fair, I do too, and I'm not really a fan of the stamina system in most of these types of games.
i bought this game day one and tried my absolute best to like it, but it sucks ass just complete ass. i played for over ten hours and i only managed to kill the most basic enemies every thing else two shot killed me or worse. i was even playing on easy it was just not fun having to run from everything all the time.
hopecanon you're just shit
It has a very steep difficulty curve at first, but it can be overcome, you just have to be careful, or get a companion, they are immortal and will make it a lot easier.
Do more pls
In the first 30 seconds you convinced me to buy this game
How?!
I would hope you watched the video and looked at some reviews first, this game is reeeally clunky and sounds way better than it actually is.
Interesting. I had to stop watching in the first 30 seconds because of how generic the character looks. Plus it looks like a bloody iPhone game.
Probably because you're not very good with your money.
because you probably have a lot of money to blow off
I was joking
I already have the game and enjoyed it
plz play more
playthrough pls
Can this be a new series please?
This is a great game
Hi everyone
So is this worth getting ?
PIRANHA BYTES FTW Play Gothic 1+2 its awesome (but buggy at times)
