mdhookey glad you liked. Had I known I would be making this available to everybody 20 years later, I probably would have filmed the same but some of the things I said I might be better.
Manfred, thanks’ a lot for this great movie. Your commentary is also great, very funny. I live in Białystok. It’s amazing, how our city and region changed in last 20 years. Manfred, if you have friends, who think socialism is great, show them this movie.
In 1991 I was 12 years old. I've lived in Bialystok on Kard. St. Wyszynskiego Street, very close to our famous market. Me and my 14 years old friend were visiting this market every weekend just for fun. We didn't have cash to spend but walking beetwen all those people and looking at goods from behind the "Russian" border was making my day. Thanks for sharing.
glad you liked ...ah yes the old Zloty notes. I remember first time in 1990 I went from West Berlin to Poland and changed some money, for DM 50 I got 454,000 Zloty; a few months later it was 700,000 and you had all these bills with all kinds of zeros on them. But to be fair I experienced even worse inflation and large notes in Turkey
@lynkz17 .Of course 20 years ago camcorders were much larger and of poorer quality, but I think most of your country folks will agree cities, towns and villages were much more drab than today. I was in no way trying to suggest that this is what eastern Poland looks like today, which is why I always put the date my recordings were taken to show they are time documents. Hope you still enjoyed looking at them.
Sorry if I left the impression that I only filmed negative. That was not my intention at all. I had no guide book or anything and only filmed what I saw.
I'm VERY glad you didnt follow any guides and went on your own. You filmed our raw, daily reality and that's the real beauty of it. This is really nostalgic.
back then, prices in both Czeckoslovakia and Poland were "ridiculously" low. encouraging me to travel (train fares, hotel rooms and food, all a small part of what would be paid in Western Europe). But for both countries, I, as a Canadian needed a visa. For Poland a one time visit visa was about DM 70.-, whereas for Czeckoslovakia a 3 month unlimited entry visa cost about the same, so I went to Czeckoslovakia many more times than Poland.
nothing more than that it is not so cheap as it used to be in early 90s. We got European common market and prices are very much comparable to this in Berlin or London...
I honestly doubt about coke prices You remember. At warsaw uni there was a vending machine, with coke for 1.50 pln, wchich I remember only because it seemed so cheap to me then (ca 2004-5).
@19Dako20 I think, it's just an old camera low saturation of colors makes that a little depressing effect. The users mef444, maciek9207, tomekwrz1991 have nowadays recordings of polish cities to compare to.
Well, You may believe what You want, but the coke prices You gave are not real. I live in that city (warsaw) and drink a lot of coke, and I take a lot of attention to prices. We nearly have no inflation for last 10 years and it is impossible to find a coke can for less than 2 pln (ca 50 euro cent).. But going away from coke - I don't know about the prices in Your place, but here we pay 6 pln (2$) for a liter of gas. It makes 7.5$ per gallon. still believe it is cheaper here?
so glad to have a blast from the past, you would never recognize Suwalki, if you visited it now. i have to say my hometown underwent a huge transition. have a look at ruclips.net/video/SJ44v7ilWFQ/видео.html greetings!
Great video. Today, Poland is almost unrecognizable from this video, especially Warsaw. What a great historical document!
mdhookey glad you liked. Had I known I would be making this available to everybody 20 years later, I probably would have filmed the same but some of the things I said I might be better.
Well, you can never know what people will think 25 years later :) Regardless, it's great to see this and to hear your comments also.

Great movie. Like time machine. I was nine years old, but still remeber those times. If you have got more please put it on youtube
Stare czasy a tu już 2020rok 😍 polska wygląda teraz 1000zary lepiej niż wtedy

i would imagine that much would have changed both because of time and because of political change. Hope you enjoyed a snapshot of your recent past.

thank you for the link - it was nice to see an area I experienced as bleak and listless to now be so lively and colorful
It was 10 years before I was born but it looks like something from another world and at the same time like my city nowadays
o my God! my born city looked so depressing! I wish to say thanks for your job one more time
!
Great video, thanks for sharing :) I've got a question - how did you come up with an idea of visiting Poland? I'd be afraid :P
Sorry if I left the impression that I only filmed negative. That was not my intention at all. I had no guide book or anything and only filmed what I saw.

You should really visit Poland today. Its so modern!

wow thanks for sharing that, unfortunately I don't remember those times well, because I was 1 year old

Glad you enjoyed.
