Atlanta-based novelist and playwright Pearl Cleage joins writer Alice Walker for a conversation that focuses on their creative influences, the writers they read, and how they've been inspired by each other's work. Alice Walker is my heroine! She inspired me so much. If it wasn't for reading The Color Purple I wouldn't have the drive I have today. It was such a coincidence that she read the letter that would be the start of my own novel. I never known who the late, great Bessie Smith was and now the woman is one of my favorite historical figures.
